Things That We Found Out Only After Diana's Death
Princess Diana has always been an icon of interested in the eyes of the common folk. Everyone wants to know everything about her life, from her affairs to her struggles. Even though she passed away more than 20 years ago, she is still more famous, if that can be possible. Here we are going to look at some facts that came out after she was no longer on this Earth.
An outing with Freddie Mercury
Comedian Cleo Rocos describes in her book, ‘The Power of Positive Drinking’, a peculiar group of friends –Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury, Kenny Everett (British comedian) and the author– that plan to party in the London gay bar, Vauxhall Tavern. In order for Diana not to have any problems, she was dress as a man.
This allowed her to have the time of her life with the anonymity afforded by her disguised and in the company of Mercury. “She just wanted the thrill of going in, undetected, to order one drink and would then leave right away, she promised. By this point, she had tried on the outfit Kenny had intended to wear.”
Her life story was on videotape
It would seem that Diana herself recorded her biography on videotapes as a way of therapy. She had the help of voice coach Peter Settelen, who later sold those tapes to Britain’s Channel 4 when she died. In addition, author and journalist Andrew Morton wrote in ‘DIANA: Her True Story’ about how he felt when he first heard her voice.
“It was like being transported into a parallel universe, the Princess talking about her unhappiness, her sense of betrayal, her suicide attempts and two things I had never previously heard of bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder, and a woman called Camilla”
Discovering her tapes
Those recordings became known during a police raid of Paul Burrell, Diana’s butler. He was saving personal things of the Princess along with those tapes – stuff like clothing, photos, and letters– that added more than 300 objects. However, the Queen intervened to let Burrell off charges that arose after the raid as she had given him permission to take those items.
When details of the recordings were made public, Peter Settelen file a lawsuit to take back possession of the tapes. His arguments included that he believed he was the rightful owner. Ultimately, he won the case and the items in question were placed under his control. Later, he sold them to NBC in 2004.
Her affair with James Hewitt
After Diana’s death, the public knew of her various affairs. There was one with the playboy James Hewitt, which Ken Wharfe, her chief bodyguard, reported it. In his memoir ‘Diana: Closely Guarded Secret’, he wrote that the couple met in 1986 while in a party. “It was clear from the way she spoke that she adored the man, even after the affair had cooled.”
After Prince Harry’s birth, she became aware of her husband indiscretions with Camilla. These circumstances fueled her affair. She would go to her mother’s home in Devon with Hewitt and accompanied by her bodyguard Wharfe. Sadly, they ended their relationship because James was sent over to Germany; this choice was made after “the emotional pressures placed by Diana”.
Another affair – Barry Mannakee
She spoke timidly of her bodyguard, Barry Mannakee, in her recordings with Peter Settelen. She said, “I just, you know, wore my heart on my sleeve. I was only happy when he was around.” He mysteriously died on a motorcycle accident in 1987. She would also speak of her suspicions surrounding his death. She believed that the Royal family had him killed because of their affair.
Friendship with Elton John
She was good friends with singer Elton John. As normal in friendship, they had rough moments where they would be fighting. One of those moments was when Gianni Versace published ‘Rock and Royalty’. What happened was that some photos of the royal family were placed with pictures of some unclothed models, which made Diana concern of what the Queen would think.
This resulted in an argument that ended when Versace died later that year and Diana called John. John remembers how that happened “we reconciled then, and six weeks later, she’s dead”. This would be one twist of fate for their friendship. “I loved her because she did so much for AIDS and was a great friend to me.”
Why her sister and Prince Charles ended
It was public knowledge that Prince Charles dated her older sister Sarah before Diana. However, they ended their relationship because of some declarations made by Sarah to James Whitaker. “Sarah was disarmingly frank about her boyfriend and declared she would not marry Charles ‘if he were the dustman or the King of England.”
Diana tried suicide on one than more occasion
She attempted to take her own life on two opportunities. One was when she was in Balmoral because she was suffering from depression, bulimia, and knowing Charles’ affairs; she tried to slit her wrist with razor blades. Later she came back to London to seek help. The other one was when she was pregnant with William. She threw herself down the stairs in an attempt to get Charles’ attention. Something that did not work.
Her final words
Princess Diana had an unfortunate car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997. When firefighter Xavier Gourmelon was assisting her, she said, “My God, what’s happened?” He recounts how the car was a total mess and that he was the one that held her hand and tried to calm her. However, the next day, she died from complications, along with Dodi Fayed, and the driver, Herni Paul.
“To be honest I thought she would live. But I found out later she had died in the hospital. It was very upsetting” –Gourmelon said.
