Inside The 'Happy' Divorce That Prince Andrew And Sarah Ferguson Turned Into Their Favor

It's been over twenty years since the marriage between Prince Andrew and Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson ended. Still, their relationship gets attention down to this day. The Duke and Duchess of York are often the subjects of reconciliation talks. And although many royal family supporters have continued to hope that they would go back together one day, the pair are still separated, not just separated, but they are happily divorced. Here’s more on the unique arrangement Andrew and Fergie and why the latter thinks they are the “happiest divorced couple in the universe.”

Prince Andrew and Ferguson got married in 1986 and started to have marital issues, just before they had their first daughter, Princess Beatrice, in 1988. The problems had to do with Andrew’s naval profession as Fergie revealed that she nursed her first pregnancy alone because Andrew was constantly absent. In 1990, the couple had their second girl, Princess Eugenie, but two years later decided to separate.

About that same period, Ferguson generated headlines for her toe-sucking scandal in which she was snapped sunbathing topless with her feet in the mouth of business advisor John Bryan. She was still legitimately married to Prince Andrew at the time, so, it was a huge humiliation for the royal family and implied that the couple really had no other option than to separate. Thus in 1996, they divorced.

Following their breakup, sources released some details to The Sunday Telegraph of what Ferguson received in her settlement.

Fergie reportedly accepted to be paid monthly allowances based on Prince Andrew’s wage as a royal navy officer. She is also stated to have got about $1.8 million to open trust funds for Eugenie and Beatrice as well as another $462,000 in cash, and an arrangement that Andrew would take the responsibility of their daughters’ schooling.

Before Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank wedded in 2018, she and her sister lived together in an apartment at St. James’s Palace where they paid $25,000 as annual rent, which was always covered by Prince Andrew.

In an interview, Sarah Ferguson had this to say about her relationship with ex-husband Prince Andrew. ‘We are the happiest divorced couple in the world. We are divorced to each other, not from each other,’ she told journalist Frances Hardy, who spent 2 days with Ferguson to find out more about her. When Frances asked Fergie whether she is still in love with her ex-husband, she responded in a somewhat roundabout way;

‘We both say it. We are completely compatible. Our bywords are communication, compromise, and compassion.

‘July 23, 1986, was the happiest day of my life. Andrew is the best man I know. What he does for Britain is incredible; no one knows how hard he works for his country. My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will. The way we are is our fairy tale.

‘Although we are not a couple, we really believe in each other. The Yorks are a united family. We’ve shown it. You saw it at the wedding. We stand up for each other, fight for each other. We’re totally respectful of each other’s position and thoughts and we listen to each other. Our children listen to us, too.'

Despite all this mutual admiration, Ferguson is still forbidden from Christmas with the royals at Sandringham, but she confessed she still watches the coverage on television,

‘I will watch Ben-Hur and really enjoy it, then watch the news and see how the girls are doing. I know that Her Majesty adores my children, so I am happy to share them.’

One occasion she didn’t have to watch from a distance was the wedding of her daughter Eugenie early in October 2018. She won the public over once more with her relatable facial expressions, mischievous smile and emotional response to seeing her child walk down the aisle.

‘I always went to weddings and thought: “Why is the mother-of-the-bride crying?”’ she told Frances. ‘But I completely understand why now. It’s because it’s so amazing to think your daughter is now grown up, leaving home and starting her own life.’

‘I’d just sat down in the chapel and everyone saw me go “Phew” because I’d managed not to slip over in my high heels; then I looked across and saw my sister (Jane) and I watched her face and there were tears — and I’m doing it again, I’m welling up now.’

If you’re one of those people hoping that the Duke and Duchess of York could one day say “I do” again that isn’t very feasible, at least not now.

Many presume that one of the greatest reasons Prince Andrew and Fergie won’t remarry is because of Prince Philip’s dislike for his former daughter-in-law. Andrew’s father has held a grudge against Fergie for many years. He reportedly never pardoned her for the damage and embarrassment he feels she brought to his family with her topless, toe-sucking scandal. He loathes her so much that his son remarrying her is something he surely would not stand for.

“Why aren’t we married? Everybody says well then surely it should be the happy ever after ending. We are the happy ever after, it’s just not about marriage,” Fergie explained.

“It’s more about this extraordinary friendship we have. Andrew and I, we have a love which is unfathomable, it’s so great and the two girls [Princess Beatrice and Eugenie] love it. Should we be married? I don’t think we’re meant to be married. I think I am free and wild and going around, but nothing will take his place in my heart.”
