Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: what is really going on?
Lady Gaga always steals the show when she makes an appearance, and this latest film is no exception. Fans are spreading rumors about the star singer and actress with her recent project remake of A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper is said to have been swooned by the Stunning Gaga, and the two appeared to be in their own sort of romantic bubble when they attended the Toronto Film Festival, which awarded them a standing ovation.
The first time Bradley set eyes on Lady Gaga singing live, she was performing “La Vie en Rose” at a benefit in Los Angeles. “She leveled the entire room when she came out”, said Cooper at the Toronto Film Festival, during a press conference for A Star Is Born. “It was insane. And I thought, right then, that song is in the movie”. He loved her performance and voice so much that not only did the song end up in his remake: Gaga also performs as Édith Piaf in the scene where Bradley's character, Jackson Maine, first laid eyes on Gaga’s Ally.
While speaking about remaking the beloved movie, it quickly became clear how much Cooper and Gaga’s real-life connection mirrors their characters’. “From the moment he came to my home, and I opened the door, and we locked eyes, I felt an instant connection with him”, Gaga said. They are both Italian and hit it off immediately, she explained, and then Bradley asked Gaga whether she wanted to sing the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Midnight Special” together.
“I quickly printed out the sheet music”, Gaga said later that evening while on stage at the Elgin Theater, after the film had received a standing ovation. “I sat down at the piano with him, and I was sight reading. I didn’t know the song that well, so I was a little nervous”. “She was nervous?” Bradley said, sitting next to her. “Then all of a sudden, he began to sing”, Gaga continued. “I just stopped playing instantly, and I looked at him and said, "Bradley, your voice is incredible. You have a real voice".
He sings from his soul. He sings from his gut. Some people can do many acrobatics with their voice, but to tell a story with his voice is a different animal. That was us singing together for the first time—we were laughing, harmonizing, singing.” She reached out and touched his hand as she continued, “The truth is, I made this film with Bradley because I believe in him as a filmmaker, an actor, as a screenwriter, as a musician.
He has it all in spades, and I just feel very privileged to be here on stage with you tonight”. Braley played an alcoholic musician with a traumatic history and made it clear that he feels the same way as Gaga does. “I wanted to tell a story about people needing each other and how hard that is no matter your background”, Bradley said at the film’s premiere. “The whole thing is that these two people found each other and it is pure love.
And it is easier when you have somebody with you going down the road. And I had that with Stefani going down this road. I can’t imagine having the courage to do it without her”. Gaga returned his love again: “I wanted to give everything that I had—every last drop of blood, all of my fear, all of my shame, all of my pain, all of my love, all of my kindness, everything”, she said. “This entire experience was life-changing. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a closer artistic relationship than I have had with Bradley, a closer exchange.
It meant a lot to me, and I think to both of us, that at the beginning of making this film we kind of shook hands literally and he said, ‘You are an actress.’ I said to him, ‘You are a musician”. Gaga said that she realized that Bradley had truly become a musician when they recorded a session together. When he walked into the sound booth and immediately criticized what he heard, he said, “This is not Jackson’s sound”, Gaga stated, “I thought, ‘O.K., now we have a musician on our hands’”.
For the concert scenes, audiences are on stage with Bradley as he looks out over thousands of fans. He said that he was inspired to film that P.O.V. while onstage at a Metallica concert, where the actor was lucky enough to be standing behind Lars Ulrich’s drum kit. Bradley was able to see the focus and passion that Ulrich poured out, and he immediately knew that he wanted to give his audience a similar experience. Bradley had to figure out how do reperform this authentically and perform it in front of thousands of people.
So he decided to get a little crafty and asked fellow musicians whether he and his crew could have a look at their concert set and film a quick scene. This meant he had to be more than prepared, and Bradley worked widely with guitarist Lukas Nelson, the son of Willie Nelson, who hung out in Bradley's basement every night for a year to teach the actor how to perform and present himself as a musician. When he spoke to Willie on stage that Sunday, he said, “I remember you said to me, ‘Look man, when you get in front of an audience you better have sung this song 1,000 times, and maybe 10,000 times.
Because the first thing that is going to happen is you are going to lose your breath”. Willie appears in the film with his Promise of the Real band playing behind Bradley on stage. Thankfully Cooper listened when he jumped onstage at a Willie Nelson and Jamey Johnson's concert to perform the movie’s opening number, "Black Eyes", which was written by Bradley and Willie, the Star Is Born crew only had eight minutes to get the perfect scene.
Another performance in A Star Is Born was filmed in half the time: “We went to Glastonbury and shot for four minutes before Kris Kristofferson went on and performed for 80,000 people”, Bradley said. The music was compelling enough to impress Sam Elliott, who plays Jackson’s brother. “Every time anybody started singing in this thing, I started crying”, he said. The first time that Bradley met Sam, he brought an audio tape with him.
He was so determined to have Sam play his older brother, that the actor and director had already devoted a significant amount of time with a vocal coach to be able to match Sam's deep, resonant voice. “I was really touched”, Sam said. The cast said that Bradley had been collaborative and created an open set, and had also invited co-star, Dave Chappelle’s young daughter to have a small part in the film.
The director kept the atmosphere very relaxed, and Dave said, “He would be talking to me about a scene and what the characters were feeling, and then all of a sudden he was slurring, and I was like, ‘Oh shit, we’re shooting’”. After Bradley heard Gaga reminiscing about her early performances in one particular drag bar, he changed the setting of their characters’ meeting to be a drag bar. “It was an absolute dream of a scene and moment in this film”, Gaga said. “I make a joke sometimes that behind every female icon is a gay man.
I really wouldn’t be here without the gay community, and what they have taught me about love and acceptance and bravery”. Bradley also cast two drag queens Gaga personally requested, Shangela Laquifa Wadley and Willem Belli, whom, as Cooper put it, are “like gold”. As Gaga told reporters that Saturday, “I am so glad you are going to see the movie. But in a way, I wish I could give you what we all got to experience working for him because it really was an honor and a privilege to witness.”
That premiere was Dave's first time seeing the film, and although he knew the story and script, he became very emotional with the rest of the audience. “Good God”, Dave exclaimed afterward. “I feel terrible! I need a drink”. Have you seen these two in actions? What are your thoughts about Bradley and Gaga, and do you think they're an item?
