Woman Challenge In 'Remington Steele'
It was the year of 1982, when detective Laura Holt, who was not being taken seriously by her clients, decided to create a fake boss in order to gain some credibility. Thus, Remington Steele was born. All of a sudden, a new character comes into the scene and a love/hate relationship comes with it.
Back in 1969
The year was 1969 when television director, Robert Butler, had the idea for the show. However, according to Mystery Tribune, when Butler presented it to the head of MTM, Grant Tinker, he thought the idea was too ahead of its time.
After the outstanding success of other shows with female leads such as ‘Rhoda’ and ‘Mary Tyler Moore’, the two revisited the idea and decided to launch it. Ironically, the show that was initially intended to be an empowerment of women, ended up being remembered as the one where Pierce Brosnan became known.
Wait a Minute! It Was Canceled?
Yes, you read that correctly. For a brief moment, after its fourth season, the show actually got canceled. However, according to MeTV, after its reruns during summer it had such huge success producers decided to relaunch it for its 5th and last season.
Stars Were Almost Born
Stephanie Zimbalist and Pierce Brosnan were not quite happy about the fact that there would be a 5th season of ‘Remington Steele’ because, during their break, they had actually gotten great offers to play other parts that would have sent them to the stars.
According to the 80s Kids, Zimbalist was asked to play the role of Lewis in 'RoboCop', and, for the first time, Brosnan was asked to play the role of James Bond. However, they were both in a 7-year-contract with the show and could not be released from it. Brosnan got a second chance, Zimbalist on the other hand...
The Bond Girl
Even though the actor lost his first chance to play the role of James Bond, at the time, he was actually married to former Bond girl Cassandra Harris. The couple ended up getting a divorce just a few years after the end of ‘Remington Steele’, in 1991.
If you’re a pun lover, you’re going to love this one. According to Mystery Tribune, the writers and producers and the show were quite clever when it came to making up the titles for the show. Maybe you have even noticed it yourself.
The titles would revolve around the plot, just like in all shows. However, there was a plot twist. The name ‘Steele’ was in every single title of the series. It went from ‘Steele Crazy After All These Years’ to ‘You’re Steele The One For Me’. In one episode, they even managed to put the name of the two main characters together in ‘Red Holt Steele’.
Steelers Gonna Steele
Talking about puns, there was a writer named Glenn Gordon Caron who pulled a fast one on the show. According to the 80s Kids, he actually left the show to create a very similar but more up-to-date show titled ‘Moonlighting’. In 2007, the series was, in fact, listen on Time’s Magazine list of “100 Best TV Shows of All-Time".
The Pink Panther
For all the music lovers, here is a fact that you are going to adore. Henry Mancini, who is loved by many and known for his brilliant music, was the one to write the music theme for the show. He is also responsible for other famous themes such as ‘The Pink Panther’ and ‘Moon River’.
Doris Roberts Takes the Wheel
When the role Mildred Krebs, the secretary, was designed, the producers were looking for a young woman in her 30s. So when Doris Roberts showed up, they had to think twice. However, they decided they could only gain audiences with her in the show.
Before entering ‘Remington Steele’, she won an Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. With a career spanning more than three decades at the time, how could they not choose her for the role? She was perfect for it and almost won another Emmy award for her performance as Mildred in 1985.
What Do You Mean He Was Her Father?
Steele’s character made clear that he had never met his father. Later on, in the show, he finds out that Daniel Chalmers, played by Efrem Zimbalist Jr., is his biological father. Now, let’s look at this from a different perspective.
Steele and Holt were together, for all accounts, but if the couple were actually together in real life, it would mean that Chalmers would be Steele’s father-in-law, seeing that Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is the father of the actress playing the role, Stephanie Zimbalist. The two had quite a close relationship leaving Stephanie devastated after his death in 2014.
Brosnan Was Actually Rejected
For you to accept what we are going to say next, you need to keep in mind that, at the time, Brosnan was an Irish actor basically unknown in the USA. To think that someone would turn him down nowadays is crazy, but back then it was basic math.
According to Mystery Tribune, the actor was rejected when he first auditioned for the part. The producers had British actor Anthony Andrews in mind but for their misfortune, or luck - however you want to see it -, the actor refused the role. It did not take a lot for Brosnan to get the role after they met him face to face.
Steele’s Unknown Fate
At first, the goal of the show was to focus on the female power of the detective Laura Holt and Steele’s character was to be nothing but a comic relief from all the show’s intensity. However, as you might have noticed by now, Brosnan changed a lot about the series since the very beginning.
According to the 80s Kids, Brosnan’s acting had such a great impact on the audiences that the only smart move would be to increase his presence on the show. The actor quickly went from being a secondary character to a co-star and that was, probably, why a relationship between the two detectives was also developed with such bickering and love.

Brosnan, the Feminist
After stepping away from the role, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the former Bond believes it is time for a female Bond to take the lead. Even though he admits that his biggest achievement was most definitely playing the role of James Bond, Brosnan believes it’s time for a new generation of women Bonds.
According to the actor’s statement, it has been great that for 40 years different men have been playing the role but putting a woman in the role would bring a whole different dynamic to it and empower women. We believe he has a point, don’t you think it’s time for a female Bond?
