Top 10 Insane Things J.K. Rowling Has Uncovered About Harry Potter After Series End
A lot of time has passed since Deathly Hallows Part 2 graced the big screen, but that did not slow down the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Now, it’s actually bigger than ever with the upcoming premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Fans just cannot get enough of this universe and with good reason. Author J.K. Rowling has also taken to social media from time to time to announce tidbit facts that no one knew before and were not included in the books.
10. The houses of the next generation
Before the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we had all been left wondering which House James Sirius Potter had joined at Hogwarts. In 2015, the author took to Twitter to reveal this information, on the actual day of his sorting.
In case you don’t remember, the battle of Hogwarts took place in 1997, so the final scene in the last movie was in the year 2015. Back to the subject, Rowling said that the young Potter was sorted into Gryffindor, unsurprisingly, and Teddy Lupin became a Hufflepuff and Head Boy too.
9. Eleven wizarding schools in the world
One of the things that is not discussed much in the original story was the magic world outside of the United Kingdom. Of course, we saw the students of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons during Goblet of Fire, but we have seen a lot of information about this in the last few years.
After launching the website Pottermore, Rowling revealed that there were eleven schools for wizards around the planet, and she wrote explanations to each of them, so die-hard fans can get their fix and discover where they would study if they had magic.
8. Her opinion about Snape
We were all heartbroken at the end of Deathly Hallows when it was finally revealed that Snape was a good guy and had always protected Harry because he loved Lily. He was definitely the most complicated character in this series.
She talked about him on Twitter in 2015: “Snape is all grey. You can’t make him a saint: He was vindictive and bullying. You can’t make him a devil: he died saving the wizarding world.” Harry named his second son Albus Severus to tribute the sacrifice.
7. Harry and Ron never graduated from Hogwarts
In book seven, the main trio is on the run as they cannot return to school because Voldemort and the Death Eaters took over the Ministry of Magic, and because they needed to the find the Horcruxes. That means that their seventh year was gone.
After the Battle of Hogwarts, Hermione went back to school, but Harry and Ron were offered Auror positions by the new Minister of Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and they took him up on the offer as they were not as academic-minded as their friend.
6. The trio worked for the Ministry
Harry had always expressed his desire to become an Auror, so he joined that department along with Ron. Meanwhile, after Hermione finished school, she worked for Magical Law Enforcement, continuing to fight for house-elf rights.
A few years later, Ron leaves the Ministry to help George run the joke shop, but Harry continued until he became the Head of the Auror Department. Hermione was unsurprisingly named Minister of Magic, after climbing the corporate ladder.
5. Hogwarts has no tuition
Rowling has never been afraid to express her political opinions on social media, and how they relate to the world of Harry Potter. One of the best insights came when she revealed that Hogwarts’ tuition is free, as it is covered by the Ministry of Magic.
It’s not all perfect, though, as we know that the cost of books and supplies can be hefty which was hard on families like the Weasleys. However, we can still applaud the fact that every wizard and witch has the right to go to school.
4. Some characters survived for a reason
We were sad many great people die in this story, but some of them had been planned by the author in advanced to give Harry the motivation to go on alone. She almost killed off Arthur Weasley in Order of Phoenix, but she knew that their family could not handle such a loss.
At one point, Rowling even considered ending Ron, but that was just an idea. Lupin and Tonks lost their lives in the Battle of Hogwarts, but this was not always the plan. She came up with an idea for Teddy’s future, so his parents had to die.
3. Hermione was not really white
After casting the play The Cursed Child, many people were angry that Noma Dumezweni, a black actress, had been chosen for the role of Hermione. Rowling took to social media rapidly to express her support and remarked that in the books, she had never talked about Hermione’s race.
Some fans had actually loved the idea that she could be black or biracial, so they were happy when the author cleared things up. The success of the play is a testament that this universe is just that good and that Noma did a good job.
2. Rowling would change Ron and Hermione’s relationship
Fans of this story wanted these two together since the beginning, as they seemed to hate each other at first, and the author agreed that she had always seen them as a couple in the end. In 2014, she had an interview with Emma Watson; Rowling said that they might not be the best union.
She also said that they were “wish fulfillment” and were incompatible in most aspects, so later in life, they probably would have needed some counseling. Reports about those words poured saying that Hermione should have ended up with Harry, but the author never actually said that.
1. Dumbledore is gay
The subject of sexual orientation never really came up during the books, so when Rowling revealed this tidbit about the famous Hogwarts Headmaster, everyone was shocked. She went on to say that it was never mentioned because the story was about Harry, not Dumbledore.
The author also mentioned that he is her favorite character after the Boy Who Lived, of course. We know that Rowling is a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, so when fans asked if there were gay students at Hogwarts, she shared a meme that read:
“If Harry Potter taught us anything, it’s that no one should live in a closet.”
