10 Most Promising Disney Movies Of 2019: Major Things To Expect
Disney released several amazing motion pictures last year, including ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, but 2019 is bound to be just as wonderful with many titles in the Mouse House roster. There are expected sequels like ‘Avengers: Endgame’, but also several live-action of their classic films like ‘Dumbo’. Let’s get into the magic that everyone will enjoy in theaters soon enough.
1. CAPTAIN MARVEL – MARCH 8
The Academy Award winner Brie Larson will be playing Carol Danvers in Marvel’s first solo female superhero film. Set in the 90s, the story follows Danvers after she acquires her superpowers and eventually becomes Captain Marvel. For anyone that is planning to catch ‘Endgame’ in April, this one is a must-see as Captain Marvel is expected to finally appear next to the Avengers.
Another great reason is getting to know more about Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, as the motion picture will show how he lost his eye. Additionally, Jude Law will be joining the Marvel Universe, and fans of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will see the return of Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace.
2. DUMBO – MARCH 29
This is the live-action version of the 1941 classic animation about a baby elephant called Jumbo Jr. who was born with big ears and nicknamed Dumbo. This remake, directed by Tim Burton, will change several important details shown in the original film like the racist crows. There are also a couple of new characters like two kids that discover Dumbo’s ability to fly. The main stars who play in the movie are Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Michael Keaton.
3. PENGUINS – APRIL 17
This amazing Disneynature featured film will premiere right in time for Earth Day, and it follows the story of Steve the penguin in his search for a partner in the Antarctic. It’s also the eighth theatrical release from Disneynature. Anyone who loves these precious creatures will be enchanted by this amusing film.
4. AVENGERS: ENDGAME – APRIL 26
This is arguably the most anticipated film of the year, as it will show how the superheroes that did not vanish because of Thanos’ snap will save the universe. It’s up to Iron Man, Captain America, and Ant-Man to bring back the missing loved ones even if they have to sacrifice their owns lives.
Everyone was left in shock when the Mad Titan achieved his goal of wiping out half the universe at the end of ‘Infinity War’, but Tony, Steve, and the rest have a plan to reverse the effects of the Decimation. Some new characters like Captain Marvel should make an appearance, and favorite heroes that turned dust like Spider-Man should be back.
5. ALADDIN – MAY 24
The live-action remake of the Disney classic about the diamond in the rough is bound to blow people away. Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, a homeless guy that falls for Prince Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. After finding a magic lamp with a genie, played by Will Smith, his dreams might actually come true.
Guy Ritchie is directing the film, and fans are dying to see how he will show the amazing musical numbers like ‘Friend Like Me’ and ‘Prince Ali’. Alan Menken, the composer of the original movie, is back for this one as well, and aside from everyone’s favorites, there are two new songs like Disney did with ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
6. TOY STORY 4 – JUNE 21
The fourth installment in Disney and Pixar’s amazing franchise will show Woody and the rest of the gang with several new friends after getting a new owner. Small spoiler: there is even a fork that won’t accept he is a toy. After the third motion picture, everyone thought this story was over, but Pixar surprised their fans when they announced this release.
In 2015, Pixar’s chief creative officer John Lasseter said that the movie was inspired by his wife, and it’s a love story between Woody and Bo Peep, who did not appear in ‘Toy Story 3’. Tim Allen, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, said that the film is too emotional, and it's difficult not to believe that as the previous one had everyone crying.
7. THE LION KING – JULY 2019
Another live-action for 2019 that follows the story of Simba. The main hero is a lion cub that ran away from home after the death of his father but has to return to save his pride from the awful regime of his uncle Scar. The first trailer was a recreation of the opening scene of the original 1994 film when all the animals neared Pride Rock, and Rafiki presented Simba.
Jon Favreau was brought in as director after his amazing work with ‘The Jungle Book’, which earned $1 billion worldwide. Stars like Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be voicing the characters. Last but not least, James Earl Jones is back as Mufasa.
8. ARTEMIS FOWL – AUGUST 9
This is the film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s books about a 12-year-old boy, Artemis Fowl, who was born in a family of criminal geniuses. Fowl encounters fairies that might have had a hand in the disappearance of his father. Disney has not invested that much in publicity for this film as they normally release trailers during football games or on talk shows like ‘Good Morning America’ on ABC.
However, the first teaser of this movie was released on a random Tuesday. This is Disney’s only real risky premiere this year since it might become either a huge franchise similar to ‘Harry Potter’ or will flop on the box office and be forgotten forever.
9. FROZEN 2 – NOVEMBER 22
While there is still no official synopsis for the sequel of the smash hit, Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad will be back as Anna, Elsa, and Olaf, respectively. There will be many new songs, especially about the sisters. Disney released a short film about Olaf that was right before ‘Coco’, causing a huge backlash from the Latin community.
‘Frozen 2’ is bringing directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee as well as the Academy Award winners Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez for their songs. The film’s premiere was even moved up one week, and it’s bound to be just as popular as the first one.
10. STAR WARS: EPISODE IX – DECEMBER 20
There is still no summary for this film either, but it will finalize the Skywalker story and show more of General Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, with the help of unused footage and special effects. ‘The Last Jedi’ had mixed reviews, but real ‘Star Wars’ fans are probably going to see this one at the cinema anyway.
Everyone needs to see Kylo Ren and Rey’s story develop, and find out if those heroes finally reveal who Rey’s parents are. JJ Abrams is not just back directing, he also wrote the script. Therefore, the Skywalker saga that started decades ago will be given its proper swan song.
