Inside Cameron Diaz's Marriage to Benji Madden Whom She Calls 'the Best Thing'
Previously one of Hollywood's biggest bachelorettes, Cameron Diaz made her mark in Hollywood way back in the 1990s. Although the actress is currently married (and expecting!) to rocker Benji Madden, there was a time when the actress was constantly making headlines for her romances and flings. Let's take a walk down memory lane, and see how the Hollywood star is doing today!
The actress started out young in the industry, at the age of 16. Once her successful modeling career took off, Cameron was soon traveling all over the world. From Paris to Japan, Diaz was landing magazines such as 'Seventeen,' 'Mademoiselle,' as well as famous advertising campaigns, including Calvin Klein, Levi's, and Coca-Cola.
Cameron was twenty-two years old when fame came rolling in with acting roles in movies such as "There's Something About Mary," "Charlie's Angels," and "Vanilla Sky." Being a former model turned actress, Diaz soon became Hollywood's it-girl for her girl-next-door charisma and comedic roles.
Leaving Hollywood Behind
After dedicating much of her 20s and 30s to acting and public life, the actress decided to take time for herself, and hung up her acting hat after she starred in the 2014 film, "Annie."
While she doesn't miss performing, Cameron leaves the door open to return to acting if she ever wanted to, but for now, she is rather tight-lipped about her future plans.
"It’s fun to just not have anybody know what I’m up to," Cameron told InStyle in 2019. "Because my time is all mine.
I’m not selling any films, and because I’m not selling anything, I don’t have to give anybody anything. I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life."
With a sense of gratitude, not only for the experiences she previously sought out in her life but also for the place she finds herself in now, Cameron wants to strengthen the relationships she has with family and friends that walk the path of life with her, including her husband, Benji Madden.
"Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me. My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner.
Marriage is certainly hard, and it’s a lot of work. You need somebody who’s willing to do the work with you because there’s no 60-40 in marriage. It’s 50-50 period. All the time," Cameron said.
However, although she might be family-focused now and has finally found a sense of stability, Diaz's love life wasn't always like this. In fact, the actress has gone through her fair share of drama and heartbreak before finding Mr. Right.
In 1995, Dillon and Diaz both starred in the hit movie “There’s Something About Mary.” The two stars eventually started dating, only to break up in 1998.
The actor opened up about their relationship ten years later and admitted that the only time he was ever in love, was when he was with Diaz. Dillon also called her his “muse.”
The actress and Jared Leto, the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman, started dating in 1999. The pair quickly got engaged in the early 2000s, but, unfortunately, separated just as quickly in 2003.
While the couple was still together, rumors were circling about Leto being unfaithful. However, Diaz denied them in an interview, and shared: “These stories hurt Jared more than they hurt me.”
Justin and Cameron met at the 2003 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. The Hollywood star presented Timberlake with the “Best Burp” award, which is where, supposedly, the two began to feel some chemistry. Although there were numerous rumors about them tying the knot, Diaz’s apparent fear of commitment, was what kept them from settling down.
After four years of dating, the two went their separate ways. The reason behind the breakup is unknown, but many believe it was either Johansson or Beil that came between them.
The separation resulted in bitter feelings between the ex-lovers, and they even famously had a “face-off” at a Golden Globes after-party. Alas, they eventually were able to put aside their differences and developed a good working relationship.
Not long after her breakup with Timberlake, Diaz’s love life was making the spotlight once again, with her rumored romance with magician Criss Angel.
Although they were spotted together numerous times, the pair denied that they were anything more than friends. However, at one of his shows, Angel gave a shout out to Diaz: “I’d like to dedicate this to my girl Trouble, aka Cameron. I love you, baby,” he said.
In 2010, Diaz and baseball star Alex Rodriguez went on a date. The two had an on-and-off-again relationship for a year, eventually calling things off in 2011. According to a source, Diaz was “hurt and betrayed, because she tried so hard to please him.”
In 2012, however, the baseball star talked about the actress and had nothing but nice things to say: “I don’t like talking about my relationships, but I will tell you about CD: She’s probably one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever met, and just an amazing light,” he shared.
Finding Her True Love
The couple made their union official in January 2015 after dating for seven months, and Cameron is happier than ever. Even those close to Cameron saw a change in the actress after she married Benji, as a source told PEOPLE that she found her equal in the rocker after dating hunks for years.
A man that respects her and makes her feel "so much better about everything." Apart from his band obligations, Benji co-owns the American clothing company, DCMA Collective with his brothers Josh and Joel, and their friend Tal Cooperman.
Initially established as MADE Clothing in 2005, the brothers changed the name to DCMA Collective the following year. Soon after, they added an online store with a product line that includes everything from hoodies to baby clothes, and in 2008 they added K-DCMA shoes to the list after they merged with K-Swiss.
Meanwhile, Benji also keeps busy with writing music for several television shows that include "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," and "The Voice," while he also made some appearances in front of the camera.
As for Cameron's current projects, she keeps fans guessing by throwing out some hints about her plans. "I like creating, so I’m just looking for the project that makes the most sense for me now," she said. "I have some things brewing, but it’s a little too early to talk about them."
More forthcoming about her view on the progression of technology, specifically social media, Cameron appreciates the ability to create one's own narrative when posting on these platforms, but it also has a downside.
"But you’re tied to your phone, and you’re so dependent on it. We’ve exported our entire brain capacity into this little thing we carry around in our hands. We’ve lost touch with our humanity and our humanness, and I think it’s really healthy to not have to be accountable for every minute of our day," Cameron explained.
However, Cameron does appreciate her ties to Benji. They have grown together, and Benji is often her rock and her friend with whom she has a beautiful romance.
The former actress also loves being in her 40s and the insight that came with four decades of experience. It gives her the ability to be honest and real with herself, and make any changes she deems necessary while looking forward to future possibilities with Benji Madden by her side.
Cameron's candid conversation about her career and relationship with Benji came a few months after her co-star on "The Sweetest Thing," Selma Blair accidentally let the cat out of the bag during an interview at Vanity Fair’s Oscar pre-party in March 2018.
Even though Cameron still receives scripts on a regular basis, none so far had been able to coax the former actress back to acting, and Selma explained that Cameron would probably never return to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.
She's finally expecting!
Cameron and her beloved husband are currently expecting their first baby! The news came as a heart-warming surprise since the couple has been trying ever since 2014. Evidently, the road to pregnancy hasn’t been an easy one: “They tried the old- fashioned way, but it just wasn’t happening,” added the insider. The 47-year-old, eventually resorted to IVF - and it was a success.
Now, the actress is glowing. “Cameron’s absolutely radiant! She can’t stop touching her tummy and could be hiding a growing baby bump,” an insider shared with the National Enquirer.
Another source claimed, “Cameron’s in total nesting mode. She’s stocking up on baby clothes and she’s even bought a copy of ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting.’ If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is.” The insider also shared that the celebrity ‘is getting advice from friends like Drew Barrymore and Nicole Richie, her sister in law.’
