Why Natalie Portman Quit MCU And Her Shocking Appearance At ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Premiere

At the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Los Angeles premiere on Monday night, we saw many of our favorite characters looking stunning and bubbly as they took photos and granted interviews on the red carpet. However, there was a particular actress we were surprised to see at the premiere, and it was the sweet Natalie Portman. We knew Portman quit MCU especially since she was not featured in ‘Thor Ragnarok’ —the third sequel of Marvel's ‘Thor’ movie. So, seeing her on the red carpet has birthed many speculations about her involvement in MCU and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ We will not only share with you, why the actress left MCU, but also reveal why the actress probably attended the event. Enjoy!

We all know Natalie Portman didn’t die in ‘Thor: The Dark World.’ Having featured in ‘Thor’ (2011) and its sequel, ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (2013) as Thor's love interest and an astrophysicist, Dr. Jane Foster, Natalie was not seen in Marvel's latest installment of Thor movies, ‘Thor Ragnarok.’ However, Jane Foster's name was mentioned in passing in the movie.

Portman seems to have more preference for independently- minded films, even though she is not unfamiliar to the blockbusters’ movie scenes. At age 13, she played a character in one of Luc Besson’s ‘The Professional,’ in 1994. Later on, she featured alongside Al Pacino in Michael Mann’s crime thriller ‘Heat’ and opposite Jack Nicholson and Glenn Close in Tim Burton’s ‘Mars Attacks.’

It wasn’t a long while after she featured in the movies mentioned above, that she landed the role of Queen Amidala/Padme in the ‘Star Wars’ prequels. Viewers loved her characters but felt her performances in the films were unusually stiff and rustic.

Fans theorized that it was George Lucas who probably didn’t direct her well, or maybe Portman was the kind of actor who responded better to real people rather than a numerous array of green screens for visual effects.

Those theories by fans were assumed and postulated based on Portman’s later works. Portman bagged her first Oscar nomination in Mike Nichols’ ‘Closer,’ and won an Oscar for playing the role of a disturbed ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan.’

Portman returned to the green screens when Marvel presented her with a contract to appear in ‘Thor.’ Her performances in the two ‘Thor’ movies didn’t attract gobs of attention. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter things got complicated when Patty Jenkins, ‘Wonder Woman’s director, was either fired or willingly left the project over major creative differences. It was noted that Portman, who is a staunch feminist, was not impressed by the act.

MCU found a replacement for Jenkins, and it was Alan Taylor, who took over the directing duties. It is widely believed that Portman only stayed with the movie, principally because she was still under contract. Howbeit, once she was done with the deal, she left. An anonymous film agent made a comment about studios at the time:

“There’s a real arrogance. But in this environment where everybody’s struggling to stay employed, their behavior is amplified. We don’t have leverage. The movies are the stars.”

Marvel studio explained why even though two new main female characters, Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson, were introduced to the third installment of Marvel's Thor movies, Natalie Foster was nowhere to be seen. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige noted while on an interview with EW that with Tessa Thompson’s character, Valkyrie, the god of thunder will meet an equal who is more on his ‘god-like status’ level than a mere mortal. Feige said:

“We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok, and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior.”

Also, Chris Hemsworth described his character in ‘Thor Ragnarok’ as a single man enjoying his new status. He said:

“He’s certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there.”

Natalie Portman graced the premiere of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ on Monday in Hollywood, and stunned in a black bow-tie bodysuit paired with a glittering, embroidered black skirt. Many fans were surprised that she attended the show because her character had been written off in Marvel's ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ It was revealed in the movie that her character and Thor had a falling out. If Natalie ended her contract with Marvel back then, why was she then present at the premiere of Endgame? Does that imply that she is in the new ‘Avengers’ movie or she just stopped by to support the premiere of the film?

At the event, Portman interestingly said to Marvel Entertainment:

"It's been so exciting to be part of this Marvel Universe and see all of these incredible new characters be revealed to audiences every year, and of course to have women in science be front and center is incredible to spread that culture throughout the world."

However, in a 2016 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Portman affirmed that she was “done” with Marvel Cinematic Universe. She said:

“As far as I know, I’m done. I mean, I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7, or whatever.”

It wouldn't be wrong to dismiss the place of Brie Larson, Captain Marvel, in helping the Avengers in the movie when they could have Jane Foster on their team. After all, Larson is not the only Oscar-winning female actor who has starred in MCU movies (Natalie Portman is an Oscar-winning actress too). However, judging from another perspective, no one was particularly expecting Thor's estranged elder sister and Asgard's nemesis, Hela, to appear in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and Cate Blanchett— the actor who played Hela— didn't show up at the premiere.

Perhaps an Oscar award isn't the best yardstick for MCU.

Even though we are still quite confused about the real reason why Portman attended the premiere of the last ‘Avengers’ film, we are glad that the film is finally out in the theaters. Now, we can find out if she truly featured in the movie as many speculated or not. What do you think about Natalie Portman appearance at ‘Avengers: Endgame’ premiere? Do you think she left MCU based on other differences that were not mentioned? Let us know what you think in the comments. Remember to share this article with your friends, who are Marvel's fans.
