15 Celebrities Who Turned Out Gay When Most Of Us Would Never Guess

We are in the year 2018, but some people still get surprised when they realized their favorite actor or actress is homosexual. It’s crazy because several years ago, the LGBTQ+ community finally got the U.S. Supreme Court to legalize gay marriage, though there are still many rights to fight for lately. Let’s take a look at these Hollywood stars that are attracted to the same sex.

1. David Hyde Pierce

You might remember him from the fantastic sitcom Frasier, but the Emmy Award winner did not come out of the closet until later in life. Even the show would make stereotypical, gay jokes, and people laughed without noticing who they were hurting. The actor was against those parts in the series, but we know it was a time back then.

He worked on Frasier for nine years, and two years after the sitcom ended, he officially announced his sexual orientation. He married his boyfriend, Brian Hargrove in 2008. However, the couple admitted that even though they dated since 1985, they never let anyone know their situation. They also had different apartments despite a 26-year relationship.

2. Jillian Michaels

This personal trainer is best known for working on The Biggest Loser since 2004, but she was not open about her sexual identity until 2012 when she got engaged to her longtime girlfriend, Heidi Rhodes. Jillian adopted Heidi’s child named Phoenix, and then the couple took in an Ethiopian boy named Luc Enza together.

Even in the year 2012, her coming out was not great because the fitness guru experienced a lot of hate. Michaels lost a bunch of jobs including endorsement campaigns and magazine cover, but she kept going, proud of who she is. The most important thing for her is showing her children that they should always embrace their true natures.

3. Victor Garber

This legendary actor has appeared in major motion pictures like Titanic, Argo, Legally Blonde, and more. However, most people did not notice him until 2013 when he decided to reveal his sexual preference. Garber admitted to living with his boyfriend, Rainer Andreessen, in an apartment in New York City. The couple started their relationship in 1999 and finally got married in 2015.

4. Jonathan Knight

You probably remember him from the late 80s, early 90s boy band, New Kids on The Block, and female fans swooned over him for years. However, these girls had no idea that back then Knight was already feeling conflicted about his true desires. He had to hide his real self from friends when he was a teenager, afraid of receiving hate for it.

Luckily, the former teen heartthrob is doing much better now. He started dating Harley Rodriguez after they met at a New Kids on the Block’s reunion concert in 2008. The couple got engaged in 2016 but have yet to walk down the aisle together. They participated as a pair in the 26th season of the reality competition show, The Amazing Race.

5. Wentworth Miller

Everyone recognizes this actor from Prison Break, but not many know that he came out of the closet in 2013. He sat down for an interview where he talked about how horrible his teenage years were due to his lousy self-image. Miller even admitted to trying to kill himself over his sexuality. He feels much better now that he can talk about being gay openly.

6. Jodie Foster

This renowned actress, who won an Academy Award for The Silence of the Lambs and The Accused, came out in 2013 at the Golden Globe Awards. Her acting career began at the tender age of three and managed to land incredible roles. She dated Cyndi Bernard for a while and had two sons with her, but in 2008, they broke up and years later, she married Alexandra Hedison.

7. Jonathan Bennett

If you were a teen in the early 2000s, then you remember Bennett as Aaron Samuels in the iconic movie, Mean Girls. Sadly, fellow dancer, Julianne Howe, revealed Jonathan’s sexual preference in 2014 during an interview with Mario Lopez for their work in Dancing with the Stars. Oops! There is no news about his current boyfriend, but the rumor mill said that he dated Matt Dallas from Kyle XY.

8. Sarah Paulson

This actress is so versatile, but most people know her from American Horror Story. Sarah dated Holland Taylor for a while, but at the time, she did not want to label herself as a lesbian. They met ten years at a party but did not start their relationship until 2015 when they collaborated together. The couple started messaging and fell in love, even though Taylor is 32 years older than Paulson.

9. Anderson Cooper

This famous news anchor kept his sexuality a secret for almost his entire life, coming out publicly in 2012. He was always extremely private with his affairs and had only revealed to a couple of close friends that he was gay. Cooper told his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, about his true nature at the age of 21. The reporter has apparently dated Benjamin Missoni, the New York bar entrepreneur, but no one can confirm it.

“The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.”

10. Josh Hutcherson

This actor is best known for his work in the dystopian teen movie The Hunger Games. In an interview with Out Magazine, Josh said, “I would probably list myself as mostly straight. Maybe I could say right now I’m 100% straight. But who knows? In a year, I could meet a guy and be like, Whoa, I’m attracted to this person.”

At the time, they were jokingly talking about Josh loving his co-star Sam Claflin, but the actor does not rule out dating men even though he likes women now. Meanwhile, he has been a hardworking advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, after revealing that two of his uncles died of AIDS. Hutcherson was even honored with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s Vanguard Award.

11. Neil Patrick Harris

Most people got to know this actor when he was portraying the womanizer, Barney, in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. However, his real life is completely different from the show as he considered himself bisexual at first but then opened up to his mother about being gay at the age of 13. He realized his nature when actor Burt Reynolds kissed him jokingly.

In 2006, he came out officially and attended his first event with partner, David Burtka, in 2007. The couple eventually decided to have kids with a surrogate mother, and they got married in 2014, never revealing their engagement. They post pictures of their lovely family all the time, especially their matching costumes on Halloween.

12. Sam Smith

The talented singer came out publicly in 2014, and he even made a whole album for a man that had hurt him in the past. He won four Grammys at the 2015 ceremony and thanked him in his acceptance speech. We know that that guy must be kicking himself. The singer is currently dating Brandon Flynn, though there are many rumors about their possible split.

13. Ellen Page

This actress came out publicly during a speech at the Human Right Campaign, and she also talked about receiving nothing but praise for doing it. Just like many people, Ellen was hesitant to admit her orientation but hopes that her story helps others like her. She dated another woman for years, but in early 2018, she surprised everyone by marrying Emma Portner.

14. Kristen Stewart

The world got to this actress through the major motion picture franchise Twilight along with actor Robert Pattinson whom she dated for years. Their separation came after a scandal involving a male director, but in 2016, Stewart confirmed her relationship with French actress Soko. She has dated several women since then and is currently with model Stella Maxwell.

15. James Franco

Although rumors have been flying for years regarding this actor’s sexual preference, nothing was ever confirmed. In an interview with New York Magazine, Franco said, “I’m a little gay.” But that is not really coming out. Either way, it seems like the actor is great at doing homosexual roles and does not care what others think in the end.

Were you surprised by the star in this list? Who is your favorite and why? We hope that one day, no one will care what someone’s sexual preference is and just focus on who they are as people. If you liked this article, share it with your friends while wondering which actor could play for the other team. See you next time!
