It's A Good Bye Time: 13 Things We Know About GoT Season 8 So Far

After spending 2018 without a new season of Game of Thrones, we are very much looking forward to next year to begin. The finale should arrive around April or sooner, and with just six episodes, they will have to cram a lot of information in each. We have gathered several things we already know about it to whet our reader’s appetites.

1. The story of the initial episode

According to Entertainment Weekly, the first episode should focus on Winterfell with many throwbacks to the first season, especially now that the remaining Starks are reuniting, and they are also bringing Daenerys, which apparently will anger Sansa, and her horde along. We will also see new characters that will join our favorites in order to fight the Night King and his troops.

2. The most epic battle ever

The Battle of the Bastards took days to film and was the biggest fight scene for the show as of yet, but according to speculation, when our favorite characters face the dead, it’s going to blow people’s minds. One entire episode will focus on this epic encounter, and it was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, but there will be many storylines besides the battle itself.

Producer David Benioff revealed to Entertainment Weekly, “Having the largest battle doesn’t sound very exciting — it actually sounds pretty boring. Part of our challenge, and really Miguel’s challenge, is how to keep that compelling… We’ve been building toward this since the very beginning, it’s the living against the dead, and you can’t do that in a 12-minute sequence.”

3. The new season could have been three movies

Every aspect of this story is going to be better in the final season. Winterfell has been expanded, and the story got to the point that producers Benioff and D.B. Weiss thought that three films would fit perfectly. This opinion also stemmed from wanting to get enough money from HBO to complete such an ambitious project. A trilogy could have given them time and enough money.

However, because of the immense success of the show, the network gave them a whopping budget of $15 million per episode, and we love that they did not decide on movies because it would feel completely different since we saw the rest as a series, and we would have to wait even more than we already have. This time lag has been the worst.

4. Kit Harington has hinted about the end

The end of the series is the biggest secret right now in the world of entertainment, but people are dissecting everything the actor say or do. Kit, who plays Jon Snow, was recently on promotions for his new movie, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, and he said that not all fans are going to love the finale.

He also went on to say that the ending of the show could be compared to other endings in television that did not please all audiences. “My favorite TV shows are Sopranos, Breaking Bad and The Wire, and they all ended in a way that didn’t satisfy you. I think a TV series that’s spanned eight, nine years is an incredibly difficult thing to end... I think not everyone’s going to be happy.”

However, other actors like Sophie Turner, Sansa, and Nikolaj Coster-Walday, Jaime, have stated that the ending is going to surprise everyone as it is going to be unpredictable. The actress told Digital Spy, “I was satisfied with how unpredictable the show’s ending really is. I think that the fans will be satisfied with that, too.” Furthermore, HBO has Kit still rocking the shaggy look in case of reshoots.

5. The first look

HBO has already revealed one tiny sliver of a sneak peek at in their new programming for 2019. At the 1:10 mark, you can see Jon Snow hugging Sansa, finally showing the long-awaited Stark reunion. Fans are excited to see the new King of the North in Winterfell, but happiness will be short-lived since the Night King’s army is coming.

Some people suggest that this is footage from season seven, but real fans have already discerned it was brand new because Sansa looks different and angry, which is another evidence that she will not be happy about Jon’s new relationship with the Mother of Dragons, or the fact that she might be pregnant because of the infamous boat scene.

6. They are already done with shooting

The actors already revealed that the filming for the show has ended, and most of them took to social media with farewell messages. After all, this series made most of their careers. Meanwhile, Masie Williams posted this: “Goodbye Belfast. Goodbye Arya. Goodbye Game of Thrones. What a joy I’ve had. Here’s to the adventures to come #lastwomanstanding #barely.” What does that hashtag mean?

7. We can expect it before May 2019

We have been guaranteed that the show will air in the first half of 2019, but the exact date of the first episode is yet to come. There were even rumors about HBO postponing the release date, but they will air them before the 2019 Emmy cut-off date, May 31st, 2019. Ideally, the premiere would be April 21st, which is just like most of the seasons.

8. Less episodes but longer and more expensive

We already said that six episode would compose the final season, and this can be both good and bad. Fewer episodes mean that we have more budget for each of them, which undoubtedly will make for great television, but six episodes will go by in the blink of an eye. We are just glad they received so much money, as it means that dragons and fantasy will be more prominent this time around.

9. It’s going to be true to the rest of the show

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are still running the show, and they wrote a couple of episodes, which has not happened since season five. You might remember the episode where Myrcella got poisoned, or the one where Brienne killed Stannis Baratheon, or the infamous one where Cersei took the walk of shame. These guys know their stuff.

10. The rest of the writers

We also have confirmation for the writer of each episode. Number one was written by Dave Hill, while number two was written by Bryan Cogman, and the rest by our favorite Benioff and Weiss. On an interesting note, Hill was just an assistant when he thought that Olly would kill Ygritte and cause heartbreak for Snow. He was promoted after that.

11. The author might not follow the show

George RR Martin revealed in August that he had not seen season seven yet, so fans are wondering whether the next book will follow much the same story or go its own way, which could lead to a different ending. However, we know that the showrunners consult with Martin, so we realize that they follow the spirit of the author’s ideas.

12. No hacking

For the past several seasons, a couple of episodes were leaked online, and HBO has been doing their best since then to prevent it from happening again. Casey Bloys, the president of programming, revealed that several endings were shot to avoid any spoilers about the finale. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know.”

13. All we can do now is theorize

This means we will not really know the resolution until the end, so the online theories are going to be even crazier this time around. Some say that Bran Stark is the Night King because he went back in time to block the humans from fighting the Children of the Forest. Other say that Jon Snow will kill Daenerys to stop the White Walkers. It’s unlikely that the show will end on a happy note.

There seems to be a lot of time left before the premiere of the new season, and we are both excited and scared about it. What are your theories? Who will sit on the Iron Throne? Our money is on the Night King. Let us know what you think, and share this article with those friends that are waiting impatiently for the last tale of Game of Thrones.
