Top Mistakes in 'The Cosby Show'
The beloved TV sitcom, The Cosby Show was on screens across America for more than 200 episodes. So it goes to show that there would be a few slip-ups... From crew mistakes to character confusion and plot holes, we have gathered all of the bloopers you missed in the 90s!
Do You Remember The Comical Cosby Family?
Co-created by and starring Bill Cosby, the show was NBC gold for eight hilarious seasons. It enjoyed success from 1984, all the way into April of 1992. Following the lives of an upper-middle-class African-American family, viewers gained insight into various social understandings.
Set in Brooklyn, New York, these chronicles were well-loved and ranked at number-one ahead of every other show on television for many years! In fact, they are one of only two series to ever rate at the top for five seasons! TV Guide actually called it:
"TV's biggest hit in the 1980s, and almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes."
20. What's That We See Peaking...?
The show was well scripted but it did have a few errors like this continuity mistake. Viewers can see Theo trying to prank Cliff with fake gum. This "Bag 'o' Gags" prank however brings us our first blooper... The green bag is under his shirt but for most of the scenes and we can actually see it.
The bag keeps moving and drops under his shirt for a while. It's pretty unmissable and the green stands out clearly, making for some awkward moments. In the next scene, the bag has suddenly disappeared from our view. So... we wonder why they didn't simply reshoot this scene again?
19. The Magical Dominoes
This episode ends with the main character, Cliff Huxtable in the living speaking to Russell, Sgt. Stokes, his dad, along with Homer. They are discussing events in Bermuda and he is using game dominoes to illustrate some of the storylines. First, we see around seven dominoes on their sides.
Then the shot goes to a new camera viewpoint and the dominoes look completely different. In fact, they are all lying down and the seven dominoes which were standing up a few minutes ago have magically fallen down... A minute later two of the men leave the room and we again see the seven dominoes upright.
18. The Family Does Not Have A Garage
In another instance of error, a character makes a mistake that only super sleuths will notice. Vanessa is asking her dad for money so that she can purchase a new CD. He then instructs her to do a chore for the money... She must clean the garage but the family lives in a brownstone townhouse, they never feature garages!
17. Wait, Who Was Clifford?
Some fans may be wondering who the Clifford character was from the beginning days of The Cosby Show... Well, Clifford and Heathcliff are actually one and the same! His name was altered later on and if you look closely, you could still see his original name on his office name tag.
16. Cliff & Theo's Clear Plot Hole
In a small but clear plothole, we see Theo complaining about all of the guests his father has invited to his graduation. He goes on to say that "I saw him in the backyard 5 minutes ago hosing down the beach chairs." However, this is impossible unless Cliff has some kind of super speed...
Why? Well, if you look carefully you will notice that Cliff was upstairs before that scene after which he comes straight into the living room. There would never have been enough time for him to go outside and hose down the chairs like Theo was explaining.
15. Theo Never Really Went To The Neighbors
Cliff has a chat with Peter and then tells Theo to run on over to their neighbors. While this happens off-screen, we can still see Theo in the background of the consequent shots. He is seen near the twins and very clearly not at the neighbors as we are made to believe.
14. The Incorrect Game Console
This simple factual error is actually pretty awkward... When Olivia shows Russell how one plays the Nintendo game she explains the console incorrectly... It is clear they are not using a real and current Nintendo as she speaks about "C and D" but the former Nintendo system doesn't feature those letters.
13. The Fake Wall
Often in theatre circles, people speak about imaginary walls but in series like The Cosby Show, we expect them to use real walls... So when Robert grabs Scott's shirt and he goes into the wall, it becomes clear that the wall is fake. Why? Well, the wall moves backward!
12. The Confusing Pencil & Notepad Scene
In the following continuity mistake, Pam talks to Cliff in the office. The sequence of the shots is out of sync as she first holds a pencil in her hand and a notepad on her lap. Then, the very next shot shows Cliff handing her that very same pencil while the pad still lies on his desk...
11. The Vanishing Foam
We meet Bob and Elvin as they hold some apple cider and another jar with foam on top of it. As Bob puts the jar on the table the foam has suddenly vanished... The shot soon returns to that same table scene and again, the foam has returned without any explanation!
10. The Trombone Versus The Trumpet
There has never been any clarity on which instruments Russel really plays on the show... We hear Cliff say, "a young trumpet player" yet, in every other episode we see Russel playing the trombone. There is never again a mention of a trumpet so it's a pretty clear blooper...
9. The House Is Not On The Corner Of The Street
In another continuity error, we see sweet little Rudy ride her bicycle around their home. We see that it happens to be the house on the corner of the street. Some fans can't help but wonder when the family moved to a corner house since this was never the case in prior episodes.
8. The Architectural Blooper
Many of the outside shots we are shown make it clear that the Cosby home is in the middle of various other houses, with homes on each side of them. How then does the living room have a window looking to the side of their home? Surely there would be a wall there!
7. From Day To Night In Seconds...
In a Father's Day episode we see Cliff and Clair talking in the day time. He gets a sweet gift for the special day which happens to be a light-up kind of present. When he turns off the light to see what his gift can do, the room goes completely dark. This would not be possible in daylight.
6. The Kitchen Looks Different
In season 8's episode 16, "Eat, Drink and Be Wary" we notice that the kitchen looks very different. The episode was clearly shot before they had renovated and redone the kitchen set up. It aired after viewers had already seen the new kitchen so it was slightly awkward...
5. We Can Hear The Crew Speaking
This audio blooper features Cliff and Rudy. The crew members are often behind the scene to give actors their word prompts or whatever else they may need. When Cliff asks Rudy who her boyfriend is, someone not in the camera shot is heard saying "Bud" before the actress actually says it...
4. The Eggs Give Away The Story
Cliff comes home from the shops with various groceries in his shopping bags. Then the eggs and the tomatoes fall out... Some super sleuths have thus asked why the eggs were not in a carton like they normally would be? Well, it's clear they were meant to fall and make a mess which would not be possible if they were in a carton!
3. The Disappearing Table & Lamp
In this revealing error, the sitcom's set gives away some things... We notice that as people open the front door there are only steps leading the way out. However, when they come in from outside there suddenly appears to be a table and lamp at the entrance which was not there before.
2. How Many Kids Do The Cosby Parents Really Have?
In the pilot episode, we see the children arguing and this prompts Claire to ask her husband, Cliff, "Why did we have 4 kids?" she is thus referring to Rudy, Theo, Vaness, and Denise. However, all of the consequent episodes mention that they have five kids, as they later brought in Sandra's character, their eldest daughter.
1. Accidentally Using The Actor's Real Name
In an episode where some of the characters take part in a race, a very humorous but clear mistake happens... All of the children are cheering on their dad, Cliff (played by actor, Bill Cosby). Then, if you listen closely you can hear Denise call her on-screen dad, Bill instead of "Dad" or "Cliff!"
Wow! There are really some funny bloopers on The Cosby Show! This series might have had a few flaws here and there but it was well-loved by many families across the country. Which character was your ultimate favorite? Leave us a comment and be sure to click the shares button!
