George Clooney on Meghan Markle's Story Similarity to Lady D.: "We've seen how it ends"
Anyone who keeps up with the royal family knows that Meghan Markle and even Kate Middleton have been the victims of malicious comments online and media outlets. Actor George Clooney has come to the American Duchess’ defense, stating that history is repeating itself because it happened to Princess Diana. Let's look into some details.
A CONFIDANT HAS COME TO THE RESCUE
It might surprise some people, but actor George Clooney has recently spoken up about the things being said about Meghan online. He compared her plight to that of her husband’s mother, which ended in the most tragic way possible. The actor and his wife Amal, great friends of Prince Harry and Meghan, attended their wedding in May 2018.
It’s said that the four of them enjoyed their time together at Clooney’s villa located in Lake Como, Italy. In an interview, Clooney said, “I do want to say, they're just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she's been pursued and vilified. She's a woman who is seven months pregnant, and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself.”
"We've seen how that ends. I can't tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she's getting a raw deal there and I think it's irresponsible and I'm surprised by that." There is still no word from Clooney’s publicist regarding the actor’s comments, but he was talking about a letter that Meghan wrote to her father, which he decided to make public.
The Duchess wrote that her father had hurt her terribly, breaking her heart “into a million pieces”, and reproached him for creating “such unnecessary and unwarranted pain”. Furthermore, the actress also faulted him for not calling her about his decision not to attend her wedding and making it such a huge public scandal in the first place.
“I called and texted… I begged you to accept help - we sent someone to your home…and instead of speaking to me to accept this or any help, you stopped answering your phone and chose to only speak to tabloids. If you love me, as you tell the press you do, please stop. Please allow us to live our lives in peace. Please stop lying, please stop creating so much pain, please stop exploiting my relationship with my husband…”
The former actress’ half-sister, Samantha, also a daughter of Thomas Markle, talked to The Sun and stated that the letter was “nasty”, and that they will be publishing more of it soon. This letter appeared just a few days of a People interview with Meghan’s friends, where they defended her and stated that the Duchess had to deal with “lies and untruths” and “global bullying”.
They talked about a letter that she sent to her father, explaining how hurt she was over their estranged relationship. In response, Thomas only asked her for a photo op. Her friends were also worried about her condition and the baby, stating, “It's wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they're pregnant."
Aside from her relationship with her father, the Duchess of Sussex has dealt with horrible comments from the media, who have named her “Duchess Difficult” after several staff members quit. The press is also alleging that she and her husband are feuding with Prince William and Kate Middleton, and that Meghan has forbidden Prince Harry from drinking alcohol and coffee.
Furthermore, they said that Meghan asked her husband to skip the royal Christmas shoot because she hates the blood sport, but they attended in the end. Additionally, the Duchess has had to deal with hateful and racist comments on social media, and Kensington Palace joined up with Instagram to put a stop it. Offline, she even received a package with white powder and a racist message.
KENSINGTON PALACE TAKES ACTION TO STOP SOCIAL MEDIA ATTACKS
Both Meghan and Kate have been the victims of malicious comments on Instagram and Twitter, and the palace is fed up with it. They've resort to contacting both platforms and asking them them for help on the subject. The comments, which appear on Kensington Palace’s official Instagram and Twitter accounts, talk about their clothes, their origins, and their appearances.
Staff members are tasked to monitor and delete any negative comments relating to these topics. However, things have escalated so dramatically, that they are now forced to take other actions. A source said that both social media sites are supportive and want to combat the hate. Hello! Magazine said that the palace crew had to work hours every week to report all the horrible messages.
A source of the magazine said: "They can block certain words, but some of it is quite serious. You can delete and report and block people, and the police have options around particular people. It's something you have to manage because there's no other way to control it." The policy of Kensington Palace is to take action against particularly heinous and racist comments.
Other critical messages that are not harmful are left alone. Neither Kate nor Meghan have social media accounts as the former actress had to shut down all her online sites when she announced her engagement to Prince Harry. Kensington Palace opened their Twitter account in September 2014, and their Instagram was opened in January 2015.
Many people have critiqued Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for not making a harsher policy for these situations and stopping the fake news. In a statement to INSIDER, Twitter said: "We don't comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons. Our abusive behavior policy clearly states that we do not tolerate behavior that harasses, threatens, or uses fear to silence the voices of others."
