‘Avengers: Endgame’ Writers Unravel The Mystery Of The Soul Stone
The Infinity Stones are named after each characteristic of existence. The small oval-shaped Stones are six in number: The Mind Stone, Power Stone, Time Stone, Space stone, Reality Stone, and of course, the Soul Stone. Each stone endows the user with the ability to control whatever aspect of existence the stone stands for. The Infinity Stones are relatively easy to comprehend based on their powers and functions. This doesn't mean there are no perks when it comes to an understanding of how the Infinity Stones work. However, the Soul Stone is likely to be the most confusing of them all. Apart from its peculiarity in requesting for a soul before anyone can obtain the Stone, the effect of its return on the sacrificed souls seems unclear.
Fortunately, for fans who were left bewildered by activities that were involved with the Soul Stone in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ we have been given a detailed account on how the Soul Stone operates. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ screenwriters, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely have clarified the mystique of the Soul Stone. Read on to find out more!
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SOUL STONE IN ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME?’
Let’s take you down the memory lane about what happened with the Stone in ‘Endgame.’ Black Widow and Hawkeye travelled to Vomir in a bid to collect the Soul Stone. Hawkeye was able to obtain the Soul Stone after Black Widow offered to throw herself down the cliff. Later on in the movie, Steve Rogers -Captain America journeyed to the past to return the Stone to where it belongs.
‘ENDGAME’ WRITERS MARKUS AND MCFEELY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS
‘Endgame’ writers provided a satisfying revelation about the Soul Stone. Markus and McFeely disclosed during one of the latest episodes of CinemaBlend's ‘Hero Blend’ podcast that Captain America encountered no trouble while returning the Soul Stone. However, the soul sacrifice that led to Black Widow’s death wasn't reversed at that moment. Many fans had hoped that the exchange Black Widow and Hawkeye made with Red Skull (played by Ross Marquand), the keeper of the Stone would have brought her back to life when Captain America restored it.
“It's a good question. I think it is an everlasting exchange.”
While Markus added that it's more like "a slot," in which a person places a soul so that the Soul Stone can be obtained. McFeely promptly agreed, saying:
Sadly, this implies that just because the Soul Stone was taken back to Vomir doesn't mean those whose lives have sacrificed will be restored.
"It's like an old-time bank. It's a pneumatic tube."
Many viewers have speculated that Black Widow would be returned to life, the moment Captain America takes the Stone back to Vomir. However, according to the McFeely and Markus, this will never happen. This would also mean that Gamora cannot and will not be brought back to life.
"You put it back, but you don't get anything in return. It's not like a pawn shop."
Interestingly, the two writers expounded the way the Soul Stone works within a humorous manner. They compared the Soul Stone's keeper -Red Skull to a pawnbroker. And the whole settlement to an outdated bank, that expected customers to put their cash in a little tube and send it up into the building. Nevertheless, if they had explained in a more serious note, the takeaway wouldn't have been different.
We know now that no one can decide that they don't want the Soul Stone anymore, and hope that they will be given back the life they sacrificed to obtain it.
The transaction is permanent, and refunds are strictly unavailable. Based on Markus and McFeely’s theory, Captain America returning the Soul Stone only fixed the timeline; it changed nothing about the reality of Black Widow's death.
WHAT BLACK WIDOW'S DEATH MEANS FOR THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.
We believe that Black Widow's death will have a definite rebound on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is no news that Marvel Studios is presently working on a Black Widow solitary movie, which should have the superhero in it. Since Markus and McFeely have professedly affirmed that Black Widow will never be resurrected from death, it seems reasonable that the time setting of the forthcoming movie will be in the past. As expected, Marvel has been tight-lipped about the film, and about any other film coming after ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ this July.
If we are to solely accept Markus and McFeely’s explanation, that there is no way Black Widow can be brought back to life, then it is certain that the movie's timeline will surely be in the past. This suggests that it is impossible for Black Widow screenwriter -Jac Schaeffer to base the film beyond the years of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’
