Captain America Could Return On Screen According To Creators
After the premiere of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely sat down to talk and answer all the most pressing questions about the conclusion of the Infinity Saga in the MCU. Among the many queries, they were asked about the bittersweet ending of Steve Rogers’ storyline. However, fans might get to see him again in the future. But, how? Let’s find out!
FINALLY GOT HIS DANCE
After defeating Thanos, thanks to Tony Stark’s sacrifice, Steve Rogers was tasked to return the Infinity Stones to their respective timelines as Bruce Banner promised the Ancient One they would do. He also returned Mjolnir. He was supposed to come back five seconds later to the current timeline in 2023, but Steve never got back through the Quantum tunnel.
Instead, he appeared sitting lakeside on a bench and had aged considerably, meaning that he went back to the 1940s and spent his life with Peggy Carter. Steve brought with him the Captain America shield, which got destroyed during the battle with the Mad Titan and gave it to Sam Wilson, who should become the new Captain America in the MCU.
It was a great way to end his story without actually killing him, and actor Chris Evans has already said goodbye to the franchise. But, Christopher Markus doesn’t rule out the possibility of seeing Steve Rogers once again in the future. During an interview with Fandango, they were naturally asked about the endings for Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. Stephen McFeely said,
“Steve's arc is about trying to find some personal life, you know? Like he's been a man for others for so long, when does he get to be a man for himself? And how is that not selfish? How is that just earned?”
“[…] the natural end of those arcs seemed to be Tony laying down his life, you know, flying over the wire as it were, and Steve going and getting a life. So where we hit upon it was in order to become their best selves, Steve had to find a life, and Tony had to lose his.”
Later on, they were asked about the alternative timeline where an old Captain America existed and the younger one was saving the world. Markus answered,
“That is our theory. We are not experts on time travel, but the Ancient One specifically states that when you take an Infinity Stone out of a timeline it creates a new timeline. So Steve going back and just being there would not create a new timeline. So I reject the ‘Steve is in an alternate reality’ theory.”
He went on to say,
“I do believe that there is simply a period in world history from about '48 to now where there are two Steve Rogers. And anyway, for a large chunk of that one of them is frozen in ice. So it's not like they'd be running into each other.”
A “FUTURE” FOR STEVE ROGERS
The writers were also asked what their favorite part of the film was, and Christopher Markus said that it was definitely the ending scene. He added,
“Certainly seeing Steve reunited with Peggy at the end is, you know, that is literally full circle with our time in the MCU. You know, we did First Avenger, we did the Agent Carter show in the middle, and now we got them back together at the end, and it feels right.”
Unsurprisingly, Fans have wondered what Steve Rogers did from the 1940s to the present. It would be crazy to believe that he just stayed at home with his natural instincts to protect the world. However, if he doesn’t live in an alternate timeline as most people believe, then it would be hard for him to be out in the open when everyone thought he was dead.
But, Steve was part of another universe, then he could've continued his superhero ways. Although, Markus doesn’t feel like that is the case. He said,
“Possibly. I think maybe all I did was Steve was a stay-at-home dad and Peggy went to work at S.H.I.E.L.D. I don’t know that there were any adventures.”
Right there, Markus revealed that Rogers, in fact, had children, who possibly had the Super Soldier DNA, and that could be extremely interesting for the future. On the other hand, Joe Russo said that he believes Steve kept helping others even after retiring from being Captain America. Sadly, it looks like they have no plans for more adventures from Rogers.
However, we cannot lose hope because Disney’s new streaming service will be launched this year and several Marvel shows are premiering, which will be connected to the MCU. Maybe, in the future, they will decide to add more to Steve Rogers’ story and his family with Peggy. It might be animated, though, as Chris Evans might decline an offer to return to the Marvel Universe.
ANOTHER BURNING QUESTION
Another important farewell in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was Black Widow’s sacrifice for the Soul Stone, which not many people mention. That was incredibly surprising, mainly considering that Marvel is finally working on a ‘Black Widow’ solo movie. The writers were asked why they decided to kill her instead of Clint Barton. McFeely said,
“Well, you know the rules of the Soul Stone. So, of our group, I guess you could make an argument you could send Smart Hulk and Natasha. But we've always felt that the platonic love between Natasha and Clint is pretty evergreen. And when they get to that moment and he now has so much red in his ledger... we liked this idea that she was the last one on the wall, right?”
“So we've always thought that the most perfect conclusion to her arc would be to die for her new family, or to sacrifice greatly for her new family. We toyed with not doing that, and we had another version, and several women on the crew said, "Don't you dare take that choice away from her. The heroic thing is for Natasha to do it, not for Hawkeye to do it." And so we listened to that. Yeah.”
Despite the heartbreak, we agree with that it was her choice. Let us know what you think of Steve Rogers appearing once again in the MCU. If you liked this article, share it with your friends who cried for the entire 3 hours. See you next time!
