Friends' Cast: Where Are They Now?

One of the greatest sitcoms in the world, Friends, premiered its first episode 24 years ago. If that doesn’t make you feel old, then nothing will. We remember our beloved six protagonists and their crazy lives every day, and we are always hoping for a revival. In the meantime, let’s take a look at where the actors are now. What it their life like more than two decades later?

Jennifer Aniston

Unlike most artists who leave their first big-paying jobs, this actress has only risen in stardom since the end of Friends. She is now recognized as one of the most famous movie stars in the world, after landing a big role in 2003’s Bruce Almighty alongside Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman. Her other notable works are The Breakup, Marley & Me, Horrible Bosses, and We’re the Millers.

The difference in genres has been to display her wide range of acting skills as well as open her career to million-dollar contracts and the coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. She has been named “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World”, but the best thing about it is that Aniston does not seem to let all those accolades get to her head.

Unfortunately, a successful professional life does not equal an excellent personal affairs Ten years ago, Jennifer and Brad Pitt got separated, which is more time than their actual marriage. Sadly, the actress is still hounded by tabloids who are always interested in her personal life after the famous heartthrob broke their relationship.

However, now all they are talking about is the possibility of a reunion with her latest ex-husband, Justin Theroux; their marriage lasted only two years. The gossip was running rampant, saying that their separation was due to Aniston not being able to have kids. The actress was interviewed by InStyle where she wished that the media would stop using her pictures and stating, “Finally Pregnant”.

“They don’t know what I’ve been through medically or emotional. There is a pressure on women to be mothers, and if they are not, they’re deemed damaged goods. Maybe my purpose on this planet isn’t to procreate. Maybe I have other things I’m supposed to do?”

Men might not have treated Jennifer great, but luckily, she has the support of one of her closest friends in the world, Courteney Cox. They met on the set of the sitcom and have always found time for each other despite their busy lives. Aniston is even godmother to Cox’ daughter, Coco. Did you know that Courteney auditioned for the role of Rachel and Jennifer for the part of Monica?

Courteney Cox

After the end of Friends, the producer, Marc Cherry, wanted this actress to play the role of Susan Mayer in Desperate Housewives, but Cox was heavily pregnant at the time and simply could not commit to the part. But this does not mean that her career went downhill. In fact, she appeared in films like November, Zoom, and The Longest Yard.

In television, the actress appeared in a couple of episode of Scrubs before landing the lead in 2009’s Cougar Town on ABC, which ran for six seasons. Sadly, Courteney divorced her husband of ten years, David Arquette, but she bounced back with Snow Patrol member, Johnny McDaid in 2013. They revealed their engagement a year later.

However, it seems like the couple will not be walking down the aisle anytime soon because Cox is afraid their relationship will go south after Aniston’s most recent marriage failure. 12 years her junior, McDaid has always expressed a deep love for the actress. On another note, Courteney gets asked all the time about a possible reunion of Friends.

“They are rebooting everything, but I don’t know how does that work with Friends, though? That was people in their, you know, 20s, 30s. The show isn’t about people in their 40s or 50s. And we have the same problems than that’s just sad. That’s not fun.”

Lisa Kudrow

Friends fans know that Lisa was the oldest out the six actors on the show. She started filming at the age of 31 and recently turned 55. Her part as the eclectic Phoebe Buffay, a massage therapist and guitar player, earned the actress a Primetime Emmy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Golden Globe nomination.

The newer generation might remember Lisa from a 2015 performance of “Smelly Cat” at a Taylor Swift concert in Los Angeles, by request of the young singer herself. It seems like the actress has a lot more luck in love than the other two female friends, as she has been married to Michael Stern, a French advertising businessman, for over 20 years.

Their son, Julian Marie Stern, was born in 1998 and you might remember Kudrow’s pregnancy as it became part of the show during seasons four and five when Phoebe became a surrogate for her brother and delivered triplets. After the end of Friends, the actress became a producer, writer and female lead for HBO’s The Comeback in 2005. The show aired its second in 2014.

She is also the executive producer of TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are, and fortunately, Lisa has also maintained a close bond with Aniston and Courteney. She even landed a small role in Cox’s Cougar Town. The actress has also been dabbling in movies like P.S. I Love You and The Girl on the Train, and she even voiced Miss Templeton in the 2017 animated film, Boss Baby.

Kudrow has also been asked about a possible Friends reunion, to which she answered, “I don’t see it happening. What would it be about? The thing we liked about the show is that it was like 20-somethings and they were their own family, and now they all have families. So what are we going to watch?” We’re sad to see this response, but it’s very accurate.

Matt LeBlanc

Unfortunately, after the success of Friends where all the actors earned $1 million per episode, Matt’s life went downhill. The spin-off series called Joey where the character goes off to Los Angeles to pursue acting failed in 2006, and his daughter, Marina, was given the sad diagnosis of cortical dysplasia, a disease that affects the bones, the brain, and motor skills.

Furthermore, he was followed by rumors of affairs, which lead to a divorce from his wife, Melissa McKnight. After all that, Matt took the drastic measure of stepping away from the spotlight for a while. “For years and years, I barely left the house. I was burnt out. I wanted to not have a schedule, not be somewhere. I was in a position to do that. It was a very dark time. I almost had a nervous breakdown.”

Fortunately for LeBlanc fans, the actor made a comeback in 2011, as himself in the show Episodes, and he has even won a Golden Globe. He later appeared in season 8 of Top Gear, and in 2016, they announced Matt as a new presenter, which he is still doing today, though he is also working on CBS’ Man with a Plan as Adam Burns.

Moreover, his daughter has recovered from her problems, but that does not mean that her dad is not worried about her all the time. “I remember when my daughter Marina was born. The second I laid eyes on her I was in love, and I had never felt that way before. I couldn't believe it. I knew from that moment there was nothing that would ever stop me from loving her – even if she crashed my Ferrari.”

Matthew Perry

Chandler Bing was always the “funny” member of Friends, or at least, that’s what he would tell you. His relationship with Monica was one of the major plotlines of the show, but most fans know that his real life was very dark. The actor went through a horrible period during his time on the sitcom, dealing with an alcohol and drug problem.

It all started after an injury in 1997 where he broke his arm and was prescribed Vicodin. As with most addicts, Perry could not stop taking them after his wound healed. The actor talked to People magazine after, revealing that the pills made him feel better than ever. Matthew was admitted into rehab facilities several times during that period.

“Getting sober is a really hard thing to do. You can’t have a drug problem for 30 years and then expect to have it be solved in 28 days,” the actor revealed to The Hollywood Reporter. Perry vowed to himself not to drink on set, but in the 2000s, it was common for him to be detoxing behind-the-scenes, and sometimes he filmed with severe hangovers.

The whole experience of Friends is actually a blur for the actor. In a BBC interview, Matthew said, “I don’t remember three years of it. So none of those…somewhere between season three and six.” Therefore, not that the actor has his addiction mostly under control, he has been trying to help those in need because he knows how hard it can be.

In 2013, Matthew turned his former house into “Perry’s House for Men”, a 12-step program to help other men in their quest for sobriety. At one point, the actor also donated his four-bedroom house in Malibu to the program. Sadly, in 2015, they had to close down the center due to financial trouble, but he has been working hard to open it again. He also talked about a revival of Friends.

“When I'm asleep I have this nightmare that we do friends again and nobody cares. We do a whole series, we come back, and nobody cares about it so if anybody asks me, I'm gonna say no. The thing is: we ended on such a high. We can't beat it. Why would we go and do it again?”

David Schwimmer

The actor has had several projects since the end of Friends, like voicing the character of Melman in the animated movie, Madagascar, Big Nothing, and Nothing but the Truth. In 2007, he directed Run Fatboy Run, and the actor also appeared in American Crime Story as Robert Kardashian, which earned him his second Primetime Emmy nomination.

Just like Matt LeBlanc, he played himself in the show Episodes and appeared in a couple of web therapy episodes with Lisa Kudrow. He was recently seen in the revival of Will & Grace, playing a character that could easily be Ross Geller. Meanwhile, his personal life has been changing lately as he separated from the British artist, Zoe Buckman.

They have a daughter and were married for seven years. Schwimmer admits that the success of the sitcom caused a problem in his real-life relationships. Furthermore, he does not have a good connection with Jennifer Aniston, who played his love interest in the show. The actress did not invite him to her wedding, and Cox has even suggested that David is the reason there is no Friends movie.

It is tough to believe that so much time has passed since the end of the show because we still remember it fondly and re-watch it all the time. Have you seen the actors in their various projects outside of the famous series? Do you still hope for a Friends revival?
