'AGT' star Courtney Hadwin, 14, stuns judges with jaw-dropping Tina Turner performance
America's Got Talent participants don't stop surprising us with their stunning abilities, but a girl from England recently performed on the famous stage and left the audience completely open-mouthed. Luckily, we have all the details of Courtney Hadwin in the following article. Check them out!
Who is this girl?
Courtney Hadwin is a 14-year-old originally from County Durham, England. She made herself quite a name on the talent show competition since the very moment she had her audition back in February when season 13 started. But this wasn't her first time on a similar stage.
The singer made an appearance last year in June on The Voice Kids which is a British television singing competition created by John de Mol. Hadwin made it to the top 6, but could not win the contest. She even had a small part as a young Cosette in Les Miserables in her homeland.
Some AGT fans were a little bit upset for these previous experiences since it gave the girl a little bit of advantage over the rest of the participants. Moreover, the young girl was backlashed when AGT followers found out that the program had not disclosed her previous music credits.
However, it is entirely valid considering the rules of the show. According to the singer's grandfather, Tom Storey, during an interview with Daily Mail, Courtney went for America's Got Talent instead of the British version of the show because they felt that the UK didn't get her, but believed that the American franchise would do better.
So despite the comments, Courtney was sure that she deserved the opportunity to be on the AGT stage and embark herself along with her dad to live the American dream. Her style is inspired by singers such as Janis Joplin, Etta James, Tina Turner, and James Brown because of their individuality and their stage presence.
Her way to America
Before turning up for her audition to impress judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel, Courtney took some time to go to Los Angeles and visit a few of the most iconic venues where her idols once performed. She even stopped by Michael Jackson's star on the Walk of Fame.
According to a video package, she stated, 'I’ve dreamed since I was really little of coming to America. When I was 11, I saw a James Brown video, and it changed everything.' However, she clarified that even though her favorite singers are inspiring, she does not want to be like them, but to be herself.
When everybody saw her for the first time in the show, Hadwin seemed to be a shy and nervous first timer with no experience. She decided to sing Otis Redding’s 'Hard to Handle,' and as soon as she opened her mouth, she shocked the judges and the public with a rock 'n roll attitude and a powerful voice.
Thanks to her remarkable presentation, she was worthy of the iconic golden buzzer, which is given solely to unique and breathtaking performances, and she received it from Howie Mandel. This buzzer shot her directly to the live show in her quest to win the 1-million-dollar prize.
Before winning the buzzer, Mandel told her she was not from this planet and that she was the new Janis Joplin. With that being said, it is safe to affirm that America definitely got Courtney, and she quickly became one of the favorite ones in the show.
The two-part finale
During the finale some days ago, the 14-year-old took the stage by storm with an energetic and lively performance of a Tina Turner classic. She sang her own rendition on the star’s 1988 song 'River Deep – Mountain High.'
She had previously sung renditions of the 1969 hit Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf, and Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag by James Brown. It was clear that she would give her heart and soul since she once said that because it was the finale, so she would not hold back.
'I hope people go to the Dolby Theatre one day and say, ‘That’s where Courtney Hadwin performed.' And she certainly gave it all on the stage. The presentation was spectacular not only because of her vocal abilities but also for the stage presence and the spectacle itself.
She showed off her self-taught moves and even got close to the judges at one point. Clearly, she was poured with praises and applauds by the jury and the audience. Howie Mandel was so pleased with her that he said that she was on fire, and he loved everything about her.
He also indicated that they were watching a superstar in the making right there on AGT. On the other side, Mel B described the young singer as free as a bird but wild and crazy. The former singer even added that she thought that Courtney's legs were going to snap.
Simon Cowell told the girl that 'being a star is being remembered, and that’s what you do. You’re going to inspire people and tell them what rock n’ roll is all about it.' With that show, Courtney proved that she had all it took to win season 13, but America would have the last call.
On September 19 at 8:00 pm, America decided that magician Shin Lim deserved to win the season. Acrobatic group Zurcaroh and violinist Brian King Joseph got the second and third place respectively. To complete the top 5, we have comedian Samuel J. Comroe and singer Michael Ketterer.
Courtney came in the sixth place, but it was not her end. According to Daily Mail, Simon Cowell, the 58-year-old music pundit, signed Hadwin to his Syco record label. They are soon discussing a big money deal after she lost the top prize in America's Got Talent against magician Shin Lim.
Although she did not win, Courtney Hadwin's future seems to be very bright and promising. We are sure she is a rising star that will soon shock us with more fantastic performances as a well-established singer, don't you think? If you liked her, share this story with your friends!
