8 Things Meghan Markle Is No Longer Allowed Simply For Marrying Prince Harry
Marrying a prince is much different in real life than what movies make us believe. Not everything is beautiful clothes, whirlwind love, and a magical wedding. Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding was, in fact, absolutely stunning, but falling in love with a man like him comes with certain sacrifices, and Markle has embraced them.
She moved to England, sold her home in Toronto, Canada, and was baptized in the Church of England, to name a few things she did before her wedding day. However, there is a lot more that she had to get used to, and it would not have been so easy for most American girls, and we will show you those things in this article.
1. Royal family members cannot take selfies
We have seen the couple greeting people all around since their nuptials, and during their royal tour, but we will never see a selfie of Meghan ever again. Not even a personal one with Harry. It’s simply not allowed among royalty. Matthew Barzun, a confidant of the Queen and U.S. ambassador, once said that Elizabeth II hates cell phones.
It seems that the Queen does not enjoy having a bunch of smartphones pointing at her when she goes to a public event. This is definitely a first-world problem, but the monarch misses eye contact, so it is not that hard to understand because a lot of us do too. Her disdain for these artifacts was adopted by the rest of the family.
2. Meghan cannot sign any more autographs for her fans
This probably was a common occurrence during her career as an actress, but one of the things she immediately gave up when she chose Prince Harry was signing her name for her legions of admirers. The reason is straightforward: security. There is a danger of signature forgery if she does it, according to Express, but there have been instances when other royals have broken this rule.
Prince Charles once signed “Charles 2010” for a man who had lost his home at Lostwithiel after a disaster, but since he did not write his full name or his actual signature, the rule was not really broken in the first place. Markle did something similar for a fan in January 2018, writing “Hi Kaitlin” instead of her full name.
3. The Duchess can no longer vote
The former actress was very political during her days in Hollywood, and Robert Lacey, a biographer of Queen Elizabeth II, was concerned by this, telling The Guardian, “I can see that this is going to be a real problem in the months and years ahead for her, an existential problem. I don't imagine the Queen will be in a rush to have Meghan at Balmoral when Trump visits.”
Royals have maintained a neutral stance when it comes to politics, and they cannot vote, but it is clear that Meghan has risen to the challenge and given up her views on the matter, choosing to focus on charity work with her husband. It might have taken some time, but the Duchess looks so happy that she might not even miss it.
4. Meghan cannot go without stockings
After their engagement was announced, people noticed her ring, but others focused on Markle’s legs more than anything, and they caused a little scandal. According to Victoria Arbiter, a royal expert, “You never see a royal without their nude stockings. I would say that's really the only hard, steadfast rule in terms of what the Queen requires."
But, we understand that things were new to her back then. We know that she is following rules to the letter nowadays and probably has a better handle of the protocol. The only way to learn is by making mistakes and trying to do better every day, and since her fashion choices have been excellent, we know she can handle it.
5. She cannot retire to her bedroom before the Queen
This rule was the worst for the late Prince Diana. According to Sir William Heseltine’s words in the book by Juliet Rieden titled The Royals in Australia, “There'd be an hour or so in the sitting room of everyone sitting around making conversation, and nobody felt it right to go to bed before the Queen did." Diana started going to bed before the Queen, and that was considered impolite.
Meghan and Prince Harry have been married for less than a year, so we think that she is still following this rule, though it might be hard these days because of her pregnancy. However, she is too new to the family to start causing trouble. We hope the Queen is considerate about her pregnant granddaughter-in-law.
6. She can no longer play Monopoly
We don’t think anyone has ever finished playing a game of Monopoly, but this is one of the most popular board games in the world, and it is also troublesome because people end up fighting or upset after a game. Queen Elizabeth II feels like this because Prince Andrew once took the game to the HQ of Leeds Building Society to play because he could not at home.
There might be a cool story behind the Queen’s distaste of this game, but we might never know. Furthermore, it is possible that Markle might not even like Monopoly, so this rule is one she could follow easily. Nowadays, you do not see many kids playing anything apart from an iPad or iPhone.
7. She had to give up her career as an actress
Outsiders that join the family have to give up their jobs. Prince Philip did it more than 70 years ago when he married Elizabeth II, and he focused on being the Queen’s consort, accompanying his wife on important events or even going in her stead. However, he was not in Hollywood like Meghan, but Grace Kelly was when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
She gave up her incredible career for love, and that is very romantic. However, it seemed like Markle never saw it as something she had to sacrifice. “I don't see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change. It's a new chapter.” She embraced her duty gracefully, and maybe that means that she was always intended for Prince Harry.
8. Meghan cannot travel alone anymore
After joining the family, Markle was given her own security guards, and her safety has to be prioritized, so the idea of traveling alone is inconceivable. All members of the family must follow this rule, and they also have to follow another one that says that no two heirs to the throne can travel together in case of an accident.
Also, some extreme measures are taken when they have to go to foreign lands. According to Gordon Rayner from The Telegraph, “Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall sometimes take their own alcohol, so there's no danger of their drinks being spiked.” He further said that a royal tour could take six months of planning.
What did you think of these sacrifices made by Meghan Markle? Would you be able to do the same for the man you love? We would like to know your opinion, so leave a message below, and share this article with your friends who loved Meghan in Suits.
