14 Awesome Superhero Movies That Are Neither Marvel Nor DC
When we talk about superhero movies, DC Comics and Marvel immediately come to mind. However, these aren’t the only franchises that make movies about extraordinary people. If you're sick of seeing movies from only these two companies, then make sure to check out this list and find out about other interesting superhero films! Let's start.
1. The Incredibles
This is considered to be one of the best Disney Pixar films of all time, and it's about a family formed by superheroes. You've probably already seen the film, but it's honestly so good that you can rewatch it over and over again. The plot consists of a married couple, Mr. Incredible and Elasti-Girl, struggling against government prohibition of superpowered activities. They are then forced, with their kids, to go against the law to fight crime and save the world.
This one is another classic superhero movie. It's based on a comic book with the same name, and the film is actually a mix of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and ‘Ghostbusters’. At the end of World War II, a baby demon is brought to the world and then is taken by the Allies. Years later, he turns into one of the best agents for the Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense. He is known as Hellboy.
Don’t get fooled by the ‘typical’ plot of some teenage kids gaining super abilities, because this film has a completely different narrative style. The movie is developed as a documentary that shows three teenagers who find an unusual substance that gives them superpowers. As they develop their new skills, they start becoming more troubled and wrecked than they ever were, with some strange things unfolding afterward. Everything gets recorded on one of the boys’ camera.
You probably heard about ‘Split’ - but what you probably don’t know, is that it's actually part of a trilogy and that ‘Unbreakable’ is the first film of the saga. In this film, a man survives a terrible accident. Afterward, an unknown person appears in life, trying to explain to him why he didn't get harmed in the train crash. The reason? He has superpowers.
This film will not only entertain you but will make you laugh a lot too. It offers you a realistic view of how it would be to be a superhero in real life, and all the consequences it brings. The film is about a ‘loser’ teenager who gets tired of being normal and starts aspiring to become a superhero - just like the ones he always reads about. Eventually, he meets Hit-Girl and realizes that his crazy dream is not as impossible as it might seem.
6. The Crow
This is an iconic film you've probably already heard of. There is a lot of mysticism and superstition within the plot, and that’s probably what made it so famous. ‘The Crow’ is based on a comic book about a couple who gets assassinated by a gang. On the anniversary of their death, the boyfriend resurrects to avenge the death of his loved one. And of course, he is known as The Crow.
Despite the movie being based from the supervillain's perspective, it couldn’t be left out of this list because of its very unusual plot. The film is about an evil genius called Megamind, and how he's finally at peace after defeating his biggest superhero rival.
Of course, Megamind starts getting bored because every villain needs someone to fight against, so he creates his own new opponent. However, things go downhill when the ‘superhero’ he created, decides that he would be a better villain than Megamind.
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This is a classic TV series and many people's childhood favorite. Several movies about these heroes have been released, but the first movie is considered to be the best yet. A group of four mutant turtles are highly skilled in martial arts, and they help defend New York from crime. It's a film full of action and comedy, that you and your kids will never forget.
9. Sky High
This movie mixes two things that we've already seen before, but the unoriginal idea doesn’t stop it from being interesting and entertaining. Sky High is an education center made for teenagers with supernatural abilities, but besides learning how to fight crime, they also will have to learn how to deal with the classic teenage drama.
10. The Mask of Zorro
We all know this character very well since he had one of the most famous TV shows of all times. The plot of this movie is about a man that's learning to be the new Zorro after Don Diego. This man is Alejandro Murrieta and he finds that fitting the shoes of his predecessor is no easy work. The movie follows his adventures, and how he finally manages to become the new avenger of the town.
11. Mystery Men
One of the most interesting thing about this film is that it has a greatly talented cast, all full of unique personalities. Considered a cult classic, this is a movie that every superhero fan needs to add to their list. The plot consists of seven amateur ‘superheroes’ that want to prove how skilled they are after Champion City’s greatest superhero has been taken away. Many of their superpowers are weird and unusual, which will definitely make you laugh too.
