The MCU Has Reason To Be Scared Of The Upcoming Joker Movie

DC is working on Joker, a film outside the DCEU about the origin of Batman’s greatest foe starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron. Todd Phillips is taking the reins of this project, and if it works, it could end up hurting the MCU in unexpected ways for Marvel. For now, here’s everything we know about the film.

The origin

The movie is planned for October 4, 2019, and it was co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver with Phoenix as the clown master of crime. It will introduce the origins of this villain in a manner which has not been presented before, using details from Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, which was somewhat seen in Tim Burton’s Batman, where Jack Nicholson played the role.

The Joker once said, “If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" So, DC has decided to play with the different backstories of these villains, and the idea of this joker as a failed comedian draws parallels with Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy. This film will take place in the 80s like the sequel for Wonder Woman.

Joaquin Phoenix for the role

Warner Bros. originally stated that they desired a big star for the part, and many rumors said that Leonardo DiCaprio was a contender, but instead, Phoenix nabbed the role. The actor has been hoping to land a comic book villain for a while but did not want to take on the Joker because of the late Heath Ledger’s work.

Arthur Fleck

The film is about the life of Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian. In summer 2018, leaked photos from the set showed Joaquin in a normal clown costume, as that is his day job while he makes his way in the world of comedy. When Joker becomes more of a villain than a comic, he stills keeps parts of his makeup but changes to a red suit.

Supporting roles

Aside from Phoenix, other big names in the business have signed up for the film, as superheroes and supervillains are popular at the moment. Robert De Niro is going to play a talk show host, and Marc Maron, better known for GLOW, will be playing the producer. Zazie Beetz from Deadpool 2 is going to play Sophie Dumond, a Lower East Side single mom.

Brett Cullen will be playing the role of Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father, and the role of young Bruce will be taken by Dante Pereira-Olson. The butler, Alfred Pennyworth, will be played by Douglas Hodge, while Shea Whigham and Bill Camp are going to portray Gotham policemen. It is going to be exciting seeing these people acting together.

Todd Phillips as director

As we mentioned earlier, Todd Phillips has worked on writing this story and will be the director as well. He is best known for his work on The Hangover but has been making films for more than 25 years. His credits include Road Trip, Old School, Starsky & Hutch, Due Date, and War Dogs.

Martin Scorsese will not be working on this movie

There were many rumors that Scorsese would be part of this project, and people were both excited and surprised. The speculation said that he would be co-producing the film with Phillips, but once the film was confirmed, his name was noticeably absent. It would not make sense for a person of his caliber to work on a supervillain motion picture.

Not that big of a budget

Warner Bros. has allegedly allocated $55 million for the film, which is a lot of money for normal people but not a movie which should have many special effects. Most superhero franchises these days exceed the $200 million budget. Avengers: Infinity War’s numbers were somewhere around $316 to $400 million. Deadpool worked with $58 million.

October 2019

As we mentioned earlier as well, the film is expected for October 4, 2019, and it will be the first time that DC releases three films in one year. Even though it won’t be part of the DCEU, it will certainly be an interesting contrast with their other projects slated for 2019 like Shazam and Wonder Woman 1984.

DC “Dark” Franchise

Aside from being the first DC film released apart from the DCEU, it will be much darker and intended for a more mature audience. DC Dark, or DC Black as some are calling it, will use stories from the comic book as a basis to experiment with. It might focus on many famous DC villains who have not been introduced in film before. Moreover, it has the freedom to do whatever they want because each movie will not be part of a joint universe.

What happens with Jared Leto?

Not many people enjoyed Leto’s interpretation of the Joker in Suicide Squad, and he only appeared for 15 minutes. However, this actor is going to remain as the DCEU’s Joker as Joaquin’s character has nothing to do with that world. It has been reported that Leto will get his own Joker movie, and there are plans to release one about Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie.

No trailer or poster yet

Not much has been released yet to promote this new film, aside from a few pictures of Joaquin on set in the clown costume. There are still several months to go before anything is uploaded online, so it’s likely that we will not be getting any teasers until next year.

Why is the MCU in trouble?

The fact is that the MCU is a bit tied up creatively because their films take place in the same universe. Every single one has a purpose and should build upon the next one. This has been part of the reason why they have been so successful, and why Marvel has changed the landscape of modern franchise movies. But, no one ever knows when things might change.

If Joker is successful, another way of telling these comic book-based tales might be presented, and people could enjoy watching standalone movies instead of having to keep up with all the releases from the studio. Up until now, Warner Bros. has been trying to recreate Marvel’s formula without much success.

Most of the DCEU’s movies have not been well received except for Wonder Woman, which could be taken as a standalone origin story. The company has decided to take a different direction with this villain movie, and it could be successful just like Sony’s Venom, which does not seem to connect to any other film.

This new project, aside from creating the new DC Dark brand, will not be working with the canon established by recent films. Joker will just be based on the comic book, and fans are excited to see how they handle this different direction. With an amazing cast selected, and the liberty to do as they wish, the creators could take this film to whole new levels.

Do you think this film will actually affect the MCU? Could standalone superhero movies be just as successful as big sagas? We would like to know your opinion, so leave a comment below, and share this article with all your friends who have always liked the Joker.
