Kevin Feige Finally Confirms Sought-After X-Men News and It's Risky Business For Marvel
Fans have been waiting for the X-Men to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception, and it has been revealed that Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, is overseeing the move himself. However, this also means a new Wolverine might be chosen, and there is no guarantee that the X-Men films under the Disney banner will be any good. Let’s discuss this further.
A NEW X-MEN TEAM
Producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who worked with Feige for some time, has complete confidence in Feige’s choices. Regarding Wolverine’s replacement, she said, “That would be between Fox and Disney. Obviously, Kevin and I started the first one. He worked for me. He’s got a great story sense. He’s got a great ability to weave each world and weave those worlds together. I trust him and I trust that he will take care of the X-Men.”
Meanwhile, ‘Dark Phoenix’ and ‘The New Mutants’ will still be released under 20th Century Fox, but after that, everyone will have to get thinking at Marvel Studios. The X-Men franchise, the term “mutant” and other characters are moving to Disney after their deal is complete. The rights to them were originally sold off in the 90s because Marvel Comics needed the money desperately.
However, Marvel Studios and Disney have managed to build a franchise that is worth billions of dollars and has set new cinematic records. Therefore, it’s only logical that the mutants should be part of that amazing saga. One of the reasons why Feige is getting seriously involved in this new phase of Marvel is the need to replace Wolverine, arguably the most famous X-Men.
Actor Hugh Jackman, who gave Logan life for many years, has unwaveringly said that ‘Logan’ was his last appearance as the X-Men. However, Donner talked about having him back at some point for an older looking Wolverine. "[Jackman] worked so hard to bulk up, would get up at four in the morning to bulk and eat protein meals every two hours because his natural state, they used to call him Worm when he was a kid.”
"So his natural state is a very skinny guy. Once you reach a certain age, the body just won’t go anymore. I think he was wise to say, ‘I’m at that point. I can’t do it.’ Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t come back as older Wolverine. You never know. Future Wolverine, you never know.”
Some fan theories state that the X-Men or one new character might make an appearance in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, but it’s still a bit too early. It is way more likely that they will start appearing in Phase Four of the MCU, although no one can know right now when that will happen or how they will be introduced into the franchise.
“I don’t know what Kevin’s thinking honestly. I don’t even think Kevin knows. I think Kevin’s still dealing with this wealth of characters and trying to make sense of them... This is all now in Disney’s playground and they get to decide. At least we know it’s in good hands. Everybody’s worked really hard up to now on the Fox side but now it’s going to be Disney’s call,” commented Donner.
A NEW ERA FOR THE MCU
This is a dream for Marvel fans, as no one expected it to happen. The X-Men are such an integral part of the comic books that it was sad seeing some story arcs in the MCU without them, but now, things will change. The Disney-Fox merger will be finalized soon, and Phase Four could be the best one in this franchise’s history.
That is what most people hope for, but there are no guarantees in this world, and it might be hard for the studio to integrate the mutants into their fold. Of course, there are benefits like the fact that Fox changed the timelines constantly as well as the cast in addition to a world that was only different for the presence of these special beings. However, a new studio might create new problems.
Filmmakers are not perfect, and while the most recent X-Men films were not that popular, the first one released in 2000 was a gem that ignited the fire of superhero movies. They tackled over issues of prejudice against different people and showed impressive technology in addition to superpowers. Marvel needs to find a way to integrate the team without repeating those storylines.
When they choose a new set of actors, although the old ones will be missed, they need to make their story as different and interesting as they can for their fans. It is not an easy task, considering MCU movies have never mentioned the existence of X-Men, but it’s not impossible. Furthermore, Marvel has remained too secretive about Phase Four.
This could mean that a retcon or something to that end might be in the works. Adding mutants to a world already filled with superheroes could be the perfect way to introduce Professor X as he recruits new students for his academy. He could also travel all over the world for this mission and add much-needed diversity to Marvel while incorporating everything fans love about X-Men.
Unfortunately, while they can choose new actors, the characters are still the same. There are many, but the most important heroes and villains have been used by Fox’s films and television shows. Some secondary characters could bring new life to X-Men stories, but most fans are expecting the major players in that franchise.
No matter how many times the story is rebooted, they all want to see Professor X, Magneto, Wolverine, Mystique, among others. Jackman has been Wolverine for the past 17 years, and he is loved by everyone. Some people might wonder if the X-Men could survive without Wolverine, but the more pressing question is if Wolverine could continue without the actor.
Wolverine could continue, especially if they make him like the comic book hero of the 70s. A new team does not need Wolverine to be hot in order to succeed. Other characters could benefit from adding a new face like Storm, who could finally be tall and act like a true leader. Rogue’s story could be explained in detail, even if she doesn’t meet Captain Marvel.
The MCU could also fix all those special effects flaws that people did not like about Fox’s X-Men. On the other hand, some characters have already been used so much in past stories that it might be better to leave them off the new films. Unfortunately, some might never be better than what Fox did. For example, no one will ever top Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier.
There are many themes to explore aside from the outcast trope and discrimination. X-Factor, a team that pretended to hunt new mutants in order to protect them, could also come into play. A couple of movies could be made with them in mind. Moreover, Excalibur could also be included in the future. Fans might have to wait a while to see what Marvel Studios has in store for the mutants.
Luckily, ‘Captain Marvel’ will be gracing the big screen soon. The film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and the script was handled by Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Brie Larson will portray the role of Carol Danvers while Samuel L. Jackson is back as Nick Fury. Jude Law is Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg is back as Phil Coulson, and Lee Pace will be Ronan the Accuser.
Do you think the X-Men should be rebooted completely? How will they fare in the MCU? Do you think they might join some of the Avengers for future missions? If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cannot wait to see the mutants under Disney. See you next time!
