Prince Harry Is The Queen's Favorite And Here Is Why People Believe So
Parents are supposed to love their kids equally, but sometimes, a special bond develops between a parent and one child that everyone can see. This is the case of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry, who is not the direct heir to the British throne. Logic states that she should favor Prince William, but over the years, she has been captured laughing with her red-headed grandson. Here are the details.
The special bond
It was first speculated that the monarch adored Prince Harry over all her other grandchildren after a speech she gave in December 2017, where audiences saw a picture of him and his then-fiancée Meghan Markle in the background. There were other photographs like the Queen with her husband, Prince Philip, one of Prince Charles and Camilla and one of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
However, there was no image of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and her other grandchildren were nowhere to be seen either. This was certainly noticed by the public, especially considering that the prince had gotten engaged to an American actress, a profession that was probably frowned upon by all royalty.
The reason the monarch might not favor Prince William could be because he is the future king, and he has to have a more serious relationship with the current queen in order to be ready for the position in the future. Prince Harry is currently sixth in line to the throne, after the birth of Prince Louis bumped him down a spot, so it’s not likely that he will rule.
This has allowed for a closer and less strict bond with his grandmother, at least, that is what E! News royal correspondent Melanie Bromley states, and she adds that they were able to joke around more around each other because Prince Harry was not the direct heir. Bromley also revealed to News Corp Australia that:
“William is going to become king, so there has been a very close relationship between William and the Queen. It’s half family and half business. There are things that she’s teaching William that she also taught her son (Prince Charles) as far as the protocol and what’s expected of him. William is in a very different role (to Harry) ... he was born for this job.”
From the moment that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge started having children, it became even more clear that Prince Harry would never be king, so their relationship was a lot more relaxed as a result. Bromley also added that the red-headed prince enjoyed more liberties than his big brother, but both of them are very dear to their grandmother.
Their relationship was seen clearly during a promotional video for 2016’s Invictus Games, a sports competition created by Prince Harry as a charity for soldiers that were wounded in battle. The footage shows Queen Elizabeth II with the prince as they check out the guidebook, and Harry’s cell phone has a sassy video from U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife.
They were encouraging the English team to compete against them as if they could not hope to defeat them, but then, the Queen says, “Oh really? Please,” and Prince Harry makes the “drop the mic” gesture for the camera. The young man revealed to the BBC that shooting the footage was extremely fun and his grandmother had a great time as well.
His wife also revealed their bond
The Duchess of Sussex has also been witnessed of this unique relationship, “To be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her, I had such a deep understanding and, of course, incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. She’s an incredible woman.”
Despite popular belief, Markle was welcomed to the royal family with open arms, despite her profession, her nationality and the fact that she was common. This clearly states that Queen Elizabeth II approved of the relationship from the start, and royal protocol was even broken when Meghan attended the Christmas Day church service and dinner at Sandringham as just a fiancée.
The Queen’s birthday
Another example which evidences the Queen’s special love for Prince Harry was his humorous words during her 92nd birthday concert. He said, “Tonight we are celebrating The Queen’s birthday but Your Majesty, if you do not mind me saying, you are not someone who is easy to buy gifts for.” What do you buy someone who has all the money anyone would ever need?
Attended the royal wedding
Prince Charles wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles happened without much fanfare after years of scandal about their affair when he was married to Diana, but their eventual nuptials did not come as a surprise to anyone. However, the shocking part for some is that Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the ceremony. As the head of the Church of England, she could not.
According to The Telegraph, the Queen had to place “her role with the Church before her role as a mother”, and because both Charles and Camilla were divorcees, she could not be there for the wedding. She took pictures with the family later on that day for the rest of the festivities. However, Meghan Markle was also a divorcee before she married Prince Harry.
The fact that the Queen was willing to go to their wedding without the same reservations as she did for her son reveals that she is much more indulgent with her favorite grandchild than she is with her own firstborn. It would have been unfortunate if the monarch had to miss the biggest royal ceremony of 2018, but it’s great that she made an exception.
Do you think Prince Harry is indeed the Queen’s favorite? Is it reasonable that Prince William is treated differently? Why do you think she had no problem attending Meghan’s wedding?
