We Look Into Prince George's Obsession With Shorts

For a very long time, the British Royal Family has been in the spotlight, and everything started since Lady Di passed away in 1997. More recently, we had the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and the imminent arrival of their firstborn. And that is without counting the myriad news about the Royal Fab Four.

Now, another royal member has been by word of mouth: Prince George, who is the third one in line to the throne. But apart from his school life and childhood, have you ever wondered why he always wears shorts? There is an interesting explanation for that, and today we'll shed some light on this matter plus many more details.

THE QUIRKS AROUND HIS FASHION CHOICE

The five-year-old Prince is not a stranger to the public eye. On the contrary, the whole world follows closely every step of this little one in the royal family. After all, he is one of the heirs to the British throne and a cute fashion influencer at such a young age.

You don't need to have eagle eyes to detect something particular in the way Prince George dresses. In his multiple appearances and official pictures, like the time he visited his mom at the hospital when she was giving birth to baby Louis, there is one item of clothing that you'll never spot him without: his shorts.

WHAT ABOUT THE SHORTS?

If there is a piece of clothing that remains consistent in the wardrobe of this little boy with blond locks and chubby cheeks are shorts. Also called "short pants," George is always seen with a pair to match his tucked-in polo shirts, knee-high socks, and fashionable shoes.

Now the one-million-dollar question to this fashion selection is, why the shorts? England is not known for having warm weather, and he keeps on wearing shorts even if it is cold outside. The answer, in a nutshell, is history, and some royal experts can help us shed some light on this matter.

LOOKING INTO HISTORY

During a conversation with Harper's Bazaar, William Hanson, an expert in royal etiquette, explained that "it's a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts." The Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood’s website gave a bit of history stating that the concept dated back to the 16th century and maintained until the early 20th.

In that time, young boys in the UK even wore gowns during their first years of life without any difference from their female siblings. Following that stage, they would start wearing shorts at the age of four until the age of eight when they graduated to full-length pants. It was also possible to hold a formal ceremony to celebrate the boy's transition from babyhood to boyhood.

However, the museum added that these periods varied between families and eras. Now that we are in the 21st century, aristocracy still upholds this old-school mark as part of family tradition, and that unquestionably includes the British Royal Family.

NOT DOING SO...

What would people think of the Royals if they didn't put shorts on George? A royal commentator told People, "it is considered very suburban for a little boy to be in long trousers when he is just a little boy." William Hanson also told a similar remark to Harper's Bazaar:

"Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on younger boys are one of the silent class markers that we have in England. Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class-quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban."

DOES HE EVER WEAR PANTS?

We might all agree that nobody wants the future King of England looking suburban, so we guess Prince George will never ever wear pants until he's eight. Well, not exactly! Last year, there were some exceptions, and Harper's Bazaar gave the details. As the source commented, the little Prince had his pants debut in May 2018.

For the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, George, along with the three other page boys, was spotted with miniature versions of the frock coat and pants of the Blues and Royals that the groom and his big bro donned that day. Savile Row tailors Dege & Skinner custom-made the little outfits.

Editor-in-Chief of Majesty magazine Ingrid Seward also told People that due to England's cold weather, it is very likely that George does wear pants in the intimacy of his home, so it is doubtful he would ever be photographed with them.

However, she added, “It is absolutely impossible to have a private life if you are a member of the royal family. There is no such thing." And we cannot forget the Christmas card picture of the family last year where George appeared wearing jeans. The reason for this decision is unknown, but it seems it was because of the family and intimate context of the photo as the Duchess also appears wearing jeans.

IF SHORTS ARE FOR BOYS, WHAT DO GIRLS WEAR?

If there is a tradition dictating boys' clothing, there must be certainly one for girls, and that is when we get to George's little sister, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. Despite her young age, Charlotte has also been a topic of discussion among Brits and the press, not only for her undeniable beauty but also for her style.

Lately, her style choices have caused commotion worldwide. According to experts in fashion with eagle eyes to detect every movement in the Royal Family, Charlotte wears similar dresses every time she is seen in public. So the one-million-dollar question is: Why does her mother choose similar clothes? Several news websites tried to figure out the answer. Is it a tradition as well?

POSSIBLE REASON #1

According to designer Rachel Riley with Daily Mail, apparently, the Duchess of Cambridge is using the strategy of selecting classical and “timeless” clothing, without taking much into account trends. The fashion expert Holly Peacock went beyond and said that it could be a way of diverting attention from the little one.

Any time the three-year-old goes out with mom or dad, a swarm of fans capture her in photos and exhibit them on social media, which generates millions of comments around the world. Being a princess, despite the age, certainly makes her stand out from the crowd. Thus, her parents want to limit the attention she gets, and her looks is a way of achieving this.

POSSIBLE REASON #2

Additionally, the protective mother may not want her baby girl to be the creator of trends every time she goes public. Kate Middleton knows that for sure, because in two occasions that Charlotte was seen, she was wearing Zara dresses, and that caused that the brand’s pieces of clothing were sold out in a couple of hours.

Moms worldwide want their girls to wear the same shoes and dresses as the Princess, and that is why they try to copy her the best they can. The fourth one in line to the throne is such an influencer that her impact on the fashion industry is notorious, and it even has a name: Charlotte Effect.

It is forecasted that the young Princess will stimulate the British economy up to $5,000 million throughout her life, making it grow substantially and causing a higher cash flow in the United Kingdom. Kate is very aware of this, and that is why she tries to leverage it wisely.

POSSIBLE REASON #3

Being a royal is not always a fairy tale. It carries a lot of prohibitions and protocols that need to be respected and followed strictly. They are told what to eat, what to play and even what to wear. We've already said that Prince George can only wear shorts in public, and it's known royal women have to wear nude stockings all the time.

So Princess Charlotte is not an exception to the rule, and that is why she has specific regulations to obey regarding her closet. According to royal protocol experts, it is known that the offspring’s clothing is chosen exclusively by their mothers. However, they are not as free as other progenitors can be.

The dresses and the models the kids wear need an exact logic that does not clash with other elements. So the Duchess of Cambridge needs to be very smart when getting her little ones dressed. She has to consider the type of event they are attending, adults’ clothing, and other outfits she already has.

The little Princess is dressed up in a way that does not mismatch with her parent’s style; thus, every piece is carefully selected. Additionally, it has to be an attire that does not stand out, and that is why certain items help a lot. Simplicity reigns over extravaganza.

That is the reason why she wears only knee-high dresses in neutral colors like different shades of blue, pink, and red. The pieces always have sleeves, baby or Peter Pan collar, and subtle details around the waist like small flowers or bows.

POSSIBLE REASON #4

Her mother wants to avoid a commotion among designers, and that is why she usually picks British ones. Instead of Gucci or Balenciaga, it is more likely to find Charlotte wearing something from Amaia Kids, a children’s fashion store in Chelsea.

Another common choice is Doña Carmen, the Spanish shoemaker. She also wears clothes from well-known brands in the fashion industry like Zara, or the Spanish brand M&H. Her wardrobe is not very diverse, and it is far away from the fairy tale princesses’ one, but it is all for the sake of respecting family traditions and being discrete.

POSSIBLE REASON #5

Middleton wants to show the world that royals are like the rest of the people, and that is why she tends to use the same dress more than once, even for official pictures. She does not live with this celeb diva attitude of throwing away clothes because she has already been photographed with it, and she wants to transmit that to her girl.

POSSIBLE REASON #6

Charlotte is a princess, and hence, her image needs to be protected from an early age. The public talks about any member of the royal family and is ready to criticize even the little and innocent ones. For that reason, her parents do not want her looks to be a motive of bad comments every time she leaves the palace.

Children fashion guru Suzanne Peters indicated that maybe the Duchess wants to instill the public to look at her children and their smiles instead of just thinking about the brand they are wearing. "These kids are public figures and have formal occasions to attend; hence, they need proper clothes that won't cause negative press exposure."

POSSIBLE REASON #7

The Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge might be trying to connect the little girl to her past through her clothes. Looking back in royal history, we can see that many other female royals, like Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, wore dresses that are similar to Charlotte’s.

However, it does not exist an official dressing code that prohibits princesses to wear pants, but dresses are merely the preferred clothing considering her young age and her royal status. In some way, she is getting to understand and respect her background.

Now it is easier to comprehend why royal kids keep it traditional and simple when it comes to their clothing with all the aspects and traditions they need to consider.
