Sex Education Cast’s Real-Life Couples
Sex Education has quickly become everybody's new favorite Netflix original series. This show allows one to feel like a 17-year old again. Although the cast members onscreen love lives are undeniably complicated (or in some cases, non-existent), fans were curious to find out how the actors' luck in love is like offscreen.
Have you heard the rumor about actor Asa Butterfield, who plays the role of shy Otis Milburn, dating The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev? Did you know that Ncuti Gatwa is nearly the oldest actor, portraying a high school student in the show? And what does Gillian Anderson think about the role of a single mother? We're ready to tell you all the answers!
Ncuti Gatwa as Eric Effiong
How old do you think he is? 18? 20? maybe 22? Keep going, he's 27 already! And he's nearly the oldest actor, portraying a high school student in the show. Within just 1 week, the actor Nicuti Gatqa has gone from a completely unknown guy to a breakout star in the most talked-about show of the new year. Unlike his co-star Asa Butterfield (Otis Milburn), Nicuti didn't have that much acting experience, besides some episodes in the sitcom Bob Servant and mini-series Stonemouth.
Ncuti Gatwa has become a real find for the role of extremely charismatic Eric, who, during the whole season, is fighting to be seen for what he is. Even if that's a teenage boy in heels and with bright makeup from a religious Nigerian family.
“I think the lessons you can get from this show is that everyone’s sexual journey is different, and to stick to whatever path is truest for you”, - Gatwa revealed.
The actor is hoping that in the next season Eric will keep discovering who he is. "I'd be quite excited for Eric to find love, because he's got a lot of love to give, and it would be quite nice for it to be returned", - he added.
Even though Gatwa is portraying a gay character, he has never publicly discussed his own sexuality. With his growing success on TV, it is likely that the female audience will keep an eye on his relationship status. However, Gatwa seems to be mostly focused on his professional growth rather than girls and has given zero clues about his previous girlfriends on his social media profiles.
Emma Mackey as Maeve Wiley
Emma Maeve, with her pink hairstreak, vintage fringe jacket, and rebellious nature has become a new icon since the very first episode. And her hairstyle has become a new fashionable trend! The actress is often being compared to Margot Robbie which is a bit annoying for Emma. Yes, they do look a little alike, yes, their characters have colorful hair and rebellious nature, but that's where the similarity ends.
Interestingly, 23-year-old Emma notes that when she was a teenager, she was quite different from her Sex Education character, saying that while she “spent a lot of my teenage years trying to fit in”, Maeve is “unapologetically herself”, even in the face of bullying and slut-shaming from her peers.
Before landing the role of Maeve, Emma only had little professional experience and admits that even though in the beginning it made her nervous. “I mean, I was shitting myself on that first day,” the actress laughs.
Unlike her co-stars, Emma doesn't make a huge mystery out of her personal life. On Valentine's Day, the actress shared a cover-up snap of her and her love, Dan Whitlam, on her Instagram. He is also an aspiring actor and he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The red-head star has been acting on stage as Albert Kropp in All Quiet on the Western Front at the Pleasance Theatre in London. We don't know how long Emma and Dan have been dating but Mackey first posted a photo of them together back in January, along with an emoji of a girl and boy holding hands.
Kedar Williams-Stirling as Jackson Marchetti
That's how the stereotypical most popular guy in high school looks. A handsome swimming champion with a sports jacket that fits him incredibly well. But soon we realize that the life of the "school's hope" is not as easy as it seems, as he has to get up at 5 every morning and constantly be afraid of not meeting his mothers' expectations. Speaking of season 2, the actor Kedar Williams-Stirling admitted he hoped Jackson will be "coming to terms with the fact he can be independent."
Kedar Williams-Stirling started acting at a very young age and has kept on going through the years on stage as well as on both big and small screens. Among his roles are parts in Shank and Montana, and also the role of Tom Okanawe in the series Wolfblood.
"I got sent through the audition pieces and met up with Lauren Evans the fantastic casting director, and then did the chemistry with Emma, met the show’s creator through this whole process... And then I got the call to say “Do you want to do this role?” and I was like “Yesss pleeeease!”
As for the actor's personal life, there's nothing we know about. On his Instagram profile, he posts pictures of him with his friends, dogs, cats… and the picture with the most important woman in a person's life!
Connor Swindells as Adam Groff
Adam Groff is another controversial character in the show. A drug addict and a couch potato who's not getting expelled just because he is the principal's son. And that is the main conflict, the conflict of the son who is getting about no support or approval from his father.
″I think that any son at some point or other… struggles with their father in some way, shape or form. It’s just kind of that person that’s around and is sort of your first role model,” said actor Connor Swindells.
The actor started his career only a few years ago, but he's already managed to land some episodes in the series Harlots and the movie The Vanishing along with actors such as Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan. Adam Connor landed his part earlier than other actors because he knew the show's creator who immediately suggested him as a candidate.
By the way, you definitely remember Aimee Lou Wood who portrayed Aimee Gibbs, Adam's ex and Maeve's friend. Well, after meeting on the set, Aimee and Connor kept in touch and are now dating! Instagram is full of cute pictures of the two lovebirds!
Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn
Perhaps, when you saw Asa in Sex Education, his face seemed somewhat familiar. Despite being just 21, he's already got more than 10 years of acting for film experience! At the age of 11, he portrayed the son of a Nazi officer in the Holocaust drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, then he landed a part in BBC series Merlin, and the main role in Martin Scorsese's drama Hugo.
His portrayal of Otis Milburn gave the actor the opportunity to demonstrate not only his dramatic but also comedic talent. Despite the fact that the show is somewhat similar to a vulgar teenage comedy, it raises a lot of painful topics of today's world.
Speaking of his own high school years, the actor also finds a connection with the shy Otis. “I was sort of in the middle. I was never the loud one in class, nor was I the quiet one. I was average.”
Now Asa is enjoying success in his professional life, but is he as happy in his private life and relationships? The rumor was that he was dating actress Ella Purnell, his co-star in the movie Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Their relationship was displayed in their Instagram profiles. Asa posted pictures of them relaxing in Mauritius, making it clear that the two of them even traveled together. But as it often happens at such a young age, this relationship ended as rapidly as it started.
The recent rumors were of the actor being spotted in the company of Nina Dobrev. Asa and Nina were working on Then Came You, a teenage drama that aired in 2018. The rumors after that emerged from a story on Nina's Instagram, where she and Asa were posing for a picture near a lake. But we think this isn't the kind of news for us to suspect that something besides friendship is going on between the two. This isn't surprising as Nina is 9 years older than Asa. As of now, the actor isn't seeing anyone, as he keeps busy with his professional career.
Gillian Anderson as Jean Milburn
Speaking of the Sex Education cast we are bound to mention Otis's amazing mother, portrayed by Gillian Anderson. We are used to seeing her portraying strong and powerful women, but those were mostly dramatic roles. Like, for example, the role of a psychiatrist in Hannibal or detective Stella Gibson in the serial-killer drama The Fall. Speaking of this role in a teenage comedy, Anderson says:
"I've always played such serious characters before. I've never had an experience like that where I've gotten to just let it all hang out so that in and of itself was such a pleasure."
Anderson, who has two pre-teen sons of her own, has found it easy to transform into a single mother. It's worth noting that the actress has had plenty of big romances and 2 divorces. Back in the spring of 2012, Anderson told Out magazine about her experience dating women, but still, she identifies herself as heterosexual.
"I am an actively heterosexual woman who celebrates however people want to express their sexuality. To me a relationship is about loving another human being; their gender is irrelevant."
She's now in a relationship with Peter Morgan, the creator of "The Crown", but she admitted she is only "part long-term" in their romance.
