5 Finales With Different Emotions: 'St. Elsewhere', 'The Sopranos' and Others
Cliffhangers and confusing endings... Sometimes TV series finales leave fans going, "wait, what?!" We have gathered the five most controversial season finales, from The Sopranos to Will and Grace. Stay tuned for all the drama related to the shows that had some shocking mic drop moments!
5. Castle - The Finale That Left Us Wanting More
ABC's American crime-comedy-drama show was popular during its impressive run from 2009 all the way into 2016. But the series finale raised more than a few eyebrows. Creator, Andrew W. Marlowe, wrote the fantastic story of mystery, plot twists, and love wrapped into one.
The show follows a novelist and detective as they solve crimes and eventually fall in love. Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) portray their characters with excellence, so why then did the show end on a rather unexpected note?
Why Fans Were Unsatisfied
The final episode left fans unsatisfied, feeling as if there was unfinished business. The entire episode seemed a bit rushed and we needed more from the show we'd devoted so much time to! While the main stars did end up together, one fan's words perfectly sum up the end of Castle:
“Why?!! Why is it all over?! I don’t understand...”
The finale has been called a wreck amongst many unpleasant descriptives. After 8 seasons, fans felt they deserved more than a simple and uncomplicated finale for Rick and Kate. It was clear that the producers were trying to tie up the series with a standard "happy ending" narrative.
4. St Elsewhere - The Show We All Imagined
Joshua Brand and John Falsey's medical TV show, St. Elsewhere was a hit. The 80s series starred great actors like Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels. For six seasons fans followed the show as it earned 13 Emmy Awards and even featured on the "60 Best Series of All Time" list.
But the show shocked fans with its finale that made it seem like the entire series was the dream of a child called Tommy. The ending shows him looking into a snow globe which then becomes the hospital and setting of the series. Devoted followers of St. Elsewhere felt fooled and were not impressed.
St Elsewhere Was Never Really Real
The realization that the show they had given hours of their lives to, was actually just a figment of Tommy's imagination, was pretty disappointing. Many people have however pointed out that all series are in fact that; the figment of the series creators' mind... But still, the season finale hurt.
3. The Sopranos - A Finale That Had Us In Tears
David Chase created magic when he introduced the world to The Sopranos. As we follow Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco), Carmela (Edie Falco), and many other great acts, we are exposed to an intricate criminal world unlike before.
The show boosted many actors and actresses into stardom as the award-winning show developed. It also walked away with probably the most impressive ranking... It was ranked the best television series of all time by TV Guide! Why then did it's finale cause such a stir?
The Worst Cliffhanger Of All Time
Instead of giving devoted fans a conclusion to years of viewing, the show chose to end the series on a cliffhanger... And not just any cliffhanger but one that puts the protagonist in danger. As an unknown figure watches Tony from a restaurant bathroom, the show cuts to a black screen.
We never find out if the stranger kills Tony or if he simply continues to enjoy his meal. Many viewers actually thought their cable connections had cut! The end of a Soprano era left many people angry and dissatisfied. Some even had tears that this hit show pulled this stunt.
What The Show Creator Said About The Finale
Despite this, the intense mic drop finale was a classic David Chase move. The mastermind shared the following about the ending of The Sopranos:
“People still ask me what happened [in the final scene]. They don’t ask me if Tony is alive or dead. But I know that’s where it’s going. My answer is, if I was going to tell you that I would have told you.”
2. The X-Files - Fans Were Outraged By This Shows Ending
The X-Files changed what the world and America saw science fiction drama. Chris Carter's hit series was on the air from the 90s all the way into 2002. With a massive fan base and following the show saw 11 exhilarating seasons and a few TV movie spin-offs.
The show that covers crazy topics from aliens to various other conspiracies, became a unique form of entertainment. The lead stars, Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, and Mitch Pileggi, saw their careers boom thanks to the show but The X-Files producers were faced with backlash after the finale.
Why The Series Finale Wasn't Up To Scratch
Post-season 10 the storyline went up and down and when a final season came to being, it was all over the place. The plot shocked almost every fan of the series. Some of the biggest conspiracies that had been etched into the show were completely disregarded.
Fans React To The Final Episode
The finale of The X-Files recontextualized the original show and let down the massive fan base. Viewers took to Twitter to share their feelings and opinions. One viewer shared this:
"Anyone else as let down by #TheXFiles as I was? Because I might start a support group."
Another fan shared their own disappointment with the series finale by saying:
"Ugh... did #TheXFiles really just finish off their triumphant return with a full-blown *anti-vaccine* ep?! #ShockedAndApalled"
Why The Hardcore Fans Will Appreciate The X-Files Finale
Show creator Cris Carter was open to comment when his work was met with immense disapproval. He spoke candidly about why he wasn't unhappy about how he chose to end the series, indicating that fans who had been with the show from the beginning would get it. He said:
"I think that hardcore fans of the show just expect nothing less than this and I think—I hope—people aren't confused. I hope that it was not a confusing ending. If it was perplexing or alarming, I would prefer it to be that."
1. Will & Grace - The Series That Shouldn't Have Made A Second Finale
Max Mutchnick and David Kohan were ahead of the game when they created Will & Grace. The show tackled new topics that other sitcoms were shying away from. The story followed two best friends living in the concrete jungle of New York as they went through various stages of their lives.
Will Truman (Eric McCormack) stars as a gay lawyer in a time when there were few LGBTQ figures on the TV. Grace Adler (Debra Messing) is his housemate and works as an interior designer. The show was well-loved from 1998 to 2006 and beyond.
The Series Gets A Revival But Was It A Good Move
In fact, the series was such a hit that it received a renewal from 2017 to 2020. But the second finale was a far shot from the original ending. While fans were happy to see their fave stars again, it wasn't the same... A lot had happened since they went off the air in 2006.
The storyline fell short and tried to remake some great moments that have now been outlived. Will and Grace went down in series history as one of the best shows but the new revival didn't add to its legacy. If anything, it left fans with a few raised eyebrows and unimpressed remarks.
Why The Creators Changed The Story
Not everyone thought the finale was all bad. The show creators had their own feelings, stating that:
"This ending was a little bit more honest to the characters. We were making stuff up the first time around. And this felt like, the world had changed, we had changed, and the characters, therefore, were going to change."
What Fans Thought Of The Second Finale Of Will And Grace
Most fans were just sad to say goodbye to the series for a second time. Various viewers took to Twitter to share their heartfelt sentiments. One fan said:
“Going to miss you guys! Been watching #WillAndGrace from the beginning.. making sure I have tissues next to me Thursday Crying face #WillAndGraceFarewell”
Another Will and Grace groupie added:
“Tomorrow my all time fav show comes to an end... For the second time...”
Should NBC Air Old Seasons Of The Hit Show
The idea was also raised that NBC should air reruns of the original series. As this fan tweeted:
“How about @NBCNetwork airing #WillAndGrace from the beginning in the time slot they have now ?! I bet millions want to watch the show from the very first season 1998 Who agrees with me ?”
These shows certainly gave us a few unforgettable and chilling moments. From the shock of the season finale to the disappointment that your fave series was now over, we were left speechless more than a few times... But still, we'd watch them again in a heartbeat!
