Prince Andrew And Sarah Ferguson Ignored The Protocol And Royal Tradition When Welcomed Princess Beatrice

Popularly known by her nickname 'Fergie,' Sarah Ferguson got married to Prince Andrew in 1986. Their royal wedding then was phenomenal. Come two years later, and the royal couple had their first child. Being a girl, they called her Beatrice. This name turned out to be a shocker for fans of the royal household as the name in itself is a very unusual one for a royal, then adding her other names made the whole combination kind of weird.

At that time, media referred to the Princess' name as a deviation from the typical tradition or manner of the royals. In the exact terms of the press, 'a departure from royal etiquette and protocol,' but how exactly did Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson break the law with their daughter's name?

THE OPINION OF SOMEONE FAMILIAR WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY

According to H.B. Brooks, who published 'Burke's Peerage,' Sarah was no stranger when it came to creating a trend that resonated across the universe. Everyone seemed to be interested in the affairs of royals of York, especially matters concerning Princess Beatrice, and it was not because of the exaggerations of print media. The truth was that so many young individuals were able to relate with the state in which Princess Beatrice found herself, mainly because of her name.

This trend of the Duke and Duchess of York, either intentional or unintentional, was also reflected in the fact that they went against the norm of six names for their daughter and opted for just three. This was indeed a trend-setting move considering the full name of the Duke, 'Andrew Albert Christian Edward.' If he had lengthy names, why wouldn't he give his daughter the same?

GOING BACK IN TIME TO THE ROOT OF THE NAME, "BEATRICE"

It looks like the young princess is not after all the first royal to bear her unusual name. There was previously a high-rank Beatrice in the history of the royal household before the birth of Princess Beatrice. The last daughter of Queen Victoria also bore that name. The beautiful dame at some point got married into the Spanish royal household, and as of now, she is the great-grandmother of the ruler of Spain.

Reports have it that the subtle act of the York royals naming their daughter after his great-grandmother holds a special place in the heart of the King of Spain. According to Brooks, the name Beatrice was selected by Prince Andrew and Sarah mainly because of the special regard they wanted to accord the King and Queen of Spain; they were the reason why felt welcome in the royal family.

A SIMILAR OCCURRENCE AMONG MODERN ROYALS

When you consider the recent happenings in the royal house as regards the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who just had a baby, there is quite a level of similitude. Archie Harrison Mountbatten also has no long royal middle names. He bears only three names like Princess Beatrice.

You would agree that many times, less is actually more. It was on May 6 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their beloved baby boy Archie. His full name was announced on the third day of his arrival. This was, however, in contrast with that of his elder cousin Princess Beatrice, whose name was revealed two weeks after her birth.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE BEATRICE?

For as long as one can think, the affairs of the royals have always been one to interest the world. Some fans even go as far as to predict the things to happen and place bets. Such is the case when it comes to the arrival of a royal baby, the gender and most of all, what his or her name would be. This was certainly the case for Archie as it was for Princess Beatrice.

It happened that so many bets were off when it came to the names, Archie and Beatrice. A lot of people were not keen on such names. Only those who had their noses in the royal history books were the ones to smile when the name Beatrice was announced. Going by the opinion of Graham Sharpe, the spokesman for William Hill, the nomenclature Beatrice did not even have one support punter.

Nevertheless, he still believes very much that the Princess Beatrice of York is the 'best thing that has happened to the royal family in a long time.' Surprisingly, the initial choice of name that Andrew and Sarah had for their child was not Beatrice or even close to it.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE APPROVAL OF THE QUEEN

The Queen is the head of the royal family. All decisions pertaining to the affairs of the Royals have to be vetoed by her eventually, and this a lot of times can cut short the expectations of the members of the royal family. It was reported that Prince Andrew and Fergie at first wanted their child to have the name, Annabel.

However, this unexpectedly did not go well with the Monarch who described it as 'yuppie.' Since Queen Elizabeth II oversees the official names for the royal newborns, it means all the names have to be stamped by the Queen, and the name Annabel was not approved. It was then the Queen suggested the name Beatrice in the stead of Annabel.

THE PRINCESS HERSELF DOES NOT MIND

One would think that anyone with the name Beatrice Elizabeth Mary might be forced to lead a very old and boring life. However, this is not the case for dear princess Beatrice. If anything, she is full of life! Take her love life, for instance; she has shown herself as the committed one. Though like every other human, Princess Beatrice has had her lows when it comes to relationships, she obviously does not let this dictate her life.

It also appears that she truly values her privacy. Her current relationship is a little over a year, and so far, the couple has only made an appearance together twice. Her interests have spanned over various charity organizations. Although Beatrice moved to New York City in 2015, she has been able to successfully juggle her full-time job as well as her personal life between New York and London.

Elizabeth Mary is ninth in the line of succession to the throne of the Queen of England with her sister, Princess Eugenie of York coming right after her. With no immediate picture of being Queen, the princess simply devotes her time to her profession and royal duties. The number of responsibilities is undoubtedly more than enough to occupy a royal for a lifetime. Her title alone already signifies the role which is expected of her.

It is obvious that regardless of what the name, Beatrice, sounds like or depicts, nothing short of elegance is expected of a royal. Luckily, Princess Beatrice of York hasn't failed to live up to the expectations of a royal proving it's not only the name that makes you a blue-blood. What are your thoughts on the name?  Do you think it is indeed unusual? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
