The most uncomfortable GoT scenes that actors were forced to film
Any fan of ‘Game of Thrones’ knows that the show can be absolutely brutal, and the characters go through some intensely uncomfortable situations. Therefore, the actors had to face those hardships too, and it was not easy for any of them. Some even refused to do a couple of the worst scenes. Can you guess which scenes were the hardest? Let’s find out more!
THE WALK OF SHAME
During Season Five, Cersei had to make her “walk of atonement” for the sin of adultery and incest. It meant that actress Lena Headey had to march naked through lots of people while extras yelled insults, and even threw food and dirt at her. A scene has to be difficult if audiences feel bad for one of the worst people in Westeros.
Most of the actors in ‘GOT’ perform nude scenes themselves, but Headey decided to use a body double for this particularly awful scene. Filming took three days, the actress did not think she could portray Cersei that well if she had to be naked all that time. Additionally, she commented that doing such scenes brings up awkward conversations with her real-life kids.
Instead, Rebecca Van Cleave walked through the crowds and Lena’s head was added later. Headey did receive some negative comments for her choice, but said, "You know what? It was really a bit shocking.” She continued,
"I've done nudity. I'm not averse to it. But I know I'm a very emotional actor and I get really driven by that."
THE SEPT OF BAELOR EXPLOSION
Season Six’s finale was one of the best in the shows’ history, and it ended with Cersei blowing up the Sept of Baelor with wildfire before she was supposed to face a trial for her crimes. Lancel Lannister, who had become a religious zealot, was stabbed under the church, and he saw the candles that were about to ignite the place.
He tried, in vain, to reach them in time and blow them up but did not make it. Actor Eugene Simon had a difficult time in that scene because he had to crawl for the entire time. "I had to do it twenty-seven times," he revealed. "By the end of it, I was covered in sweat from exhaustion, by the time I got to the fire… I felt like the Hulk."
THE DROWNING OF EURON GREYJOY
Actor Pilou Asbæk plays the role of Euron Greyjoy, a horrible man that does not care about anything except getting power. However, the actor is not as scary as his character, and he was actually afraid of doing one particular scene. Every country in Westeros has its own traditions, and the Ironborns are weirder than most.
Every time a new king is crown, they have to go through the drowning ceremony. Naturally, filming this must have been difficult, and Pilou said it was a struggle for him. "When you're underwater, and there's a guy pushing you down, and it's very, very cold, it's one of those challenges that you have to accept as an actor," Asbæk said. "This is what it is. This is what we're going to do."
THE DEATH OF MERYN TRANT
‘GOT’ has had some of the best makeup artists and special effects crew in the business. Some of the actors have had to wear colored contacts like Maisie Williams, when her character, Arya turned blind for some time. Additionally, actor Ian Beattie, who plays Meryn Trant, required some prosthetics around his eyes because of that way he died in Season Five.
He had to remain with them on for a full day, which made him completely blind. It was the hardest scene he filmed for the show. "It was in many ways quite a surreal day," Beattie added. "It was very technical, but Maisie and I had worked it out in the rehearsals, and we were ready."
THE GIANTSBANE AGAINST THE WIGHTS
Kristofer Hivju has managed to make Tormund Giantsbane one of the best characters on the show, although he barely has any screentime. However, people were upset that ‘GOT’ left his fate on air during the Season Seven finale. The actor has shot many battles scenes, and those require some intense physical stunts.
By the time they were shooting the last episode, he was tired of filming with the wights. "In the beginning, it was tough, but in the end, it became a kind of horrible dance," he said. "It was extremely exhausting: They just kept coming, kept coming, kept coming."
Actress Indira Varma, who plays Ellaria Sand, had one of the hardest deaths scenes along with actress Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, who plays her daughter Tyene. Cersei put them in a dungeon and poisoned Tyene to avenge the death of her daughter, Myrcella. Ellaria was forced to watch Tyenne die horribly and slowly.
Indira revealed that she and Sellers had a hard time shooting with handcuffs on all day, and they had to fight against them. By the time they were done, Varma couldn’t even get the handcuffs off herself and the prop crew had to help. "Literally, at the end of the day, I was like, 'Mate, I can't get it off, can someone help me?' and everyone's gone.” She continued,
"Pete from props is like, 'I think we need a saw,' and I had to be sawn out."
THE HORSE HEART
Actress Emilia Clarke has had some of the toughest moments as Daenerys Targaryen on the show, but one scene, in particular, was nasty for her. During Season One, Dany had to eat a horse heart in a Dothraki ceremony. Clark was, of course, not eating a real raw hearts in the realistic moment, but the alternative was not that great either.
It was made out of jam, and the actress said that the flavor was somewhere between bleach and raw pasta. She did not need to act much during the scene because she was truly disgusted. Unfortunately, they shot that scene several times, and the actress revealed, "I ate roughly 28 hearts throughout the days we filmed that scene.” Clarke continued,
"Fortunately, they gave me a spit bucket because I was vomiting in it quite often."
JON AND DANY FALL IN LOVE
Jon Snow and Dany met in Season Seven, and it was clear that something was going to happen between them. It seemed very romantic, but unfortunately, the characters did not know that they were aunt and nephew. Jon is actually Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Therefore, the actors were a bit uncomfortable with their romance.
Kit Harington, who plays Jon, had become close friends with Emilia Clarke after so many years, and because they knew about their characters’ heritage, everything was a bit awkward. Kit once said, "I like looking at her and going, 'Oh, God, I'm so sorry!"
THE DRAGON PIT GATHERING
With so many characters, it is sometimes hard for all of them to work together in one scene. However, sometimes, it is due to other reasons. Bronn, played by Jerome Flynn, has never appeared in the same scene as Cersei. The reason is that Flynn and Headey were a couple long ago, and their breakup was bad enough that they refuse to act in the same scene.
They almost had a scene together during the Season Seven finale, when everyone gathered at the dragon pit to reveal the threat of the White Walkers. However, Bronn took Podrick with them for a drink right before Cersei arrived. Flynn and Headey broke up in 2014, and she started seeing her current lover, but things must still be rough with them.
The directors have luckily managed to work around this problem. Let us know which scene seemed like the hardest. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cannot wait for the next episode of Season Eight. See you next time!
