15 TV Pregnancies That Were Real (And 15 That Were Well Fabricated Fake)
We know by now that when television shows go on long enough, you're bound to have at least one pregnancy in the storyline. This plot change is generally due to two reasons: Firstly, the show needs a bit of spicing up, and secondly, the actress on the show decided to start a family of her own.
Though it may be reasonable to have a pregnancy in the plot, there is no evidence that having a baby on the show will not ruin everything. If the storyline is good, then this extra boost of excitement will be beneficial for both the sitcom and viewers alike. So, come with us as we dive into those real and fake pregnancy moments.
Let us do the countdown starting with those pregnancies that were actually real
15. Emily Deschanel - Bones
Emily started a family with her husband which had an impact on her character, Temperance Brennan, in Bones not once, but twice! On a serious note, they had to incorporate her part and step it up a notch when it came to the screenplay. These seem to be pretty standard when actresses plan on starting a new family.
14. Chelsea Peretti - Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Chelsea announced her pregnancy after the season 3 finale where her character, Gina Linetti, had been hit by a bus. In addition, the co-star Melissa Fumero hid her pregnancy by using props such as dubiously large bags for an entire season. That would have made it more evident to the audience, don't you agree?
13. Katey Sagal - Married with Children
During this hilarious comedy sitcom, Katey was playing a pregnant Peg while filming season 6. However, her pregnancy didn't go too well, and her baby was born six weeks early. Sadly, the baby was stillborn. We really empathize with Katey as that must have been a traumatizing experience for her and her family.
12. Candice King - Vampire Diaries
Candice's character, Caroline, was actually written in the storyline where she became pregnant. This was conveniently rooted in her real life as she had just gotten married to her husband and wanted to start a family. King had just married her husband and wanted to have children.
11. Molly Ringwald - The Secret Life of an American Teenager
The purpose of this series was Amy’s pregnancy and how every character dealt with it, especially when it came to her mother Anne (Molly Ringwald). It undeniably advanced the drama in the show, as Anne had an unplanned pregnancy months after her daughter had given birth to her own child.
10. Gillian Anderson - The X-Files
Gillian was pregnant twice before the series ended. The show involved her character being experimented on and impregnated by aliens, and she didn't hide her whole body, so viewers could actually see that she was indeed pregnant. This ended up where the storyline involved her being abducted a few times.
9. Alyson Hannigan - How I Met Your Mother
Alyson was pregnant twice when the sitcom How I Met Your Mother was on the air. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to fit into the storyline, and instead, the show decided to cover it all up. In fact, the HIMYM show-runners decided to turn Alyson's pregnant belly into a joke when Lily participated in a hot dog eating contest.
8. Cynthia Nixon - Sex and the City
Here is another pregnancy that was hidden under oversized clothing. Funny enough, Cynthia's pregnancy was written into the story at the same time, with her character, Miranda. She had a baby during her on-off relationship with her boyfriend Steve, and the birth of their child finally convinced them to tie a knot.
7. Marcia Cross - Desperate Housewives
During the filming of Desperate Housewives season 3, Marcia became pregnant with twins. It was not an easy pregnancy for her, and unfortunately, this landed the actress on bed rest. The show was then faced with the task of writing the pregnancy in so that it would fit with the actress, but ended up making an insane explanation: Bree faked her pregnancy.
6. Ginnifer Goodwin - One Upon A Time
When Ginnifer became pregnant with her first child, they wrote it into the storyline. Even though Neal was born at the end of season 3, however, he remained a baby until his last appearance on the show, seasons later. That was obviously really weird, and we are sure you'll agree with us that this show has its odd moments.
5. Jenna Fischer - The Office
The character Angela became pregnant in season 8 because Jenna and her character, Pam Beesley, were also pregnant. In the season 8 premiere, it was revealed that Pam and Angela were both expecting. Pam had previously had an unexpected pregnancy in season 6, but baby number two was all because of Jenna.
4. Charisma Carpenter - Angel
If you're talking about messy on-screen pregnancies on this list, here is one that deserves a gold star! Firstly, the birth put Cordelia in a coma, which ended up with her being written off the show. All of this insanity happened because the actress, Charisma, had become pregnant between seasons.
3. Lucille Ball - I Love Lucy
This lady started it all and got the ball rolling. This was a groundbreaking show because it was the first sitcoms to have a pregnancy storyline with a woman who was actually pregnant! While Lucy was permitted to be visibly pregnant, the actual word “pregnant” was never mentioned, and there certainly couldn’t be any signs of labor when the baby (Ricky Jr.) was eventually born.
2. Jennifer Garner - Alias
During season 5 of Alias, Jennifer was pregnant with her first daughter, Violet Affleck, with lucky dad being Ben Affleck at that time when they were still married. Rather than work around her pregnancy, her character became pregnant with a daughter too. Nicely done to the show-runners! Such a pity they couldn't fix Jennifer and Ben's relationship as well.
1. Lisa Kudrow - Friends
Did you know that Rachel was not the first character in Friends to have a pregnancy storyline? In season 4 of the series, Phoebe agreed to be the surrogate to her half-brother so that he could start a family with his wife. Although the pregnancy was real, Friends had to put padding onto Lisa's stomach to make it appear that she was having triplets.
Now let's move on to those fake pregnancies that you would never have expected
15. Emilie De Ravin - Lost
It certainly was a relief that Emelie was not expecting during the filming of Lost. Although the show was filmed in Hawaii, there was a lot of demanding and intense parts for these actors. In Emilie's second big television acting gig, Once Upon a Time, she actually did become pregnant. Both on and off-screen, just like one of her co-stars.
14. Mindy Kaling - The Mindy Project
It seemed that Mindy caused a bit of celebrity commotion in recent years by becoming pregnant in real-life. At the end of season 3, it was announced that Dr. Mindy Lahiri had accidentally become pregnant with her OBY-GYN co-worker and new boyfriend, Danny Castellano. We can see how that would get a few tongues wagging.
13. Dianna Argon - Glee
This fake pregnancy doesn't come as a shock to fans because it was already written into the character's origin. Although Dianna may not have been expecting, her performance was definitely believable. In the show, Quinn, Dianna's character, gave her baby up for adoption because she couldn't raise another child, even though the actress was 23 at the time.
12. Phoebe Tonkin - The Originals
The pregnancy plot that unfolded on The Vampire Diaries spin-off, The Originals, wasn’t the most ridiculous, but it came close, making it the second most insane pregnancies in television. Even though Phoebe was clearly not expecting, the show included this regardless. This would have made her baby a werewolf/vampire breed.
11. Elizabeth Banks - Scrubs
This was indeed one of the more bizarre storylines on Scrubs, when J.D. unexpectedly became a father with a doctor, Kim Briggs, who he had only been dating for a short period. Elizabeth was actually pregnant at the time, but they apparently wanted J.D. to have a baby in the weirdest way you could imagine, even though they were never intimate.
10. Ellen Pompeo - Grey's Anatomy
Meredith Grey has been pregnant three times throughout the course of Grey’s Anatomy the actress, Ellen, was not expecting in either of those situations. Meridith had to dress in large scrubs and was mostly hidden behind clipboards or other suspiciously large objects. We guess that's what these shows do when they're desperate.
9. Candice Bergen - Murphy Brown
Unlike Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy, where she was actually pregnant, this has got to be one of the most groundbreaking TV storylines ever involve a pregnancy. This 90s sitcom had the 40-something actress Candice playing the title character. They really went over the edge when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby alone.
8. Angela Kinsey - The Office
Angela Kinsey, who played Angela Martin (later Schrute) on The Office, was pregnant during the filming of the series. The fictional Angela also had a baby during the show. However, these events didn’t correspond. So, they hid her behind desks and filing cabinets to avoid revealing her belly.
7. Sofia Vergara - Moder Family
Sofia's character was pregnant with her older husband, Jay, and this was a big twist in season 3. While Gloria's pregnancy was an unexpected surprise, it did lead to a ton of hilarious moments. Vergara, like her character Gloria, had her son at a very young age. Vergara married her high school boyfriend at 18-years-old and had a son, Manolo, in 1991.
6. Bellamy Young - Scandal
Thankfully, this pregnancy storyline didn’t happen to the actress in real-life because Bellamy's future questionable child would be asking her a lot of questions if he or she ever watched his or her mother in season 2. Mellie convinces her husband to grant her a baby because an audio adult tape was leaked of Fitz with his mistress, Oliva Pope, and she believed that it was her voice on the tape.
5. Jennifer Aniston - Friends
Season 8 was primarily focussed on Rachel becoming pregnant with her ex-boyfriend, Ross. At the end of the season, Rachel has a daughter named Emma, and they decided to include this to make the show more interesting. Jennifer was never expecting during the filming of Friends, nor had any children as far as we know.
4. Fran Drescher - The Nanny
In this delightful sitcom, Fran played the Nanny, who got married to Maxwell Sheffield, and the two had a baby together. This was inevitable, but Fran was never expecting, and it seemed like the show-runners rushed this last minute scene into the plot. As far as we know, she has never had any kids.
3. Emilia Clarke - Game of Thrones
Daenerys Targaryen’s pregnancy on Game of Thrones ended the way nearly all happy events do on fantasy series... badly. During season 1, Danny became pregnant with the son of her new husband, Khal Drogo. Tragically, she lost her husband and son by the end of the season. Thankfully, Emilia was never expecting, but it looked realistic.
2. Gina Rodriquez - Jane The Virgin
Well, this was not surprising at all because the initial concept of Jane revolved around her being pregnant after being artificially inseminated by accident in the first episode. That sounds nightmarish, but the show didn't want to find a real-life pregnant actress to play the part. They pulled it off because they employed flashbacks of a non-pregnant Jane.
1. Sarah Wayne Callies - The Walking Dead
We all know that there are fans who love most of these characters, and then those who absolutely hate others. Lori, through no fault of the actress Sarah, was an excruciating walking pile of contradictions. Some of her worst moments happened when she was pregnant during season 3. Her uncertainty about the father was straight out of a comic book.
