Love Triangle On 'Grey's Anatomy'? Be Ready For A Twist
The medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes is about to start its 15th season with no sign of an end in the near future. The show has a massive following, and Ellen Pompeo is currently the highest-earning television actress in history. The plotline gets more interesting with each episode, and the 14th season ended with a serious cliffhanger.
We saw a bunch of things happen to our favorite doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital the past year, and sadly, we had to say goodbye to April Kepner and Arizona Robbins because the actresses decided to leave the show. However, things are only getting more interesting.
The season finale showed the return of Teddy Altman, the former chief of cardiothoracic surgery, and by the end of the episode, it was revealed that she was pregnant. Mid-season, after divorcing his wife Amelia, Owen realized he wanted to be with Altman all along and went to Germany to find her.
After a passionate reunion, they had a huge fight, and Owen returned to the United States without her. The chief of trauma at Grey Sloan decided that he wanted to foster a child and was given a baby, which prompted a kind of reconciliation with his former wife, and the pieces have been lain to have two women fighting for Owen’s love.
New love triangle
This is not the first time the doctors have been involved in a love triangle, as the show presented the character of Teddy when Owen was in love with Christina Yang, who became Altman’s protégée. This resulted in a major plot for the show, but Owen ultimately chose Christina.
Christina, played by Sandra Oh, left the show in season 10, and they brought in former ‘Private Practice’ character, Amelia Shepherd, the sister of Derek Shepherd and a neurosurgeon as well. Fans are looking forward to seeing how this new love triangle develops as the show has really changed the way they present women.
Back as a regular
Kim Raver, who plays Teddy, is back as a series regular. She talked to The Hollywood Reporter and said, ‘We're in 2018 and I pitched, if we can, not having woman pitted against woman. Amelia and Teddy definitely have what they want, but maybe there's a different way for us to approach it.’
‘And the writers seem very interested in that and we're hopefully going to head in that direction... I can't talk about it, but it's a device in the storyline to make the love triangle different than we've seen it in the past.’
A new angle
We can’t wait to see how the show handles a love triangle in a new way. Originally, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ showed the struggle of a group of residents while they learned how to be real doctors, but now most of the characters have thriving careers, so the only thing that's left is to work on their love lives.
Owen has grown since his beginning in the show, and he’ll be a great father to Teddy’s child. Amelia is currently mentoring Owen’s foster child’s mother, who’s a drug addict, and Teddy’s going to step in as Chief of Surgery while Miranda Bailey takes a break.
Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen, talked to the Hollywood Reporter as well. ‘What they want to do [now] is show people who have histories and have feelings — all three of these people have a lot [of] baggage and history with each other. And there are children involved, which is a responsibility.’
The new season is set to premiere in September, and it was recently announced that the first episode would be two hours long. According to McKidd, it takes a while for Teddy to tell him that she’s pregnant, as their huge fight in Germany had been all about Amelia.
It’s shaping up to be a great season as Alex recently got married, and Meredith is advancing her career even more. We’re looking forward to seeing where Jackson and Maggie end up, and even what happens with the new Katherine Fox Foundation, which replaced the Harper Avery Foundation after the sexual harassment debacle. September needs to hurry up!
