A List of Marvel's Phase 4 Movies in Development: The Return of Post-Snap Characters is Puzzling
Most fans know that the MCU films have been grouped into “phases”, and we are currently in Phase Three which is supposed to end with Avengers: Endgame. There is not a lot of information regarding Phase Four, and things can still change because nothing is set in stone yet, but we know about some of the movies that will represent the new phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so let’s take a look.
Phases One, Two, and Three
Everything from 2008 to 2012 is part of the first phase in the MCU, which established a universe unlike any other cinematic event ever. These movies include Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and finally The Avengers. The final film was the first big crossover motion picture for the franchise.
Phase Two consisted of Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron released in 2015. That same year we saw Ant-Man as well, which served a bridge between the second phase and the third one. In 2016, the MCU started the third phase with Captain America: Civil War.
The following movies were Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. We are still waiting for Captain Marvel, and this phase will end with Avengers: Endgame, the tenth film. This was announced by Marvel Studios back in 2014, but have yet to confirm anything for Phase Four. Though, we know about several movies to come.
1. Spider-Man: Far From Home
This is the only film that is actually confirmed by Marvel. It’s expected to be the sequel of Homecoming, but also the first release after Endgame. We do not know yet how Tom Holland will be back, since the events of Infinity War, but this adventure will send Peter Parker far from his home with his schoolmates. Jacob Batalon and Zendaya will be reprising their roles too.
The villain of the film will be Mysterio played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and Michael Keaton will return as Vulture. However, there is a lot of speculation regarding the appearance of several other villains as well as Nick Fury and Maria Hill somehow involved in this adventure. Jon Watts will be directing this one as well, and it’s set to release on July 5, 2019.
2. Black Widow
There has been a lot of speculation regarding a Black Widow solo movie with Scarlet Johansson, who has been playing the role since Iron Man 2. The script was written by Jac Shaeffer, who was also involved in Captain Marvel, and this project will mark the second solo female superhero motion picture in the MCU. Cate Shortland is set to direct, but we do not know much about the plot yet though there are plans for a 2020 release.
3. The Eternals
Marvel has been able to turn less popular characters into big figures, like Iron Man, so they are using that strategy once again with the superior beings called The Eternals created by Jack Kirby. Several of the main Eternals are bound to appear. Chloe Zhao, known for The Rider, was hired to direct the script penned by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. This one is also expected for 2020.
4. Black Panther 2
After the success of the first film, there was no way that Marvel would give up on making a second film about the Wakandan warrior king and his people. Black Panther 2 was a given almost since the release of the first one. We were expecting Ryan Coogler to direct the sequel as well, but nothing had been confirmed until recently. It has been said that he will be working on the script all 2019.
The production will be starting sometime in late-2019, though they are still working out everything, you can bet that Chadwick Boseman will be back as T’Challa. We are also eager for the appearance of Letitia Wright as Shuri, Dania Gurira as Okoye, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia and even Winston Duke as M’Baku became a fan favorite. It’s expected for a February 2021 release.
Marvel recently revealed that they are working on the story of Shang-Chi, as the studio had been wanting to make this one since the very beginning of the MCU. They have hired David Callaham to write the script, and it’s set to make history as the first Asian superhero movie. If you do not remember well, Shang-Chi is a Kung-Fu master that was trained as a mercenary from a young age. Marvel is currently looking for an Asian director to lead the motion picture.
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
This movie was a definite of Phase four, but sadly, due to the scandal regarding James Gunn’s past tweets, the studio had to fire the director and the production was halted. However, it has been stated that they will use his script which was finished before this controversial decision. It was originally planned for a 2020 release, but things are up in the air at the moment.
7. Doctor Strange 2
This is another MCU film that most fans thought was a done deal, and even Kevin Feige confirmed they were bringing Benedict Cumberbatch back as the powerful sorcerer. Director Scott Derrickson even gave some teasers online, though he has not been officially hired for the sequel. Production was supposed to start this year, but that did not happen. Marvel usually includes two sequels and new franchise each year, so we are hopeful that this one will make it to Phase Four.
If Doctor Strange 2 is not included in this new phase, then other projects might take precedence. Sony and Marvel are set to release a trilogy about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and perhaps Venom will be included, so maybe the third one will make it in this phase. There is also the possibility that another Ant-Man and the Wasp will be created as that movie made more than $600 million around the world.
We are also expecting the success of Captain Marvel, even though Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers has not officially debuted in the MCU yet. They might make a second film depending on the viewer’s reception. None of these have been confirmed yet, so we will have to wait for any news from the studio directly. They are probably keeping things tightlipped to avoid any Endgame spoilers.
What do you think of the possible new projects in the MCU? Which one are you looking forward to the most? We are especially excited about a sequel for Doctor Strange and Black Panther, but all the others look great too. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cannot wait for more superheroes films. See you next time!
