Biggest Differences in Pregnancies of Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton That Are Worth Considering

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tied the knot in May 2018, people started the baby bump-watch. In October, they finally announced that Meghan was pregnant with baby Archie. Naturally, fans of the Royal family started comparing her pregnancy to Kate Middleton’s, and there were many obvious differences. Here are the details fresh from the oven!

Of course, Meghan and Kate are completely different ladies despite both managed to marry Windsor men. The Duchess of Cambridge grew up in the English high society, and she will probably become Queen consort in the future. On the other hand, Meghan is a former Hollywood actress who was raised in America in a humble home with her mother, Doria Ragland.

On October 15, 2018, Kensington Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child, and Meghan was already three months pregnant by then. The day the statement was posted on social media, Prince Harry and the former actress were in Australia during the first part of their Royal Tour.

They received hundreds of congratulatory messages from those nearby as well as from back home. Typically, the Queen does not allow pregnant women in the family to travel because the heirs have to be protected. However, Meghan was already scheduled for their first global tour, so it seems like she broke that rule. On the other hand, Kate Middleton stayed home for her three pregnancies.

She only traveled to Norway during her third pregnancy with Prince Louis, but most of the time, she stayed in the UK. Understandably, Kate might have wanted to go for a safer route because her children are currently the direct heirs to the throne. Meghan’s child is seventh in line, and it’s not likely that he will ever wear the crown.

Rumors had it that Meghan and Harry revealed their pregnancy news during Princess Eugenie’s wedding, apparently stealing her thunder. The truth is that Royal announcements have to go through Kensington Palace first. People work at the press office there, and they release all the important news regarding the family.

While Kensington Palace announced both Meghan and Kate’s pregnancies, the official revelation was rather different. Most couples wait until the end of their first trimester to announce a pregnancy because anything can happen during those 12 weeks, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to do it that way. Kensington Palace revealed that the former actress had already had her first scan, and everything was going well.

Additionally, the palace revealed that Meghan’s mother, Doria, couldn’t be happier about their news and was eager to meet her first grandchild. Unlike most expectant mothers, Meghan had no time to rest after the announcement of her pregnancy.

Her Royal Tour was getting busier every day; she met the people on the streets of Sydney, visited Taronga Zoo to pet some koalas, and attended a formal dinner at Admiralty House. That means that she had to change her clothes several times, and it was essential to find something that would be comfortable and appropriate to show off her baby bump.

However, things were getting too hectic for Harry’s wife, and he decided to ask the palace staff if she could have a lighter schedule for the rest of the tour. Any proud father would worry about keeping his wife and child safe, no matter how important a Royal tour might be.

Most fans of the family remember the day Kate Middleton announced her first pregnancy because it was completely different from Meghan and Harry’s news. At first, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were blown away with happiness about their first child; another heir to the throne. The couple wanted to wait for the first trimester to be over before revealing their news.

It would have been the perfect Christmas announcement for 2012, but things did not go as planned. Unfortunately, through three pregnancies, Kate developed a condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum, which is a harsher form of morning sickness. It’s not uncommon as it affects many expecting mothers, but not everyone suffers from it.

At the beginning of December 2012, Kate had to be rushed to the hospital due to her situation, and she was there for three days. Royal protocol dictated that they needed to change the announcement, and the big Christmas surprise was over. The public worried about Kate’s health, and Kensington Palace felt the need to update them about the current situation.

They did not want to do it, but it was the only way to explain why she was in the hospital. Therefore, Kate was not able to control her pregnancy announcement, and she could not even thank all the well-wishers because she had not left the hospital yet.

Another difference is that Meghan’s mother was able to make a statement to the media, especially in a year filled with drama regarding Meghan's father, Thomas Markle.

However, Kate’s mother has never done such a thing, and people have wondered if they were breaking the protocol once again. On another note, since the announcement of her pregnancy was so sudden, the Duchess of Cambridge did not have time to prepare herself for the cameras. Instead, she looked tired and wore a checked coat and scarf.

During their stay in Australia, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke to many people who had traveled from all over the world to see them. One of those people was Prince Harry's fan, Daphne, who died at 99 years old. She met him so many times that Harry actually recognized her in the sea of admirers. Meghan told her, “Hopefully, the next time we see you, we will have our little one with us!”

The former actress was able to interact with the public about her pregnancy, but the Duchess of Cambridge never had the chance due to her serious health condition.

Prince William and the rest of the palace felt that it was better to go directly from the hospital to their home. Meghan was also counseled on taking things easy, but it was not as dire as Kate’s situation.

She had to cancel a bunch of events due to her illness and only attended those seriously necessary, but rarely. Fortunately, Meghan Markle didn't suffer anything like this.

Another significant difference between both Duchesses is that Meghan got more liberties regarding her public statements, her traveling schedule, and her appearances. Kate had to adhere to stricter rules. The Duchess of Cambridge became pregnant with her first child at the age of 31, while Meghan at 37.

Some fans even wondered if the couple would try straight away for a child due to her age. Prince William and Kate waited two years before finally getting pregnant with Prince George, but the new couple wasted no time to make their family bigger, and they look happier every time they go out in public with baby Archie.

  2. Meghan Markle boldly stepped away from another royal tradition.

On another note, Meghan is biracial as her mother is Black while her father is White. Archie is the first mixed-race child in the royal family. Furthermore, the former actress is American, which makes her baby an American citizen due to U.S. laws. He is the only member of the family with dual citizenship.

Another aspect of their pregnancies that was different was that Kate gave birth to all her children at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s in Paddington. Meghan, on the other hand, gave birth at Portland Hospital in London.

Among the few similarities between both pregnancies was that Prince William and Kate learned the gender of their baby after the birth, and Prince Harry and Meghan followed this rule, too. Furthermore, the first person, besides the parents and the hospital staff, to learn about the gender of the baby is always the Queen. Then, they announce it to the public through several platforms.

Social media was not as popular back in 2012 when Kate got pregnant for the first time, so it would have been scandalous to announce such news on Twitter. In Harry and Meghan's case, the proud father talked to journalist and shared a couple of aspects of Archie soon after he was born.

The biggest difference between Meghan’s child and Kate’s children is that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are higher in the line of succession.

It’s unlikely that Archie will ever take the throne. Prince George will probably be King. Therefore, the former actress might be able to raise her child a bit differently than Kate has done so far.
