15 Things That Make Sam Heughan The Perfect James Bond
Daniel Craig's reign as the dapper James Bond has come to a close. No Time To Die is his final serving as the 007 character but that leaves an opening for the hero among heroes Sam Heughan. If you aren't convinced, take a moment to dive into the article as we motivate why the Outlander star is the perfect successor!
1. HE WAS SELECTED BY FANS
Outlander fans are calling for their beloved Sam Heughan to join the likes of Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan in playing the coveted 007 role. RadioTimes.com conducted a poll for the next actor to play James Bond and Heughan proved to be the champion, beating Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, and Idris Elba.
2. HE AUDITIONED FOR THE ROLE MANY YEARS AGO
In an alternate universe, Heughan very well could have been James Bond. The hot Scot revealed that he had actually auditioned for the part but the iconic character was ultimately given to Daniel Craig. He also shared that they were looking for a younger Bond. Sam is 13 years younger than Craig. Back in 2018, the actor recalled the experience:
"It was a pretty good experience," he said. "It's about time we had a Scottish Bond."
3. HE HAS ALREADY PLAYED A SECRET AGENT
Who would turn down a special agent with experience? We certainly can't. The star starred in The Spy Who Dumped Me alongside Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon. Heughan was challenged to execute stunts and fight scenes which were a lot different from Outlander. He'd be more than ready to hit the ground running as the famous agent.
4. HE'S THE PERFECT AGE TO PULL OFF BOND
Some fans may not know this but the James Bond films are based on a series of novels written by Ian Flemming. In the books, Bond is in his early 30s and barely ages however, most of the Bond men range from their 40s to their 50s at the latest. Sam Heughan is 40 years old which makes him the perfect candidate for the heroic figure.
5. HE'S OPEN TO TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM OUTLANDER
At this point we're all used to seeing Sam in a period piece but wouldn't it be nice to see him do something more modern? When the actor took on the action comedy film The Spy Who Dumped Me, it gave fans a new perspective on his abilities as an actor as well as a 21st-century look.
"You know it’s about doing different roles and this was a great opportunity to lose the kilt and the ginger wig. It was nice to put something else in, a little homage to James Bond as well, it was a lot of fun, " Sam explained.
6. HE'S ALREADY ACCUSTOMED TO FILMING STEAMY SCENES
One thing that Outlander and James Bond have in common is raunchy scenes. In fact, Outlander may arguably be a little bit steamier than romantic Bond scenes. The intimate moments between Claire and Jamie have given Heughan more than enough practice to perfect a scene with any Bond bombshell that may come his way.
But, even though it may seem easy to the viewers, executing a steamy scene is much harder than we think. Caitriona Balfe who plays Claire and Sam admitted that shooting intimate scenes can be stressful. Balfe recalled filming with her Outlander co-star Tobias Menzies as a 'nerve-wracking' experience because they barely knew each other.
7. HE'S SEXY AND LOOKS GORGEOUS IN A SUIT
It's hard to believe that the Outlander author Diana Gabaldon once referred to the actor as "grotesque." Her opinion has since changed as she even applauded his performance on the show stating: “That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart.” He immediately won over fans with his rugged looks and romantic character.
BritishPeriodDramas.com conducted a poll to find out who TV's sexiest British period drama actor is and guess who topped the list? None other than Sam Heughan! He received a massive 110,040 votes! That being said he isn't only appealing as a historical character, he still makes fans swoon just by wearing a great modern suit.
8. HE HAS EXPERIENCE SHOOTING ACTION MOVIES AND FIGHT SCENES
As we mentioned earlier, the actor is well accustomed to getting into a well-orchestrated fight. Apart from starring in The Spy Who Dumped Me, Heughan also starred in an action film called Bloodshot starring alongside the action icon Vin Diesel. The stars shared great action scenes together with Heughan playing the villain to the Diesel's hero.
"I trained as hard as I could. We rehearsed all of those fights over and over. A lot of them were practical, [they] were real. We did do a lot of wirework and choreography. We shot them over a couple of weeks, and then went for pickups as well, said Heughan."
In addition, Outlander actors spend a lot of time working on the fight choreography. In his role as Jamie, Heughan has been shot, stabbed, hung, you name it. Even though all of this can be daunting, the star actually enjoys doing the fight scenes.
9. HE LOVES WORKING OUT
Being a romantic lead in a riveting historical drama calls for the actor to keep in his best shape. He frequently works out, but particularly enjoys running. Being a film actor also calls for him to change his body according to character specifications. So, his commitment to working out further proves why he'd be a great asset for the Bond franchise.
"I enjoy training, it seems to be very prevalent in movies and television at the moment. They want a certain look and I love it, it's good fun, " the actor shared.
In fact, he loves it so much that he's doing his part to share the wonders of health and fitness for a good cause. The actor is the founder of the My Peak Challenge which is a fitness initiative that seeks to raise funds for the Bloodwise charity. The star also appeared on the cover of Men's Health South Africa and shared his fitness tips.
10. HE LEARNED TO RIDE A BIKE
One more thing the actor can add to his resume! Heughan earned his bike driving license from the Rutherglen's motorcycle driving school BikeRite Rider Training. An insider from the training facility shared his progress with Glasgow Live and it proves beyond a doubt that he's certainly equipped to take over from Daniel Craig.
"He's been absolutely brilliant. He's a very down to earth and approachable guy. He took his instructions well - as an actor he is used to taking direction!"
11. HE'S A PROFESSIONAL FENCER
007 has been caught in some unusual predicaments and you never know what skill might come in handy. So, just in case Bond ever needs it, Sam is a licensed fencer! He is also professionally trained to teach fencing. Outlander has plenty of sword fighting scenes so the actor has been asked about whether it helped in any way. His response:
"it’s a completely different kind of sword fighting. We dual... It’s very difficult. I had to train a lot, had to go to the gym a lot as well, so it’s been great fun, it’s been a real adventure."
12. HE HAS A VAST FANBASE
Charm is a basic characteristic of James Bond and Sam definitely has it. His fans are all sorts of people from various backgrounds, including celebrities. Tom Hank's wife Rita Wilson is a huge fan of his. During an appearance on The Late Late Show, she revealed how she and her girlfriends watched Outlander and loved Heughan.
The much-loved actress Andie McDowell is also a fan of Outlander, Caitriona Balfe expressed how much the star adores Sam during an Instagram Live Q and A. There you have it, Heughan has the Bond IT factor, do we need to look any further?
13. HE LOVES WHISKEY AND EVEN LAUNCHED HIS OWN BRAND
We all know Bond loves his martini's shaken not stirred but we don't see him turning down a good whiskey either. Heughan's love for good whiskey runs deep, he recently launched his own brand called The Sassenach. Fans of Outlander will recognize the name as Jamie fondly calls Claire Sassenach.
The meaning of the term is someone of English heritage. James Bond is British so there's another connection that works out perfectly. Sam Heughan also shared his love for creating the whiskey: "From day 1 of the project, I wanted to make it….I’m so so proud of every part of it."
14. IT'S TIME FOR A SCOTTISH BOND
Speaking of Bond's nationality, the film series hasn't featured a Scot representative since Sean Connery. Sam Heughan agrees that it's about time we had another Scottish 007. Scots also have a reputation for doing an excellent job of portraying the character. In RadioTimes.com poll, Sean Connery was voted the best James Bond ever!
15. IT'S HIS DREAM JOB
Since he has auditioned for the role in the past, it's obvious that he would love to be James Bond. Sam's also admitted that it would be a dream job for any actor. Not to mention, the project requires an actor to sign on for a consecutive amount of years, Heughan is accustomed to this as Outlander films every year for 10 months at a time.
