Who Will End Up On The Iron Throne In Games Of Thrones?
Yaaay! Winter is here! It's April, and the world is generally losing its mind in anticipation of the final season of the beloved ‘Game of Thrones.’ The main question on everyone's mind is who will eventually end up on the Iron Throne after the war. Will it be the obvious choices like Jon Snow or Daenerys? Or will it be Sansa Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Gendry and Arya Stark? While we await the series to find out, here is our theory about who will likely sit on the Iron Throne.
Daenerys is a Targaryen, whose family formed the Iron Throne and ruled the kingdom for 300 years. She believes she is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Daenerys possesses lots of characteristics that would make her a great queen; she’s ambitious and uncompromising, yet empathetic and fair. Also, to one of the most apparent reasons, she is the Mother of Dragons with two dragons.
In season 2, she had a vision where she tried reaching for the throne, but she found herself beyond the wall. This may mean that her quest to sit on the throne is overtaken by her dedication to win the war between humans and the white walkers.
Although Jon Snow is her nephew, the two marrying each other could be an advantage as she and Jon Snow could rule the kingdom together. However, there is a legend in 'The Song of Ice and Fire,' that a warrior once defeated the white walkers by sacrificing his loving wife's heart. Perhaps this could be the fate of Daenerys with Jon Snow.
In Daenerys’ vision, she found snow on the throne, and this could mean that Jon Snow will eventually sit on the throne. Now that we know that he is the true heir being the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. We also know that his real name is Aegon Targaryen.
Since Jon Snow is the only living son of Prince Rhaegar, who is the elder brother of Daenerys Targaryen, Dany is no longer the heir of the Targaryen dynasty. However, we have our doubts about Jon Snow desiring the throne. The alliance he has with Dany and his love for her might make him step down and let her claim the Iron Throne - as long as she doesn't die in the war.
DAENERYS TARGARYEN AND JON SNOW'S CHILD
Following the blood sacrifice of her unborn son - Rhaego, the Mother of Dragons was told by the priestess Mirri Maz Duur that she would never be able to have children. However, with various leads from the series, we are almost convinced that she will have a child with Jon Snow. The child could actually be the “Prince that was promised…” and be the true heir to the throne.
That's not all - there is another theory. the prophecy by Missandei also revealed that the prince would be promised to the Night King, which suggests that Daenerys would get pregnant, but her unborn child will be sacrificed to the Night King for peace to reign.
Gendry, the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon, cannot inherit the throne unless he's legitimized by the family, like Ramsey Bolton. If this happens, Gendry will be the rightful heir to the throne. Some believe he is the true-blood son of Robert and Cersei; the child Cersei claimed that he died in childhood.
Apart from the fact that Gendry recounted that his mother had yellow hair (The Mad Queen has the most apparent yellow hair in the series), would Cersei have given away her child with King Robert to make sure her child with Jamie inherited the throne? We are not sure.
It might seem somehow poetic to finish the series with someone as regular and random as Gendry (a minor character) in power. Gendry is only a blacksmith and knows nothing about politics, and he doesn't even seem to want the throne. However, he might eventually rule the Stormlands (that belongs to the House Baratheon of King's Landing)
Tyrion Lannister, the subtle and witty character, could end up on the Iron Throne. Although, this seems unlikely because the people of Westeros hate him and know him as a kingslayer who supposedly murdered Joffrey. Also, we know Tyrion probably does not want the throne. In season 6, episode 8, he said:
“I'd like to have my own vineyard, make my own wine. The Imp’s delight.”
Tyrion has had enough taste of power so he might not actually end up as a mere man with a vineyard, as being a King or Queen's right man suits him more. He might also be a reagent to Dany and Snow’s child, till he/she becomes of age to rule the kingdom or rule Lannister's house, Casterly Rock. However, if and when the enormous multi-front war finally ends, and Tyrion is one of the last major characters left standing, he might just be the one who will end up on the Iron Throne.
The oldest living Stark child, Sansa has always had a thing for the throne. In season one, she expressed her desire to be a Queen and hoped to marry Prince Joffrey to become one. However, that didn't work out. Sansa later spent years learning politics from some of the best in the game like Cersei, Little finger, and Olenna. Later on, Sansa became the leader of Winterfell through the help of the North and Vale.
After suffering for so many years, Sansa seems to love being in charge. Although she has no right to the Iron Throne, she might be able to gain it through murder or marriage. There have been speculations of Sansa getting married to Jon Snow in the book, however with the way season 7 ended, she seems very loyal to the Starks and will remain in Winterfell.
The Mad Queen is currently on the Iron Throne, but we all know she won't be there for long. Apart from the fact that her army might not be able to defeat both Daenerys and Jon Snow's forces, the witch, Maggy the Frog, had predicted her being overthrown by a much younger queen, whom we all perceive to be Dany.
“Queen you shall be… until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear…Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds,” she said. “And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”
Apart from her losing the throne, she would also be killed by "the valonqar" which means "little brother." Although Cersei seems to overlook her brother Jamie, he is most likely going to be the one to fulfill this dark prophecy, just like he killed the Mad King, Aerys Targeneys.
THE NIGHT KING
Ever thought about this? What if the white walkers win the war and the Night King claim the Iron Throne? Well, this seems very unlikely too, as the producers of the show have revealed that the end of the show wouldn't end in the form of a horrible apocalypse but with an "emotional and bittersweet" ending.
“It's about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death...It's an incredibly emotional haunting bittersweet final season, and I think it honors very much what (author George R.R. Martin) set out to do—which is flipping this kind of story on its head."
Bryan Cogman, a co-executive producer told EW about the final season. This implies that they will most probably defeat the white walkers.
THE IRON THRONE DESTROYED
The Iron Throne was created by the first Targaryen to rule Westeros, Aegon, who had it made by melting down the swords of his enemies with Dragonfire. This means that to destroy the throne, a dragon’s fire will also be needed.
The mother of dragons once had a vision where she saw the Throne room destroyed with fire. If this happens, it could be the start of a new regime, where the symbol of fight and rivalry, the Iron Throne, is no longer in place, and the seven kingdoms (nine kingdoms now) will independently run nation states under a free federal government controlled by a peaceful, dragon-loving family (if Dany or Jon Snow eventually get the Throne).
Many fans have gone into overdrive with various theories of how the show will end, while we patiently await the release of the 8th season of the series this month, we are excitedly looking forward to seeing if any of these theories end up being right.
