‘Avengers: Endgame’ Stars Got Extraordinary Matching Tattoos To Celebrate Their Roles In The MCU
‘Avengers: Endgame’ is definitely the hit of the year, and it will probably become the highest-grossing film of all time soon enough. The stars of the movie went through an amazing journey together, and they became close friends in the last years. Just like cast members from other important projects, some of the actors got matching tattoos, but one didn’t for a funny reason. Let’s find out more!
THE ORIGINAL AVENGERS
The final battle of ‘Endgame’ showed every hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Captain America called them all “Avengers”. However, fans will never forget that a few characters started the initiative. The original Avengers were comprised of Iron Man (Roberto Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
To commemorate their time as Avengers, especially the most important ones, the actors got matching ink. It’s apparently a custom-made design that includes the Avengers “A” logo and the number “6”, but there’s one superhero that was too afraid to get tattooed. The adorable Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce/The Hulk does not like needles.
Robert Downey Jr. shared a video on his Twitter in May 2018 of all those who got the ink and posted the caption, “@ChrisEvans, now we are one… All our love…@Renner4Real @eastsideinktattoo @chrishemsworth @joshualord.” He also shared a video of the tattoo process and the completed result on his Instagram.
Last year, Robert Downey Jr. told Entertainment Weekly,
“Five of the original six Avengers got a tattoo. And the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo.”
Chris Evans, our dear Steve Rogers, posted a video on his Twitter while he was getting the work done and captioned it, “Thanks for the ink, Joshua Lorde! (and for letting all of us maim you in return) Love to @RobertDowneyJr @Renner4Real @chrishemsworth Scarlett (we just need to get Ruffalo blackout drunk).”
Downey Jr. also continued explaining how each Avengers added to the ink and said,
“Each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us.”
WHY DID RUFFALO OPT OUT?
Working on the same set for so long is bound to create amazing bonds, and the original Avengers share a legacy that will probably live on forever. Fans will never forget the actors who started this amazing franchise and those who gave life to the best superheroes in comic book history. Additionally, this saga changed the way people perceived these stories.
What was once considered nerdy or geeky is now a vital part of pop culture, and it wouldn’t be the case if people as cool as Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson had not signed on for the project. In fact, Downey Jr. said that the tattoo idea was original Scarlett’s, and she went with Chris Evans to get it done in New York. The actor continued,
“Their New York guy, Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to LA, he did me, did Renner, and then we just bullied Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it.”
Unfortunately, Mark Ruffalo could not be convinced to get it due to his insane fear of needles, and the fact that he is “punk rock”. During an interview on ‘The Tonight Show’, Ruffalo explained, “I didn’t get a tattoo. I opted out of the tattoo.” He also added,
“First of all, I’m afraid of needles. So there’s that. But also I kind of have a punk rock soul. And I felt like ‘Dude, everyone has tattoos. I’m gonna be punk rock and not get the tattoo.’”
However, it seems that later on, the actor came to regret his decision.
“Honestly, I feel left out, and I’m working up the courage to get needled.”
During the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ press tour, the cast went to Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show, and he asked them about the tattoos and those who got it. Downey Jr. explained once again that Ruffalo had been against it, and Scarlett added,
“I guess he said yesterday that he’s afraid of needles, but he didn’t say that before, just made it, it seemed like he was really judgmental.”
The late night host found out hilarious that the actor couldn’t get the ink, adding,
“The Hulk is afraid of needles.”
As mentioned earlier, cast tattoos are not uncommon. The cast of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ got tattoos to honor their time on the films. The ink is a mix of the Avengers logo with the number “6” to symbolize the six original superheroes, but the design has other aspects as well. Fans of the franchise analyzed each detail, and Reddit is filled with explanations about it.
While it would be awesome to believe that so much thought went into the original tattoo, it is very likely that it was just the “A” and “6”. However, it’s great that it works the way some fans think, and that there is something about each character in it. After revealing their tattoo, many other people got it too as it is a pretty cool design. Check out other secrets from the set of 'Avengers: Endgame'.
It will be a great part of the original cast’s memories, especially now that so many of them are out of the MCU for good. In ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Tony Stark died and Steve Rogers went back in time to live his life with Peggy Carter and gave his shield to Sam Wilson. Meanwhile, Natasha Romanoff died for the Soul Stone, although she might return for a prequel film about Black Widow.
Hawkeye is apparently retired and living happily with his family after they were saved from the Decimation, and no one what will happen with Professor Hulk. It is definitely the end of an era. Some fans are hoping that Robert Downey Jr. should receive a special honor for his time in the MCU.
No one will ever forget them, and the tattoo is a great way to commemorate special moments. Let us know what you think about the design. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who also got some kind of Avengers ink. See you next time!
