9 Things That Hint At Daenerys' Sad Fate In 'Game of Thrones"

Aside from Jon Snow, the best character in ‘Game of Thrones’ is definitely Daenerys Targaryen, and most fans want to see her on the Iron Throne. However, it’s not a secret that HBO and George R.R. Martin are cruel to the fan-favorite people, so it is very likely that the Mother of Dragons could die in the eighth and final season. There are several reasons why this might happen, so let’s get to them in more detail.

1. What she saw in the House of the Undying

The show has given away clues that could indicate Daenerys’ destiny, and one happened in the season two finale which was titled ‘Valar Morghulis’, and that’s a commonly used phrase that means “All Men Must Die”. The Mother of Dragons had a vision when she was inside the House of the Undying in Qarth where she walked in a decimated version of the Great Hall at King’s Landing.

There was snow, which is uncommon for the capital city of Westeros, and when she was about to touch the Iron Throne, she could hear dragons, so she followed the sound instead. Dany, then, reunites with Khal Drogo and their son Rhaego. Some believe that this means that her dragons might stop her from sitting on the coveted throne, and if she does not end up in the throne, it's because she is dead, finally joining her lover and son.

2. Tyrion has talked too much about succession

Tyrion Lannister is also a fan-favorite character, so it was amazing for fans to see him with Daenerys in her quest, but just before Dany went to help Jon in the season seven episode ‘Beyond the Wall’, he told her that she needed to name a successor. Many expect that Jon will finally get her pregnant, so that could mean a child, but it also emphasizes that while Dany is powerful, she could die.

Of course, she was not happy with Tyrion about this reminder, and said, “You want to know who sits on the Iron Throne after I'm dead. Is that it?" That seems like the show is giving hints that Dany might be able to sit on the throne, but it could be short-lived. On the other hand, it could also mean that she doesn't take the crown at all.

3. Her Dragons can die too

That episode was tragic for all the fans that saw the dragons grow from babies to the massive creatures that can scorch anything in sight. ‘Beyond The Wall’ showed Jon and others trying to capture a wight for their meeting with Cersei Lannister so that they could finally make people understand that the threat from the North is real.

Unfortunately, the Night King killed one of Dany’s dragons, Viserion, and then revived it for himself. It has been implied that the Mother of Dragon’s life is intricately connected to that of her creatures, and that scene could be foreshadowing that the Night King will be the one to kill Daenerys in the upcoming season.

4. The Azor Ahai prophecy

In ‘Stormborn’, Missandei revealed that the prophecy about the Prince That Was Promised could actually be about a female or a male, unlike the priestess Melisandre believed for so long. She now thinks that both Jon and Daenerys have a big role in the “bringing of the dawn”, but we cannot trust the things this woman believes, as she was very wrong before. But, she also said once, “Prophecies are dangerous things". Dany could be part of this fate.

5. The Mad Queen

The Targaryen’s rule over Westeros ended during Robert’s rebellion after Lyanna Stark was kidnapped, and then, Jaime Lannister killed King Aerys II, the Mad King, earning the nickname of “Kingslayer”, but the main reason he was known as "mad" was that the King had gone insane. In the episode ‘Eastwatch’, Lord Varys talked about Dany’s similarities to her father after she killed Randyll and Dickon Tarly.

Tyrion did not agree with him, stating, "Daenerys is not her father." However, if she did inherit some of the old king’s crazy ways, then she could be known as “the Mad Queen”, turning into a tyrannical leader who could face an uprising from the people just like her father did years ago. However, the current “Mad Queen” seems to be Cersei.

6. Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa

While the HBO series does not mention Azor Ahai that much, it’s a massive part of the novels. Therefore, many theories have been created about how they will show it in ‘GoT’. Many believe that Jon Snow is the new Azor Ahai. He was the original savior of Westeros from the first time the White Walkers attacked. He wielded Lightbringer, and the prophecy says that he is back to do it once more.

However, if Jon is truly Azor Ahai, his relationship with Daenerys takes a whole new meaning, because he had to stab his wife Nissa with Lightbringer to complete it. Therefore, it’s likely that this will happen again, and Jon will have to kill her to save Westeros. This will be the kind of tragic narrative that ‘Game of Thrones’ is so fond of.

7. The Targaryens

After the death of Aerys II, the Targaryen line has been on the brink of extinction, and even Dany told Jon in the episode ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’ that her whole family was dead. Of course, they have yet to discover that Jon is a Targaryen too, but aside from that, this could be an indication that Daenerys won’t survive either.

8. What Mirri Maz Duur said

Mirri Maz Duur is the witch responsible for Khal Drogo’s death, and after Dany woke up to discover her son died too, Mirri said, “I warned you that only death can pay for life. You knew the price.” Those words are why Dany thinks that she cannot have children. However, most fans believe that she will get pregnant with Jon’s baby, but if you follow what the witch said, then someone might have to die for Dany to deliver a live child.

9. Jon and Dany’s mothers suffered the same fate

Now, if you believe that Dany will get pregnant, then she is in trouble considering that her own mother, Rhaella Targaryen, died in childbirth. Meanwhile, Lyanna Stark also died giving birth to Jon. Of course, that would be an anticlimactic death for Daenerys, but it could happen. A happy ending does not seem plausible.

Do you think Daenerys will survive season eight? Will Westeros be able to defeat the White Walkers so that we can finally learn who will sit on the Iron Throne? This story has been such a rollercoaster that we hope the final ride is just as wondrous. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cannot wait for April. See you next time!
