Marvel's X-Force Movie And Deadpool 3: Script Writers Confirm Long-Suspected Development

The 20th Century Fox and Disney deal has raised uncertainty among fans regarding the future of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Recent speculation stated that an X-Force movie had been canceled and that ‘Deadpool 3’ would never happen under the Mouse House, but luckily a new interview with writers set things straight. Here are the details.

‘Deadpool’ writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick sat down with Screenrant to talk about the next movie in the franchise and what everyone should expect from the upcoming project, mainly after the merger between Fox and Disney is finalized. When they were asked what would happen to the films that could end up on the chopping block, Rhett said:

"According to the chronology we've established, X-Force will be next, before Deadpool 3." Then, he talked about the way that Marvel likes to release their films. "It's a bit of the 'Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Avengers, Iron Man 3' model, in that sense.” He continued with: “X-Force isn't being written by us. It's being written and directed by Drew Goddard [who penned Marvel's Daredevil series and 2015 movie The Martian], or at least that's the plan right now. We're not involved with that one.”

"We do anticipate there will be a Deadpool 3 at some point, but it's just a little premature because it will definitely take a backseat to X-Force for the time being." Then, Paul decided to add: "We're constantly in touch with Ryan (Reynolds), and we're always throwing ideas back and forth via text and phone conversations. So, it's always at the front of our minds. We'll get there when the time is right, but as of right now, X-Force is next up."

Unfortunately, the writers could not reveal any dates as nothing has been set in stone yet. Furthermore, the comment “that’s the plan for now” suggests that things could change in the future. Luckily, it seemed that both of them were sure of the projects, so fans can rest easy that their favorite characters will eventually join the Disney roster, and that Deadpool will continue to be R-Rated.

However, they might have to wait a bit longer than expected, which is reasonable because the Marvel schedule could be full in the next couple of years, especially with so many characters to allocate, even Rhett and Paul have their hands full at the moment while promoting ‘Zombieland 2’ with Dave Callaham. That one is apparently going to be just as awesome as the first one, and Rhett added:

"Zombieland 2 starts shooting in January in Atlanta, Georgia. All the principals are back. We're very excited. We think we finally got to a place where we think we got a sequel that's worthy of the first movie. Time will tell if that's the case, but it will come out sometime in October or November, or something like that. Later this year."

Regarding the cast of the next sequel for the Merc with a Mouth, Ryan Reynolds has definitely signed on for the role of Wade Wilson once again. In a recent interview with Lorraine Kelly, the heartthrob talked about the character, “It's the role I feel most privileged to have in my entire career. I feel like I was sort of born for it. I love Deadpool. It's the miracle of the mask."

Sadly, no one else has been confirmed for the next film, but it’s expected that it should feature many stars according to some speculation. Furthermore, Reynolds hinted that Hugh Jackman could cameo as Wolverine in ‘Deadpool 3’, although the actor officially retired from his X-Men days after ‘Logan’. It would be amazing to have him back.

‘Deadpool 2’ featured several new superheroes, although some did not last long. Luckily, Cable, played by Josh Brolin, and Domino, portrayed by Zazie Beetz, are expected to return and join Wade Wilson in his future adventure. Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and Russell could also join the X-Force team, and they might add Peter. Sadly, fans should not expect Shatterstar or Zeitgeist, as they died, but anything could happen.

Characters come back from the dead in superhero movies all the time, and Vanessa, Wade’s girlfriend, is the perfect example. She should be back for the third installment in this franchise. There is some speculation that Mr. Sinister might be the big villain in the next film, though the cameo from Omega Red in the Ice Box Prison part could have been a hint of the future bad guy.

Before the sequel was announced, Ryan Reynolds talked about the direction of the storyline to Entertainment Weekly, stating: "I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don't think that you can keep doing that."

The actor wants the next film to set a new goal for Deadpool while remaining as the cool, sarcastic and potty-mouth anti-hero all fans have come to expect. He said that the sequel needs to "break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no-one else can do". Some people have taken this to mean that time travel could feature in the movie, especially after Negasonic Teenage Warhead was seen fixing Cable’s device.

The film could also explore more of Cable’ origins, presenting his daughter who plays a huge part in the story of mutants in the comic books. Things could be very different, according to Reynolds, “Often, they reboot or change a character maybe like four movies too late.” The actor also talked about Deadpool’s pansexuality:

"I certainly think that this universe... needs to represent and reflect the world in very real ways. The great thing about Deadpool is that we're allowed to do things that other superhero movies don't necessarily do."

Are you excited about the upcoming X-Force movie and ‘Deadpool 3’? It might be weird to have all those characters under Disney, but if they add them to the MCU, the stories should be fantastic. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who have prayed for the merger of Marvel superheroes for years. See you next time!
