‘Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald’ Left Us With Many Questions, And Here Is What We Think
The movie Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald ended with a huge plot twist that could change the Harry Potter canon forever; it felt more like a J.K. Rowling book than an actual motion picture, missed a lot of development for a huge pack of involved characters and raised too many questions.
If you are a Potterhead and haven’t seen it at the theater yet, you have to go without looking at this article because we warn you - everything you think you know is about to change. Here are 21 questions that need to be answered.
1. Why did they move Grindelwald at the beginning?
The opening scene is arguably fantastic for those that have a soft spot for villains, but the question still remains. It would have been much more convenient for MACUSA to just take care of him instead of risking transporting such an individual.
2. What were the crimes of Grindelwald?
It seems that the title of the film does not exactly fit the story. We were never shown why he was such a wanted criminal even before the events of the first film in the series, speaking of which, its title, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, made complete sense.
3. What kind of relationship did Leta Lestrange and Newt Scamander have?
It was clear even from the first movie that Newt and Leta had something going on, but we never got any real answers in that aspect. Leta was revealed as Theseus fiancée, though she and Newt had a close relationship from their days at Hogwarts.
Sadly, the Lestrange girl was ostracized at school for her name and more, while the awkward Hufflepuffer isolated himself among the animals he liked because he found them better than people. Before we could discover more about this friendship, Leta was killed.
4. Who is Grindelwald’s female follower?
The woman certainly fits the bill of a Parisian villain with her intense smirk, and her name is Vinda Rosier. She does not say a lot in the film; she supports Johnny Depp’s character, often giving him the magical skull hookah.
The last name Rosier, though, it’s familiar as it belongs to one of the 28 pure-blood families that exist in the Wizarding World, like the Weasleys and the Malfoys. Her mysteriousness was intriguing, so we hope to find out more in the next movie.
5. Were the safe house owners important to the story?
When Grindelwald arrived in Paris, his followers killed a couple to take over their home, and they also murdered the baby. Most assumed they were muggles, but their true identity was not clear, so could they mean something more to the story? We think not. Probably just a cue to the Boy Who Lived and his parents' death in the Harry Potter saga.
6. Why did the magazine have such a huge error regarding an engagement?
It's revealed that Tina is mad at Scamander and started dating someone else because she read in a magazine that Newt was engaged to Leta. It was a mistake from the magazine, as she was meant to marry his brother Theseus with Newt acting as best man.
The question remains, though, because they are all prominent wizards in the community with Theseus being a top Auror, Leta belonging to such a prestigious family, and Newt being a renowned magizoologist. It makes no sense.
7. What happens to Nagini?
We saw a Korean actress, Claudia Kim, take on the role of Nagini before her curse turned her permanently into a snake, but what happens next for her? She did not join Credence and Grindelwald, so when does the curse finally take effect?
Furthermore, due to her sweet nature, it is hard to imagine why she became Lord Voldemort’s trusted pet and Horcrux. This is probably going to be a huge plot point in the next movies because the sequel portrayed her rather poor - she literary did nothing.
8. What’s up with Nagini’s clothes?
We saw her rocking an awesome dress, but the weird things are that it disappears when she transforms into a snake and seems to reappear when she is back as a human. So, how does it work? Well, the answer is probably: magic.
9. Where did Grindelwald’s weird spells come from?
This villain made all sorts of incantations in the film, some which we never saw in the Harry Potter series, and Newt did as well while looking for hints about what happened at the Paris circus. They are fantastic.
10. Why are there new beasts in this movie that don’t appear in the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?
We get a lot of cool creatures from French lore this time around, but they were never added by Newt to the “encyclopedia” he made about magical creatures. The Mataguts, Leucrotta, and the Zouwu were not even in a new edition, so we hope to see them added later on.
11. Why does Accio work on the niffler?
According to J.K. Rowling, the spell only works on inanimate objects, but Newt gathered his niffler with it at one point. It seems that a lot was retconned to make this new series work, but we are not complaining.
“While people or creatures may be indirectly moved by 'Accio-ing' objects that they are wearing or holding, this carries all kinds of risks because of the likelihood of injury to the person or beast attached to an object traveling at close to the speed of light."
12. What does the blood pact mean?
During Dumbledore’s scene at Hogwarts, we see him looking at the Mirror of Erised, and how he and Grindelwald made a blood pact not to fight each other and a pendant appear, which Grindelwald keeps close to his person.
He ultimately loses it to Newt’s niffler, but we do not know a lot about this kind of magic, though we suspect it is much like the Unbreakable Vow. It is the reason that Dumbledore constantly rejected fighting Grindelwald himself. So we can assume that people die if they break it.
13. Will we see more about their relationship in the future?
We only caught a bit of glimpse of the closeness between these two fantastic wizards, but we know that Dumbledore is gay, so it’s implied that they were together, but to what extent, and will we see in the next movies? In 2016, J.K. Rowling actually said:
"You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man. ... We'll see him at that formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch this space.”
14. Why was Professor McGonagall at Hogwarts in 1927?
This is probably another retcon that occurred in the Wizarding World because the original character was born in the 30s, and the movie was set earlier. Harry Potter big fans rejoice; others are perplexed.
15. Why is Newt “the chosen one”?
The choice of “the chosen one” in this case seems a bit arbitrary considering the fact that he is not an Auror, just an animal researcher. However, we think that it has everything to do with Credence and the obscurus.
16. Is Corvus Lestrange really dead?
At the end of the film, it was revealed that Leta changed his brother with another baby, and Corvus died after the shipwreck, but did he actually drown? Is there something deeper going on? We will have to wait for the next film.
17. What was the point of Leta’s sacrifice?
It was a bit weird that Leta suddenly decided to take on Grindelwald herself instead of joining him, but maybe she was just tired with her life after finally revealing what she had done to Corvus. Unfortunately, this is another mystery... or a poor script failure.
18. Why did Nicolas Flamel take so long to reach the cemetery?
Flamel has a crystal ball that told him what would happen hours before it did, so why did it take so long for him to get there and help? Well, we think that maybe he cannot apparate as other wizards do, and we saw that it takes a while for him to reach the other side of a room.
19. Why did Queenie join Grindelwald?
One of the oddest things was Queenie joining the villain in his quest to change the world, but was there foul play afoot? We would never connect to a wizard that wants to dominate muggles if we loved a muggle. Some fans speculate that she was under a spell.
20. Is Credence truly a Dumbledore?
The main question on everyone’s mind is if the big reveal at the end of the movie was actually real. Most people think that it was not because the timeline with the Dumbledores does not fit at all and neither does the word “brother”. The obscurial rather looks like Albus' son or nephew, or Grindelwald was simply lying, making it a double twist. Shyamalan would be proud of Rowling.
21. If true, does Dumbledore know about Credence?
We think of Dumbledore as all-knowing after the events of Harry Potter, but maybe in his youth, he was not as intuitive, or it’s a huge family secret. Aurelius existence challenges the canon drastically, so it makes sense that Albus does not know yet.
