Why Hulk's Role in 'Avengers 4' Is Going To Be More Crucial Than Many Fans Think (Bruce Banner)

‘The Incredible Hulk’ is the only film in the MCU dedicated solely to Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Because of to the studio's problems with Edward Norton, they ended up replacing him with Mark Ruffalo. This might be one of the reasons why Marvel hasn't released another Hulk film, but it doesn't mean that his character hasn't grown incredibly since then. In fact, he could be vitally important for ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Let’s analyze the details.

THE NARRATIVE OF THE HULK

Mark Ruffalo has expressed his desire to make a solo Hulk movie for years, but Marvel hasn't agreed to this yet. The reason behind this is because Hulk movies usually don't do well at the box office. However, the Russo brothers told the actor that his character would develop over several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ was one example.

Furthermore, his arc would have just as much screen time as a solo film, and the actor was pleased about this development. This means that Bruce Banner and the Hulk will need to appear more in the upcoming movie, only because of Ruffalo’s contract with Marvel. That's not necessarily a bad thing for both parties, as both the scientist and the green monster have managed to become essential to the Avengers.

Furthermore, it’s very likely that his arc will reach its climax point soon and fans of the character are going to be delighted. Some people hoped that Marvel would go farther with Natasha and Bruce’s relationship by now, but that hasn't happened. There's a chance that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will show a tiny bit of romance in the midst of the Decimation.

THE SUPER SOLDIER

Edward Norton’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ was one of the first films in the MCU, back when Marvel wasn't owned by Disney. Sadly, it didn’t do well in theaters - but it was vitally important to the story of the Hulk. In the film, they explained that the Hulk is part of a government experiment, meant to recreate the Super Soldier program that created Captain America during World War II.

By the end of the movie, Bruce was able to transform into the Hulk less destructively. In the following films, the control over his transformation seemed to disappear. This might have been done purposely, as a plot device, to reestablish Bruce and the Hulk now that a new actor was selected to portray the role. In any case, Bruce is a warrior, designed to fight just like Steve Rogers.

Most fans were disappointed that Hulk didn't appear in ‘Avengers: Infinity War.' Little did they know that this was part of the arc the Russos are trying to create with this character. It’s also expected that he will be crucial for ‘Avengers: Endgame’, as some people speculate that a new version like Professor Hulk might finally be making an appearance.

THE PRETENDER

There is also a notion circulating that Loki disguised himself as the Hulk right before his fight against Thanos, on the ship where the Asgardians had fled from Asgard. Or, possibly, before the beginning of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. That could explain why Hulk couldn't defeat the Mad Titan, despite his incredible strength.

It also means that Loki isn't actually dead, which would be a relief to most fans. After Heimdall sent him to Earth, he could have decided to pretend that the Hulk wouldn't come out to avoid fighting in hand-to-hand combat. However, it also raises the question of where the real Bruce Banner is - which could be wherever the Valkyrie and Korg went.

The Russo brothers claimed that they were able to get most of the Asgardians out before Thanos came aboard their ship, but they wouldn't reveal where they went. Everyone hopes that they'll make an appearance soon enough. And, that if this theory is correct, the Hulk should be with them and Loki can finally reveal himself.

THE PROFESSOR

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ was the perfect example of how the Hulk has changed since ‘The Avengers’, where he couldn't distinguish friend from foe. The Hulk could actually talk and even joked around with Thor and Valkyrie. It was refreshing to see how Hulk could be more than just a weapon. Even though his thoughts were still rather primitive, it paved the way for more theories regarding his further development.

Bruce Banner became frightened after discovering that he had lost two years of his life as the Hulk. He was worried that if the green giant came out again, he would be gone forever. The Hulk allegedly only came out when Bruce got too angry, but now, it was different. Some fans believe that Professor Hulk will be in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and a leaked photo of the superheroes hinted at it as well.

We can see several superheroes in the photo. Hulk, in particular, is sporting a real uniform compared to his usual ripped shorts look. The image is stating that he's no longer a creature that only knows how to smash, but can think and reason as well. Professor Hulk is the perfect combination of Bruce and the Hulk: the brains and the brawn.

It would be a logical evolution for both characters, as they finally learn to coexist with each other in the same body, and become the real Super Soldier that the Avengers will need. The Russo brothers said that the Hulk refused to come out during ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ because he was tired of being used as a weapon, and placed away when the threat was over.

Of course, they could be lying to avoid spoilers if the conspiracy about Loki is correct, but if not, then the only way to get the Hulk out again would be to come to a real compromise between him and Bruce. It’s going to be incredibly exciting to witness this moment in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ - the movie can't come soon enough!

Let us know what you think about the possible appearance of Professor Hulk and if Loki might still be alive. It's already been announced that the film will run for at least 3 hours, so we better get ready because anything could happen. Which theory do you believe in?
