However, he once denied paternity of one of his children, was largely absent from the child's life, creating a strained relationship. How does one of Hollywood's greatest actors create a bond with his kids, while being the subject of multiple romantic tell-all memoirs, with a reputation for being an "A-list womanizer"? Read on to find out!
THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IN HIS LIFE
The 63-year-old star has won many words, including two Academy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and one Emmy Award. For Kevin however, the most important role is fatherhood. He's most proud of being a father to daughters Annie, Lily, and Grace; and sons Joe, Liam, Cayden, and Hayes.
They are his children from three different relationships and range in ages from 8 to 34. These factors have made it difficult for the star and his children to maintain a healthy relationship. Attempting to manage a very demanding career as well as maintaining a bond with his children, who are very diverse in age and family structure, is challenging.
Despite the massive differences between his children's mothers and their ages, the actor works fervently in his relationship with each of them. Kevin and one of the characters he plays, John Dutton, are slightly similar, but the two are entirely different when it comes to raising their kids.
John is an intense character whose life is always tumultuous and dramatic. In reality, however, Kevin is a relaxed family man. He enjoys drama-free time at his Aspen ranch with his beloved family. But was Kevin always the family-oriented man he is now? Judging by his past relationships - not so much ... let's dive into his love life.
KEVIN'S FIRST MARRIAGE TO CINDY SILVIA
Surpisingly, Kevin found love at a young age. He married Cindy Silvia, a California State University Fullerton student. The pair began dating while they were in college. On their first date, the actor knew he was going to spend the rest of his life with her and took her to see his parents.
The actor told People: "I was just really proud that this girl would go out with me. I wanted to show my parents." Two years after, they tied the knot. Nine years later, the pair welcomed their first child, a girl named Annie. Two years after Annie's birth, their daughter Lily joined the family.
Their first son, Joseph, came into the picture in 1988, two years after Lily was born. Their home felt complete, and they had the family that everyone, seemingly, dreams of having. Soon after, though, cyclone of rumors about his extramarital affairs picked up speed. Unfortunately, the children couldn't keep Kevin and Cindy together forever as the duo divorced in 1994.
A SERIES OF FLINGS
It is rumored that in 1989, while married to Cindy, Kevin and Halle Berry were romantically involved. Neither Kevin nor people close to him have ever confirmed the rumors that he and the actress had an affair while he was married to Cindy Silva.
One year after the rumors about a fling with Halle Berry, the actor dealt with more tabloid headlines regarding his love life. This time it was a romance with Michelle Pfeiffer. And that's not even close to being the end of it ... Bobbie Jean Brown is another woman who claimed to have dated Kevin, as well.
She was a budding actress and model, and rose to fame in Warrant's music video, "Cherry Pie." Bobbie wrote a memoir about her life, and in the book, she revealed juicy details about the relationship with Kevin Costner. And she didn’t hold back! The book was called 'Dirty Rocker Boys: Love And Lust On The Sunset Strip.'
A woman named Peggy Trentini also wrote a memoir about her life, including her relationship with Kevin Costner. She called the book 'Once Upon A Star: Celebrity Kiss And Tell Stories.'In 1993, shortly before the divorce with his first wife, Cindy Silva was finalized, there were also rumors about an affair with Mira Sorvino.
The stories were flying that he had also had a fling with supermodel Naomi Campbell in the middle of the 1990s, and Karin Reznick. She is an actress and screenwriter and is known for her films from the ’80s like 'Her Alibi' and 'Clara’s Heart.'
In 1995, Kevin was seen on a date with Angie Everheart. She was an actress and model for Sports Illustrated, also appearing in a 2000 issue of Playboy Magazine. Also in 1995, Kevin was spotted at several places out on the town with Journalist Joan Lunden. Alas, the relationship was cut short because of the constant unwanted media attention.
After Kevin's highly publicized divorce from Cindy, he went on what some would call a dating rampage. He soon found love in the arms of Bridget Rooney. Bridget is a businesswoman whose family owns and operates the NFL team and franchise the Pittsburgh Steelers. She also made a movie in 2011, 'Zombie Or Not Zombie.'
After ending things with Cindy, the pair went public, and in no time, Bridget bore his child. Their son was born on November 15, 1996. Unconvinced the child was his, Kevin had a rocky relationship with Liam from a young age. Kevin only agreed to acknowledge that Liam was his son after Bridget forced him to take a paternity test.
After he and Bridget split, Kevin began dating yet again. This time he sparked up a relationship with Birgit Cunnigham, but the two didn't last very long. He then moved on to date model Elle Macpherson. As of 1996, the duo began living together. In a matter of months, things went south for both of them.
ANOTHER CHANCE AT LOVE FOR KEVIN COSTNER
Eventually, the 'Yellowstone' star became tired of failed relationships and decided to stay single for quite some time. That is until he met Christine Baumgartner. After his series of unsuccessful flings, Kevin encountered what has been labeled true love.
His new relationship with Christine Baumgartner consisted of four long years of dating. In 2004 the pair tied the knot at Kevin's 165-acre ranch in Aspen. However, the love birds, who have been married for 15 years, did not always see eye to eye.
The actor and handbag designer almost ended things for good while they were dating because Kevin didn't want to have kids. However, Christine told him that she would wait around for him to come back to his senses. All we have to say is that Kevin really got lucky this time ...
He confessed to Parade in 2012, "She said, 'I’m going to wait for you, but not long. When you come to your senses, come back to me. And I did." The pair are still together and have three beautiful children.
HOW HIS COMPLICATED LOVE LIFE IMPACTS HIS CHILDREN
However, due to the award-winning actor's complicated love life, things aren't always so easy. He once said in an interview that having three sets of children could be very difficult, but that he wouldn't have it any other way.
He explained that as his children interact together, there's always a little bit of, "Do you care for us now as much as you do them?' That's just a natural thing that happens, and you have to talk about how big love is." Juggling seven children, the actor admitted, can be tough.
The 'Hidden Figures' actor continued that he always reminds his older children not to get jealous when he gives more attention to their younger siblings. Kevin tells them that they have had more time with him and that he wouldn't be able to spend as much time with their younger siblings.
HIS CHILDREN ARE HIS PRIORITY
Although the father of seven sometimes struggles with his role, his children still remain the most important thing in his life. In 2015, when Costner accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 20th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, he thanked his children.
He paid tribute to them for turning his dream of becoming a movie star into reality: "All the years, all the tears saying goodbye at airports as I headed off to do yet another movie. Their brave faces trying to comprehend the time that I would be away and when I would come home".
KEVIN'S ROAD TO STARDOM
Kevin's bid to become an actor made him take acting classes five times a week during his studies at university. While he was still trying to make ends meet, Kevin settled for giving bus tours of star homes in Los Angeles.
After struggling to make ends meet, and taking jobs that'll merely support him financially, success soon came his way. The Hollywood icon's first movie was 'Sizzle Beach,' originally known as 'Hot Malibu Summer.' However, his career made a breakthrough when he starred in 'No Way Out' and played the role of Eliot Ness in 'The Untouchables.'
THE RISE AND FALL OF KEVIN COSTNER'S CAREER
Kevin starred in 'The Untouchables' in 1987 alongside Robert De Niro and Sean Connery. The movie catapulted him into the spotlight. The same year, he also starred in 'No Way Out.' Even though it wasn't as big as 'The Untouchables', it demonstrated his sexual appual - making him popular with the ladies!
Kevin then starred in 'Field of Dreams' in 1988, and it also made huge sales. In contrast to his other movies, the 1990 film, 'Revenge,' didn't create as much buzz as the first two. Critics explained that it felt like the role wasn't right for him. Another excellent move for Kevin career-wise was to direct 'Dance With The Wolves.'
The move ended up being a wise choice for the actor, as the film made over $200 million at the box office. However, the general belief is that 'A Perfect World' was the movie that started Kevin's decline in Hollywood. His next film, 'Wyatt Earp,' also didn't make many sales.
KEVIN ONCE GOLFED WITH TWO AMERICAN PRESIDENTS
Kevin had good relations with the government, including two past American Presidents. He once golfed with George Bush and Ronald Reagan. However, this wasn't the only way he shows his love for America. He even turned down a role in 'Platoon,' because he felt it didn't portray American soldiers in a good light.
KEVIN OFF SCREEN
Apparently Kevin is a die-hard fan of the soccer team, Arsenal. He once took an exclusive flight to see their league match in 2003. The '3 Days to Kill' star also enjoys horse-riding. He is great at the sport and even rode himself in the famous buffalo hunt scene in 'Dances With Wolves.'
If you've ever watched any of his older films, you won't be surprised whatsoever about the next juicy detail we've prepared ... There is no doubt that Kevin has an impressive body - its basically become common knoweldge. So, unshockingly, he was mentioned in Empire Magazine's list of the 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History in 1995.
The Hollywood hottie ranked No. 87. In the light of making records (although this might not be his proudest moment), Kevin also had one of the most expensive divorces when he separated from his wife, Cindy Silva. In 2007, their divorce was listed as the fifth most costly celebrity divorce with a settlement close to $80 million.
WHERE IS HE NOW?
Aside from focusing on his family, Costner's career is obviously on his list of priorities. And with so much experience and success under the actor's belt, it doesn't look like he's planning on stopping anytime soon.
His current role as billionaire rancher, John Dutton, in the show Yellowstone, has proved to be a huge success. The show ended up being a big hit for Paramount network, with season three being confirmed shortly after season two's premiere.
Even though he has a ton of experience, TV is a pretty new experience for the actor, considering his career has mostly been movie based. However, he's doing still an exceptional job, as fans are loving the new modern-day western show. And in an interview with CBS This Morning, the actor delved deeper into his understanding of the show's process...
The star was asked why he thought it was important for the show to focus on and dramatize the struggles that ranchers go through. The actor responded, "I didn't think of it that way. I tried to put the audience on my shoulder the first time I read the script."
He continued to explain in more detail: "You go to the TV; you go to the movies for something. When the lights go out, you want to just be transported. And so, when I read a script, I feel myself being transported – suddenly we're in Bitterroot Valley, the same valley that Lewis & Clark went down."
Considering all the hard work he puts into being a good father, while still maintaining his acting career, the actor is truly a man of many different talents. Despite his rocky past relationships, the family man seems to have settled down and is steadily leaving behind a stellar on and off-screen legacy.
