Ellen's 10-Year Wedding Anniversary: When Life Dramatically Changed
Ellen DeGeneres is one of the biggest names in entertainment and one of the biggest advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. Her wife, Portia de Rossi, is an actress, model, and philanthropist, originally from Australia. They met in 2004 and now they’re celebrating 10 years of nuptial bliss. We have the details of their relationship thanks to Pop Sugar.
How they met
Back in 2004, when Paris Hilton was the 'it girl,' Jessica Simpson was still married to Nick Lachey and Flavor Flav had one of the biggest reality shows ever, something way more important was about to happen. Ellen met Portia De Rossi on December 1st, 2004, at the Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium.
Their lives changed completely as they have been together since then. However, their relationship was a transformation for De Rossi, who finally learned to embrace her true self. She started dating women after her marriage to Mel Metcalfe ended in 1999.
Embracing their truth
According to E! News, Portia had gotten married for the American green card but soon realized that it was selfish to continue in that relationship. She was actually in a relationship with film director Francesca Gregorini when she met Ellen. However, the actress wasn’t open about being a lesbian until she started dating the talk show host.
There were many pictures with Gregorini but she would adamantly avoid answering questions about her preferences in interviews. She kept her private life completely out of the spotlight. In 2005, Portia told The Advocate, ‘Believe me, I had a very, very long and difficult struggle with my sexuality.’
‘I was thinking, "Well, the people who need to know I'm gay know, and I'm somehow living by example by continuing on with my career and having a full, rich life, and I am incidentally gay, but it's not a big political platform." I justified it in so many ways.’
Meanwhile, DeGeneres' coming out experience was very public and it happened on April 14, 1997, with the cover of Time Magazine and an episode of her sitcom. It happened more than 20 years ago when people did not embrace these things as we do today.
Portia once said, ‘She was so courageous and so loud in '97, and now she is doing something that is more subliminal. She's changing the world, she really is, and it's exciting to be a part of that. It's hard living a life that's somewhat public, and hard when you put that life together with someone who is so famous and so loved and admired. It's also really exciting.’
They started living together in 2005 in a tiny house in Los Angeles with three rescue cats. It was reported that Gregorini was heartbroken after Portia broke up with her. Meanwhile, Ellen and Portia decided to buy a huge ranch so that the actress could have horses.
In November 2005, Ellen told People, ‘It's the first time that I've known in every cell of my being that I'm with somebody for the rest of my life.’ She had been dating Alexandra Hedison, a photographer, before meeting De Rossi.
Moreover, the talk show host firmly believes that ‘We were just supposed to be together. It was a tough decision. I was physically getting sick because I was trying not to say anything. So I told Alex and she told Francesca. It was really hard to uproot everything.’
DeGeneres is 15 years older than De Rossi, but the age difference wasn’t significant as they agreed on most aspects of their life together. They are not actively looking to have kids, but they focus on saving pets as they are both animal lovers. De Rossi decided to adopt a vegan lifestyle in 2007.
Meanwhile, Ellen is still pretty busy with her show which still remains one of the best on daytime television. ‘It's the hardest job I've ever had, but it's the most satisfaction I've ever had, so I'm sure it's like being a mother. It challenges you every day.’
On May 15, 2008, the talk show host announced that Portia and she were getting married after the California Supreme Court banned the law that prohibited gay marriage. The couple walked down the aisle on August 16, 2008, at their home in Beverly Hills, wearing designs by Zac Posen.
Despite their obvious happiness, they have been the subject of many splitting-up rumors. Every time one of them attends a show alone, or someone is caught not wearing their wedding ring, new rumors pop up. Ellen even joked about it on her show once.
However, in 2014, the talk show host got tired of the senseless stories and decided to speak seriously to People. ‘The truth is, and this is corny, I fall more in love with Portia all the time. I really do. She surprises me all the time. It's what anyone experiences when you find that person that gets you, wants to take care of you, wants the best for you. We're really lucky because we know how rare it is.’
Still going strong
Rumors surfaced almost every year but the couple is going strong. They still love each other immensely and work hard to maintain a committed relationship. ‘Our priorities are each other too. If we had kids, then I'm sure they would be, but we are. And that's important.’
They celebrated their 9th wedding anniversary last year, and Ellen posted a picture on her Instagram with the caption, ‘Being her wife is the greatest thing that I am.’ Obviously, everyone who is a fan of this couple can rest easy because they’re solid.
Despite their blissful love, the couple had to evacuate their home in Montecito, California due to the wildfires that spread in the area. The Thomas fires had been cataloged as one of the biggest wildfires in history.
It left 20 people dead in the Montecito area. They tried going back to their home but had to evacuate a second time. Later on, the couple shared their gratefulness to the firefighters and first responders who helped during this tragic disaster.
Ten years together
Ellen, 60, and Portia, 45, celebrated their special anniversary on their social media accounts this past Thursday. ‘Ten years ago today. This was such a special day for us.’ They also shared the speech made by Wayne Dyer, who officiated at their wedding. De Rossi wrote, ‘To remind us all how far we’ve come — that we are living in a country that supports #marraigeequality.’
Back in 2016, the talk show host told People, ‘I’ve gotten to a place where I really am just settled. Really. I know that I’m not going anywhere. She’s not going anywhere. I’m not saying the relationship took a while; I’m saying in my life, it took a while to find this.’
Knowing more about their relationship is an inspiration. Their story makes us hope that real love is out there and that anyone can fight for what’s right. They’re not just a couple, they changed the world together with love. Check out this montage shared on The Ellen Show in celebration of this momentous occasion.
