8 Ways Iron Man Is Exactly Like Thanos And Doesn't Even Know It (Yet)
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man has been the central superhero of the MCU for more than 10 years. Therefore, it was not surprising that he became the leader of the Avengers. ‘Infinity War’ was the biggest cinematic crossover in history, and although there were other characters, Tony Stark’s fight against Thanos felt much more important than everything. The reason is that he and the Mad Titan share several qualities. Here are the details.
1. TRYING TO BE THE HERO ALL THE TIME
Being a superhero would give anyone a complex, but somehow, Tony feels more responsible than the rest of the Avengers when something tragic happens in the world. While Captain America and the rest of the characters join forces to solve any problem as a team, Iron Man likes to do things on his own, believing that he is the one who should be saving them all; even the other superheroes.
That is why he created Ultron in the first place. He wanted something to save the world and did not talk about it with the Avengers because he knew better than them. Thanos also believes himself the savior the universe has been clamoring for, and he is not willing to listen to anyone else’s opinion. Apparently, these two think that their knowledge and wisdom gives them more responsibilities.
2. THEY WILL MESS WITH DANGEROUS TECHNOLOGY NO MATTER HOW HARMFUL IT MIGHT BE FOR THEM
Tony has put his life on the line since the first ‘Iron Man’ and has suffered countless injuries since then, especially due to the Iron Man armor. He was even willing to place a source of energy on his chest to save himself, so at any moment, one of his new suits could actually harm him permanently. His life does not seem to matter as much as his missions.
The Mad Titan is willing to do anything to get the Infinity Stones, although no one had managed to do this before and there was no telling how they would react when joined together. The person wielding was also in danger because, as Thor said, mortals cannot handle the objects made on Nidavellir. He risked everything, including family and friends, for his own goal.
3. NO ONE ELSE’S OPINIONS MATTER
One of the main issues for the Avengers was always a rivalry between Captain America and Tony Stark, although it was due to their differing opinions more than anything else. However, important members of the team sided with Steve when he refused to sign the Sokovia Accords, and Tony would not budge which led to their civil war. He does not change his mind.
Thanos is much the same in this matter because his method is the only way possible, according to him. Many told him to save the universe some other way, like Gamora, who got killed in the Mad Titan’s mission. Most would even say that he is more determined than Iron Man and is a lot less likely to change his point of view.
4. THERE IS ONE PERSON THEY LOVE OVER OTHERS
While Tony Stark started the MCU as a playboy who never followed the rules, he later fell in love with Pepper Potts. Tony is someone else when he is with her, and his arrogant façade fades away in her presence or when she calls him out on it. Pepper is also able to direct Tony into certain important decisions and has been known to change his mind a few times.
In Thanos’ case, while he claimed to love all of his children, the Black Order, he held true love for Gamora. She was always his favorite, and it was strange for most fans to see a villain that was not purely evil. Unfortunately, he is so stubborn on his path to obtain the stones that he killed Gamora, but he did shed a tear, and it might have been a first for the Mad Titan.
5. THEY HAVE AN EXCUSE FOR THEIR BAD DECISIONS: THE GREATER GOOD
No matter what Tony did in the past like creating technology that got out of his hands, weapons that could the destroy the Earth or even causing a rift between the Avengers, he has always been able to rationalize those decisions. The billionaire thinks that everything he has ever done is for the sake of the world, or his friends, or his loved ones.
Thanos believes that his mission will save the universe from itself. There are a finite number of resources and therefore, half the beings in all galaxies have to be wiped out. He truly believes that the goal justifies the means and that his way is the most human as it would involve no bloodshed or pain for those that disappear.
6. THEY WANT PEACE
Tony’s methods might not be the most understandable at times, but he has gone through several traumatic things in life that made believe in forcing people into peace, even using shady approaches. In ‘Iron Man’, he said, “Peace means holding the bigger stick,” which means that the most powerful person gets to broker peace.
Thanos believes that a few lives don’t matter if you look at the bigger picture. It does not seem like he wants power or accolades for his actions, but rather, he wants his goal achieved even if it goes against all the laws of nature. To him, if half of the population disappears it means that the other half gets to live peacefully and happily.
7. NO SURRENDER
Determination is one of the reasons why Tony is so successful. It takes a lot to build a billion-dollar business, be an Avenger and still work on the technology for the Iron Man armors. When he gets his mind on something, nothing can stop him. For example, the time he went to space with the nuclear warhead to stop enemies, although he did not know if he would live through it.
Likewise, Thanos never showed reluctance concerning his difficult mission, only perseverance throughout ‘Infinity War’. All the superheroes of the MCU could not convince or fight him into giving up his destructive goal. He did everything he planned to despite the hardships and the heartache of losing Gamora and Ebony Maw.
8. THEY HAVE TURNED TO VIOLENCE
Despite his fights scenes, Thanos was mostly calm throughout the entire film, and he talked to people in a gracious manner. He never raised his voice, and he comforted the Scarlet Witch when he killed Vision. He was willing to let his foes walk away without a problem as long as they did not interfere with his plans.
During ‘Civil War’, Tony battled against Bucky and Steve because he had just found out about his parent’s deaths. However, he held back during his confrontation with Cap because he did not want to hurt him. Iron Man is used as a weapon to protect the Earth, but if arms can be avoided than Tony would opt for that option.
