Sarah Ferguson was one of the lucky survivors of 9/11 and got a lesson for life that day
There is nothing better to change your perspective of life than a close-to-death experience. Human beings need to be shaken and taken out of their comfort zones to understand what really matters and is valuable in our existence, and Sarah Ferguson, aka Fergie, knows about this firsthand.
Why, you ask? Perhaps you didn't know, but it turns out that the Duchess of York is one of the survivors of the 9/11 tragedy. Intriguing details like this abound in her life, and that is why we're taking a closer look at this lesser known royal. Let's dive deeper into the history of Sarah Ferguson.
A bit of her bio
Sarah Margaret Ferguson, better known by her nickname, Fergie, is Prince Andrew's former wife and the mother of Princesses Beatriz and Eugenie. She was just the daughter of a major until a young Prince Andrew placed his eyes on her in 1985, and shortly after, he proposed to the bubbly and courageous ginger girl.
A year later, in 1986, Sarah and Andrew tied the knot. However, after two beautiful daughters and five years together, the bond between the two weakened and the marriage was in serious trouble to the point of divorce. In May 1996, Andrew and Sarah mutually decided to separate legally.
Her relationship with her daughters
But since her divorce, Fergie became one of the most complicated members of the royal family. She still attends family events, is involved in charity, and to make matters even worse, she lives with her former husband on royal property. We are pretty sure that the royal family is as bewildered as we are.
Perhaps, the fact that the whole family lives in the same place (or lived before Eugenie wedded) made the mother had a close relationship with her daughters. They're often seen together, and Fergie usually attends events with her offspring. In fact, they have a charitable organization they founded together, Key to Freedom.
When it was time to celebrate Eugenie's nuptials, the Duchess of York was one of the first ones to be there. According to Harper's Bazaar, she was also deeply involved in the organization of the evening party and even the guest list for Windsor, which was very eclectic and exciting.
More recently, she opened up about the emotional reason she wore a green colored dress during the royal wedding of her daughter, Princess Eugenie. As you might recall, Fergie showed up on her daughter's big day wearing an all-emerald ensemble, but the monochrome look had a sentimental meaning hidden.
The poignant reason was her own wedding. Sarah had a vintage Manolo Blahnik clutch bag that day, and it turns out it belonged to her mother, Susan Barrantes, who died some years after the royal wedding. Barrantes wore it during her daughter's nuptials, and then Sarah kept the bag after her demise.
And although everyone can see that the clutch bag is a brownish color, it was what was inside that inspired Fergie's outfit. She found the admission tickets for her ceremony, and guess what color they were? You're right! They were green! And that is the reason why the mother-of-two selected the shade.
The moment that changed her life
After a series of scandals and several financial crises that almost drowned her in debt, Fergie managed to get her life back on track and devoted her time to philanthropy work. As she said, charity "has certainly made me a better mother to my daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, giving me a sense of perspective."
She also added that it allowed her to encourage her daughters to use the platform they have to get involved in charitable work. Moreover, the Duchess of York explained that helping others probably saved her life by giving her purpose through hard times.
However, back on September 11, 2001, philanthropy was not precisely what saved her life. Sarah was spending some time in New York where she ran her charity called Chances for Children. She had her office on the 101st floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
That fateful day, Ferguson was heading over to the Twin Towers but was running late by around 20 minutes because she got stuck in traffic. Little did she know that those 20 minutes would be life-saving. If it hadn't been for traffic, the 59-year-old Duchess wouldn't have been able to evade certain death.
As all of us might remember, two hijacked planes crashed into the buildings, causing a horrible catastrophe that claimed over 3,000 lives. Getting stuck on her way to the office was the only thing that saved her life. Otherwise, she would have been in her office on the 101st floor and couldn't have survived to talk about it.
This close-to-death experience helped Sarah Ferguson gain a new perspective on living one’s life, and we are sure that any of the survivors from the deadly 9/11 would say the same. Earlier this week, Ferguson spoke to Hello! in an inspiring interview and opened up about the lessons she took from that day.
She stressed the fact that the incident forced her to think about everything in a positive way and not to take the present moment for granted. Ferguson told the magazine, “I take every minute as a blessing, I really do, and I really work hard at it. Because the minute you look too far forward, then you're missing now."
Her charity for children, which office was on the North Tower before it collapsed, was formed for a young boy named P.J. who had suffered severe burns in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. As a mascot for her charity, Ferguson created a doll, called Little Red, which was found under the rubble of 9/11 attacks.
The little tiny ragdoll was thought to be of some child who might have gotten under the debris. Ferguson saw it being pulled out from the rubble as CNN presented it on television, and it was Larry King who clarified that the doll was “Little Red", a symbol of children’s rights all over the world.
Fergie and the two royal acquisitions
You might be wondering how Ferguson has got along with the two newest royal members: Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. As for the former, rumor had it that Sarah felt deeply upset because she was not invited to her wedding to Prince William, and this might have affected the relationship between them.
However, in an intimate and heartfelt interview on TV right after Middleton's wedding, the Duchess of York had nothing but good things to say about Kate, indicating she was beautiful and fabulous and looked very in love with Prince William. But with Meghan, the story was different. Fergie was invited to the ceremony and felt incredibly grateful, but did not receive an invitation to the evening reception at Frogmore House.
Previously, she made headlines while attending the royal wedding back in May of this year by going on record talking about how proud Diana would have been of her two daughters-in-law, Markle as well as Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William. "She [Diana] would hug them and tell them how well they're doing," she stated.
It seems that the life of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, has been a real roller coaster filled with heartbreaking, frightening, and joyful experiences, but without a doubt, it was so surprising to find out her anecdote about 9/11, don't you think?
