Better Call Saul Could Be The Set-Up For The Breaking Bad Movie And Bryan Cranston Has High Hopes
Many fans mourned after the end of ‘Breaking Bad’ in 2013, as it was one of the best AMC series ever created, but apparently, the network is looking to expand into films. There are already plans to make ‘The Walking Dead’ movies, so it makes sense that Vince Gilligan’s groundbreaking story is in the works as well. Not much is known about the plot, and but here are all the details already out there.
AARON PAUL WILL BE BACK
According to many reports, Aaron Paul will be back to play the role of Jesse Pinkman as the actor has already signed on. This is particularly interesting because Vince Gilligan originally planned to have Jesse killed in the first season of ‘Breaking Bad’, but both the crew and the audience loved Paul so much that they changed their minds.
Pinkman eventually became the show’s moral compass, although not exactly a good one. However, fans would not accept to have a movie without one of the main characters, and when news about the film first came out, Aaron Paul was already on board. It’s said that thanks to him, other relevant actors signed on too.
A SEQUEL TO ‘BREAKING BAD’
Even though the plot is still a mystery, one of the main things to know is that it will be set right after the events of the show, especially regarding what Jesse got up to after he ran away from Uncle Jack’s gang. Fans have theorized about this for five years, so everyone should be excited to see what Vince Gilligan comes up with this time around.
A popular notion is that Pinkman found Brock, the son of his former girlfriend Andrea, who died in season five, but AMC and Gilligan have not revealed more details about this to the media. No matter what the creators decide, the project could be very successful if it stays true to the original feel of the series.
OTHER CHARACTERS ARE BE BACK TOO
Aside from Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, there have been reports that many other ‘Breaking Bad’ favorites have signed on. Actors like Bryan Cranston, Krysten Ritter, Jonathan Banks, Jesse Plemons, Charles Baker, Matt Jones, Robert Forster, and others. Some characters died at different moments of the narrative, like Walter White, Jane and Mike Ehrmantraut, but it’s expected that the showrunners might jump around in the timeline, as it has been done in ‘Better Call Saul’.
THERE IS NO SET TITLE FOR THE PROJECT JUST YET
At the time of this writing, the film does not have an official title, but it is being called ‘Greenbrier’, which, according to the dictionary, means: “a green-stemmed North American vine of the lily family”. Therefore, fans have started to speculate how that plant might be related to the plot of the movie.
However, it’s important not to get into these theories so much because sometimes working titles are just random words designed to confuse people. On the other hand, the definition of “Greenbrier” definitely brings to mind the lily of the valley, and that could play out importantly in the film.
VINCE GILLIGAN IS IN CHARGE ONCE AGAIN
One of the most important things about rebooting a show or making a movie about it is staying true to the original work. Luckily, fans can rest assured that Vince Gilligan is handling the project this time around too, and he is not only writing the script but also directing the film. He has enough experience after being credited in many different aspects of ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ that no one is worried. He is the person best suited to drive this franchise on.
NO TRAILER YET
The movie started shooting scenes in the fall of 2018, but there was never any official statement from the network. However, it makes sense that there is no trailer yet because production just started a few months ago. Marketing should begin after all the scenes have been shot, and they are in post-production. AMC will surely want their fans to be hyped for the movie.
IS IT A SPIN-OFF FOR ‘BETTER CALL SAUL’?
The movie’s logline says that it will show “the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom”, which refers to what happened to Jesse Pinkman after the series finale titled ‘Felina’. Furthermore, it could be a spin-off for ‘Better Call Saul’, and several characters from the original show could appear, though only one has appeared in the world after ‘Breaking Bad’: Gene.
The story of the man formerly known as Saul Goodman, who also used to be known as Jimmy McGill, has given glimpses into what happens in the world post-‘Breaking Bad’, and the man is now hiding as Cinnabon manager in Nebraska after running away from Albuquerque could be setting up for the movie AMC is preparing.
Gene is in Omaha, but he cannot run away from his past for long, and the season four finale gave us a scene with a taxi driver that scared him. People might have noticed that the car had an Albuquerque air freshener. It would not be hard to mix both worlds going forward and how Gene’s former lives as Jimmy and Saul could come back to bite him.
Since it is expected that the film will pick up where ‘Breaking Bad’ ended, there could be many nods to the show. The death of Walter White should also be an essential plot point, and if Gene is avoiding whoever is after him, he could find out new things along the way to set for the movie. There may not be a prominent piece of information, especially knowing how Vince Gilligan thinks, but fans should expect subtle hints.
It would be way too much to expect appearances from the favorite characters, but Jesse clearly needs legal help after his escape and being part of the drug world. He could call his former lawyer if he becomes desperate enough or it could be done in a less obvious way with Gene discovering things about Jesse later on.
However, Vince Gilligan has avoided unimportant connections for the sake of both shows, and even though many are speculating that ‘Better Call Saul’ could set up for the ‘Breaking Bad’ film, fans should not count on it unless it is relevant for both stories and doesn’t comprise either of them. While both series are different, they are related enough as they take place in the same universe. Gilligan has even suggested that Aaron Paul could appear in ‘Better Call Saul’ too.
