What Only a Few Realize About Heimdall In 'Marvel's Epic Movie Sagas
Many fans of the MCU do not know much about Heimdall. While he has appeared in all ‘Thor’ movies, some of his impressive powers have not shown up. We will be exploring some details about this character that some people have not realized, and a possible plot hole for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Let’s get to it!
Not the best films in the MCU
While Thor is perhaps a fan-favorite hero in Marvel, it’s not surprising that most people don’t think much of ‘Thor’ and ‘Thor: The Dark World’. Even actor Idris Elba, who plays Heimdall, feels that same way. He has also revealed that he would like to play a real superhero with a significant role in an MCU movie, or perhaps that Heimdall had more presence in these stories.
However, Thanos killed Heimdall in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, so we might not get to see more of Thor’s best friend and the keeper of the Bifrost. Elba also said that he did not have fun filming the first films in the Thor story and that it wasn’t until ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ that he could finally enjoy himself. The actor says that it was because of director Taika Waititi, who also played the role of the rock champion Korg.
Elba said that the first movies felt like real work, but ‘Ragnarok’ was an incredible experience for the cast thanks to Waititi. Additionally, while Heimdall is an essential character in the Marvel Universe, he is not shown up much in the MCU as they keep him in the background only as a supporting character, and they don’t explain how special he can be.
Asgardians are definitely more powerful than humans, but Heimdall goes beyond that. Furthermore, his sword is made out of Uru metal just like Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. While the blade is mostly used to open the Bifrost in the MCU, it is also a powerful weapon that can slice almost anything. The name of the sword is Hofund, and it was enchanted by Odin himself to achieve some impressive feats.
As we learned in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, not everyone can handle a weapon made from Uru, so that already categorizes Heimdall as an amazing being. However, that’s not the only thing this Asgardian has in his arsenal. No simple person would be able to guard the Bifrost, and Heimdall can see anything and everything that happens in the Nine Realms.
During ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, Heimdall was able to see all the way to Sakaar, which is revealed to be very far away from Asgard, and he also let Thor used his vision to see what was going on in their city while Hela invaded. He can sense beings coming from miles away, so it’s tough for anyone to sneak up on this man.
However, his insight could be intercepted with powerful magic, and if his eyes suffer damage, he could also be left without his abilities. Heimdall has control over his vision because it would be too overwhelming to see everything at all times, so he can block some of his senses, which seems to be what happened in ‘Infinity War’, otherwise it’s a major plot hole.
The Infinity Stones
Some theories state that the gems are the one responsible for everything that has happened as if they have a conscience of their own. It’s known that Asgard has a history with the jewels, and Odin even possessed the Space Stone for a long time. Some fans also believe that he had them all at some point, and that’s why Hela found a fake Infinity Gauntlet in his vault during ‘Ragnarok’.
Asgard sent the Reality Stone to the Collector, so at least, it's confirmed that they had two at some point in time. Before ‘Infinity War’, some people thought that Heimdall’s power came from the Soul Stone, as it was the only powerful gem that had not appeared yet in the MCU. Now, we know that it was hidden in Vormir and requires a considerable sacrifice to obtain.
The plot hole
So, while we know that Heimdall can just block his powers to an extent, it’s odd to think that he wouldn’t be using them after what happened to Asgard when Hela came back. Why didn’t he see the Black Order’s spaceship? If he doesn’t know about Thanos, he can use his sense to discern if danger is coming, right?
On the other hand, there is Loki, who invaded Earth on behalf of the Mad Titan with the Chitauri to obtain the Space Stone. Therefore, the God of Mischief knows that Thanos might be coming for that powerful gem. He is also a character that has proven to be two steps ahead of everyone. Loki could have warned Heimdall to keep a lookout for Thanos.
Therefore, it’s just weird that everyone was so surprised by the appearance of the Mad Titan. At the beginning of the film, he did not have all the stones, so it’s just weird that Heimdall could not sense him coming, as Thanos had no magic to stop his abilities. Another odd occurrence is the fact that right before he died, he sent just Hulk to Earth.
Why not send someone else too? Loki could have gone to Earth, especially if he had the Tesseract in his possession. It would have kept the Space Stone out of Thanos’ hands for a bit longer. Additionally, why didn’t he send Thor to Earth? Thor could potentially survive anything that the Mad Titan did, but still protecting his best friend should have been a priority.
On the other, it seems that using magic comes at a price. In ‘Doctor Strange’, we learned that the Ancient One could only do certain things because she was tapping into the Dark Dimension, and in ‘Thor’, we learned that Odin’s power keeps Asgard thriving, but he needs to take the Odin Sleep every once in a while.
Heimdall suffers from something similar. In that scene, he said, “Old fathers, let the dark magic flow through me one last time,” and it’s not the first time we have heard the words “dark magic” before in regards to his powers. Loki revealed in ‘The Avengers’ that someone could tamper with the Bifrost using mystical powers.
In the comics, Odin can send Thor back to Earth using the dark magic but it takes so much of Odin’s powers, and Thor suffers incredible pain going through the Bifrost. So, maybe Heimdalls was using this odd method, and the Hulk was the only one who could withstand it at that point. It would explain why Bruce Banner came back when he landed on Earth.
It’s also speculated that the dark magic might be the reason why Hulk would not come out in ‘Infinity War’. Furthermore, Heimdall could have chosen to send Hulk back because he sensed that the future needed him in the coming fight. Bruce warned everyone that Thanos was coming, but just like Doctor Strange did, Heimdall might have seen something we don’t know about yet.
Do you think there was a plot hole in the movie? Could Heimdall have warned everyone before Thanos obtained the Space Stone or even before he got the Power Stone? We hope some of these questions are answered in ‘Endgame’. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who love to theorize about the MCU. See you next time!
