Avengers 4 Trailer Might Have Spoiled Cap's Death
After months of waiting, we finally got the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame which revealed many things, like the name of the final movie. However, there were also several indications that Captain America might die in this motion picture, and there has been a bunch of speculation regarding that matter because Chris Evans’ contract has expired. Let’s take a look at this.
One of the many things most people noticed about the trailer is the fact that Captain America has returned to his previous clean-cut look, shaving his facial hair off. He had adopted a more Thor-looking style when he and his buddies were fugitives from the law after refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War.
We really miss his beard, though. Another critical part of this first teaser was the picture of Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers’ true love. This is not just a picture, but the one in the compass that was first seen in Captain America: The First Avenger. In case you do not remember, Steve had placed it on top of the control panel of Red Skull’s ship after saying goodbye to his girl.
This object was the last thing he had looked at before “dying”, so the one in the trailer could be interpreted as a foreboding that Steve Rogers might actually perish in the final Avengers movie. Peggy Carter died in Civil War, but there is speculation that perhaps these two lovebirds might reunite at a point in time where they have the same age.
Another important aspect to note is that Black Widow is the one holding the compass and not Steve Rogers. This could mean that Captain America is confiding everything to his friend about Peggy and his plans to defeat Thanos while thinking about their loved ones, or perhaps, Natasha Romanoff is holding the artifact after the real death of Captain America.
Chris Evans’ says goodbye
A few months ago, the actor took to his social media with a heartbreaking goodbye message to the MCU after the reshoots for Endgame were finally done. Fans immediately started sending him praises and love after portraying the important character for so many years, and they also began theorizing that it meant that Steve Rogers would die in the final film. Chris Evans said:
“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day, to say the least. Playing this role over the last eight years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
The actor later had to clarify his wording as many people took this message to be a spoiler. During an appearance in the Ace Comic Con in Chicago, Evans said, “I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler. I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing.”
“That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry. You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I'd feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.”
The theory about Cap’s sacrifice
For several months now, fans have been talking about the possibility of time travel in Endgame, and also about what the word “endgame” really means. Doctor Strange told Tony, “We are in the endgame now,” during the fight against Thanos where they tried to take the Infinity Gauntlet away from the Mad Titan. In the end, Doctor Strange has to give up the Time Stone to save Iron Man’s life.
In the game of chess, endgame means a point when a player has to start making sacrifices in order to get to the king. Therefore, many people have said stated that defeating Thanos might be a bittersweet experience because, in order to stop such a tragic event, some sacrifices will have to be made by our favorite superheroes.
Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Thor are perhaps the most devastated Avenger at this point, having lost almost everything they hold dear. Tony had his worst fears realized, Thor saw the destruction of Asgard and its people, and Steve Rogers lost important friends along the way. His personality indicates that it’s a possibility that he could give up his life for the sake of the universe.
If time travel is involved somehow in this movie, people have stated that Cap could go back in time, reuniting with Peggy Carter in the 40s, but somehow disappearing from the modern era of the Avengers. Changing the future is no easy matter, and it might mean that he could never go back to the present. Furthermore, there is one key line from Infinity War that further evidences his death.
Captain America told Vision that they do not trade lives, which some fans have taken as a foreshadow that they will have to do this in the next film, and we do not think Steve Rogers will let anyone but him become the sacrificial lamb in such an important matter. Even if their plan does not involve time travel, it’s very likely that Cap will die.
Black Widow and he have some kind of idea in place that Natasha is sure will succeed as she says, “This is going to work, Steve," but as Cap told her, “I know it is. Because I don't know what I'm going to do if it doesn't.” This indicates that Steve is adamant about reversing the effects of Thanos’ snap and restoring all the creatures that were lost.
Do you think Captain America will die in the next film? Is there another possibility with the actor leaving the MCU? Could he be reuniting with Peggy and finally getting his happy ending? We will find out on April 26, 2019. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who hate having to say goodbye to Chris Evans. See you next time!
