Aquaman's Solo Debut: 10 Facts, 5 Rumors And 5 Things That Have No Chance To Happen

Everyone is anxiously waiting to see how Aquaman fairs in theaters as it might save the current continuity of DC films, but there are many things to look forward to in this new movie, so we are hopeful. In terms of plot, certain things have been confirmed, others are merely speculation, and there are some that we wish would but probably won’t. Let’s dive in these insights.

1. Black Manta – Totally happening

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking on the role of Aquaman’s iconic foe on the big screen, but he is not the main nemesis in this story. Orm will take that role, though adding Black Manta could set up the universe for future films. David Hyde has an interesting backstory that could really be explored, especially now that villains are also leading their own movies.

2. A stellar cast – YES!

Warner Bros. is putting all their eggs in one basket with this film, and they have included a fantastic group of actors like Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Patrick Wilson as Orm, multiple-award winner Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, and Academy Award winner Willem Dafoe, who starred in a Marvel movie, will be returning as Vulko, who was cut from Justice League. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard will be the leads.

3. A relationship with Mera – Maybe

We know that most superhero movies do not include that much romance or relationships, but Aquaman and Mera are like Superman and Lois Lane. It would be silly not to add this side of their story in the film, mainly because it looks like Mera is not just a love interest as she will play an essential role in Arthur’s life.

4. Batman or Superman Cameo – Don’t expect it

In September, it was revealed that Henry Cavill was officially out as Superman, a powerful character, although some say that it wasn't as definitive as some may think, and Ben Affleck has not been confirmed yet, so it’s unlikely that we will see these characters cameo in this movie, especially after the rumor that Warner plans to relaunch the DCEU softly by removing Snyder's films from canon. We might get a treat with a surprise appearance from The Flash or Cyborg, but that has not been established either.

5. Orm – He will appear

The main antagonist in Arthur’s origin story will be his half-brother Orm, aka the Ocean Master. Patrick Wilson will be taking on the role, and you might remember him from The Conjuring and Insidious, also directed by James Wan. Orm is one of the best DC villains in general, and Wilson is bound to look cool facing off against Momoa.

6. Expanding the Justice League intro – For sure!

There was a brief Aquaman backstory in Justice League, which introduced many cool characters, with Mera and a few Atlanteans, but he was not the focus of that film, so we can expect his origin movie to expand on everything we saw in that introduction. We will get to see Atlantis in full color and some great underwater CGI actions, as well as a look into Arthur’s childhood.

7. Superhero costume similar to the comic book – Get ready for a treat!

Since his appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, we knew that Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was utterly different from the comic book version, as it was always hard to take that character seriously, just like some in upcoming movies. However, this Aquaman is something else, and we will get a glimpse of Jason wearing a costume similar to the original version.

8. An appearance by Darkseid – Don’t wait for this

Fans have been eagerly waiting for an appearance of Darkseid as the Justice League set up for his introduction in this continuity, but we only got Steppenwolf in the end. Some people have theorized that Darkseid could be included in Aquaman, but that’s probably asking too much of an origin story, especially because the future of the DC films is not set.

9. His origin – Confirmed

James Wan has set the stage for a full presentation of this character’s backstory. There will be flashbacks of his childhood, and even a few surprises, to introduce this hero properly. The plot of the film is a political war in Atlantis between Orm and Arthur, and the trailer has shown us CG sea creatures battling it off.

10. Torn between two sides of himself – We will see this

As a half-human, half-Atlantean, Arthur has never felt comfortable in one place. On land, he is a fish out of water, but in Atlantis, he is considered an outsider. Many of the Aquaman stories released in the past years have focused on this part of the character, and the film will include them too as it is the best way to understand his origin truly.

11. Comedy film – Maybe

The recent DC films have all been very dark, which is probably one of the reasons why they have not done well in theaters. Meanwhile, Marvel movies are colorful, and most have included several comedic parts that really bring out the story. Aquaman should consist of a bunch of humor as part of the storyline to make up for the moroseness of previous movies.

12. Feuding with Manta – Not happening yet

Despite the appearance of David Hyde in the film, Arthur will not be facing off completely against this villain yet. As we mentioned, the central antagonist in this story is Orm, Arthur’s half-brother, who wants to wage war on humans for their treatment of the ocean. However, Black Manta could be part of future projects.

13. No air bubbles – Yes

We all enjoyed seeing Jason Momoa as Aquaman in Justice League, along with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. In fact, they were the best part of it. The problem is that we never saw Aquaman fighting underwater, and in comic books, Mera has to create air pockets so they can speak to each other under the sea. That is not going to happen in this film. It will be like a regular conversation.

14. A lot of CGI and special effects – We are looking forward to this

James Wan has become a real household name when it comes to directing. Starting off with Saw and Fast Seven, then moving on with The Conjuring and Insidious, we have seen all kinds of special effects from this man. You can definitely expect some amazing computerized creations in Aquaman, primarily because of the sea creatures.

15.  Sea monsters – This might happen

We have seen a bunch of underwater animals in the trailer such as sharks, crocodiles, and more. However, many Aquaman stories have featured interesting monsters that would be awesome to see on the big screen, and with James Wan penchant for horror, this could be the great twist a DC film needs. Release the Kraken!

16. Setting up for more DC films – Not so much

Warner Bros. might not have given up on the DCEU with several projects on the way like Shazam!, Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman 1984, a movie that will continue the female director revolution right now, but it seems that James Wan will be more focused on creating a great story about Aquaman than trying to set up things for the future as most Marvel movies do. Finally!

17. Xebel – Yes!

Xebel has been a rival of Atlantis for many stories in Aquaman, even Mera comes from there, as she had been sent to kill Arthur. The fact that she did not murder him, increased the conflict between both nations. It’s said that Xebel will, at least, be mentioned in this story, and Dolph Lundgren will play Nereus, the King of Xebel.

18. A connection with Mera – This will happen

Based on the trailers, Mera does not seem to like Arthur at first, but she will play a big part in this movies, so a relationship with Aquaman will be formed. However, as we mentioned previously, a romance has not been guaranteed yet, but it might happen in the end after they go through war together.

19. Justice League: Throne of Atlantis – Still a rumor

This movie seems to be an adaption of Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, which featured a war between Atlantis and the world above water. Black Manta allied with Orm, and they attacked the underwater nation so that Atlanteans would want to battle against humans. We won’t see the Justice League here, but it looks like this is going to happen.

20. Other characters – Don’t wait for this

All comic books fans hope to see their favorite characters on the big screen, but many of these superhero movies have to omit certain people when adapting the story. Aquaman will undoubtedly feature the most critical roles like Mera, Orm, and Black Manta, but Aqualad and Tempest will not be making an appearance in this film.

What did you think of these facts and rumors about the upcoming Aquaman movie? Are you excited to see it in theaters soon? If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cannot wait to see Jason Momoa all wet. Until next time!
