Spider-Man: Far From Home: The Death Of a Fan-Favorite Is Heavily Implied
Marvel surprised us all with the release of the first trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. We are only a few months away from the premiere of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, so seeing more footage is exciting. Sadly, after fans took their time dissecting the teaser, they have come to the conclusion that a favorite character of ours did not survive the battle against Thanos. Let’s get into the details!
It comes after ‘Endgame’
The first thing everyone needs to remember is that ‘Far From Home’ will be set after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which makes releasing a trailer for the former a bit tricky if they want to keep all the secrets of the latter. This was confirmed by the Marvel Boss Kevin Feige during an interview with IGN:
“What is it like to try to go back to a normal life after what happens in this movie [Infinity War]? Not to mention what happens in the next [Avengers] movie. It’s fun to see that because he can represent, you know, the world as a whole, as they try to move forward. And you can do it in a way that is tonally unique, and tonally different than, certainly, the two Avengers films that people are about to see.”
What is the meaning of the clues?
Marvel needed to start promotions for that film, and although it could be taken as a standalone entry, the teaser lefts us with many clues. For many fans online, several of these hints meant that Tony Stark did not make it after ‘Endgame’. If this is true, while it’s not that surprising because Robert Downey Jr.’s contract expires after that film, it’s heartbreaking for every fan of the MCU.
The trailer shows Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, preparing for a school trip to Europe, where he meets Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, and they encounter Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. At first, it seems that Spider-Man and Mysterio are fighting towards the same mission, but after a while, Mysterio decides to do his own thing, becoming the renowned villain from the comics.
One person who is noticeably missing from this teaser is Tony Stark, who had become a part of Peter’s life after giving him the Spider-Man suit. Robert Downey Jr. cameoed in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, and he enlisted Spider-Man earlier during ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Therefore, his absence in this first look is alarming.
People took to social media to express their worry about Tony’s future after ‘Endgame’. One fan said: "To me, there are subtle hints about Tony dying and it feels like Nick Fury is there to recruit Spider-Man for [Fury's espionage/defense organization] S.H.I.E.L.D." Another person wrote: "Peter doesn't feel like he can be Spider-Man now that Tony Stark is dead..."
Another Twitter user wrote: "Spider-Man far from home trailer safe to say we know how 'Avengers: Endgame' will end now unfortunately since Peter Parker and Nick Fury are both in this trailer.” This person is technically right, of course, as we know that both Parker and Fury were turned to dust after Thanos snapped his fingers.
However, we have no way of knowing exactly how the remaining Avengers have accomplished to bring back those that were lost. Many theories have flown around the internet since ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ hit theaters and some say that Captain America will sacrifice himself in a way, while others state that Tony is the one who will give up his life.
Meanwhile, the Russo brothers are all for these theories because they have both stated that while the superheroes might save the day in the end, it will “come at a cost”. Therefore, there is a huge chance that Stark might not make it, and the clues in the ‘Far From Home’ trailer only accentuate that notion. One crucial hint was the big check Happy was carrying at some point.
It was signed by Pepper Potts, who we know is the CEO of Stark Industries, but it cannot be a coincidence that Tony’s signature was not the one used. Another moment that had fans wondering happened when Peter was packing for Europe, and he looked at the Spider-Man suit with a forlorn look on his face, as if it was painful to use it again.
There is also a scene in the Stark private plane where Happy tells Peter that he is “all alone”, and it’s also a really depressing moment, especially because Happy seems to want to comfort him although we know that he originally did not think much of the kid. It’s almost as if they bonded after going through something tragic.
A new theory
Meanwhile, other fans are looking at theories regarding this film in particular. One even said that Nick Fury is not really in the film, but that he is an illusion made by Mysterio, so Nick Fury might not have survived and who knows which heroes didn't either. It’s only speculation because the plot is not really known, although actor Jake Gyllenhaal talked about it a little at the CCXP panel.
"There are these threats to the world, the Elementals, elemental creatures. Mysterio is someone who knows about them and wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he's the only one who really understands them. Then he teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately has to make him become more than a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
Do you think Tony Stark might really be dead? It would be sad for the MCU because Iron Man started the whole franchise, but it’s important not to rush to conclusions because Marvel wants us on the edge of our seats until the premiere.
