THE WRITERS BEHIND THE BOOK

Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand made their way into the tabloids once the rumors of the book being written were revealed. The authors, who have conducted over 100 interviews with "those who know Harry and Meghan best, close friends and even Buckingham Palace aides” have released their book to the enjoyment of all royal family fans.

Even though there were some claims that both Meghan and Harry took part in the writing of the book, Scobie has since come forward denying all allegations. An official statement also indicated “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom. This book is based on the authors’ own experiences [...]"

PRINCE HARRY: HIS MOTHER’S SON

The book comes with an easy confirmation: Prince Harry is 100% his mother’s son. “Finding Freedom” comes as a step-up to the book about Princess Diana by Andrew Morton, “Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words”. Released in 1992, the book shared insights into the Royal Family, and 28 years late, the same happens again.

WHAT DID WE FIND OUT ABOUT THE ROYAL COUPLE?

While the book didn’t make it to the shelves until August 11th, 2020, many excerpts have been released prior to that date. Scobie and Durand have released certain parts of the book as early as July to the newspaper The Times. But, now that the book is flying off the shelves, what did we find out about the Sussexes?

THEIR LOVE LIFE BEFORE MEETING

The book, "Finding Freedom", stated that Meghan shared with her friends she didn’t believe her first husband, Trevor Engelson, was supportive of her when it came to her acting career. In fact, it can be read that Engelson apparently wanted Meghan to be fully dependent on him, which might have been the cause for the couple to split in 2013.

“‘He was used to being the breadwinner, the one Meghan needed for introductions in the industry,’ said a friend of their early courtship,” the book reported. After the split, Meghan was in a relationship with Cory Vitiello for two years, but that came to an end after the Duchess met Harry.

PRE-MEGHAN: WHO DID THE PRINCE DATE?

Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas were the most notable girlfriends of the prince. The book described that "Part of the reason he fell hard for his first serious girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, was that she loved adventure as much as he did, and she was not overly impressed with his royal pedigree [...]”

Harry and Chelsy were together for seven years and shared a passionate and troubled relationship. Once the couple separated, Princess Eugenie introduced Harry to Davy, who was the prince’s girlfriend between 2012 and 2014. However, the couple would eventually break up, thus making way to Harry and Meghan to be together.

MEGHAN AND HARRY’S FIRST DATE

The royal couple met during a blind date, which took place at Soho House's Dean Street Townhouse in London. According to a source, Harry and Meghan chatted over drinks for three hours but ended up going their separate ways after the date, without any kiss.

"Almost immediately they were almost obsessed with each other, it was as if Harry was in a trance.", a source commented to the authors. The night after, the soon-to-be couple had dinner at the same place, and apparently a friend of the couple mentioned that "Harry knew they would be together at that point. She was ticking every box."

“I LOVE YOU”, WHO SAID IT FIRST?

After several secret dates, flights between Toronto and London, and three months of a passion-fulled relationship, the royal couple finally said those three magic words. According to “Finding Freedom”, Harry was the first one to drop the bomb, but Meghan immediately replied, "I love you too."

THE ROYALS ALSO LIKE SOCIAL MEDIA

Many people might think that the rich and famous can’t have social media accounts, but the truth is that they do, but keep them secret. After Meghan and Harry’s first date, she started following Instagram’s @SpikeyMau5 account, which sported a profile picture of a mouse-shaped helmet.

The book reveals that this is, in fact, Prince Harry’s secret Instagram account. The profile, which has since been taken down, used a mash-up of the prince’s nickname “Spike” and the name of one of his favorite DJs, Deadmau5. We can only guess what the Prince has shared on his account, and who he was following!

THE NECKLACE THAT KEPT THE JOURNALISTS COMING BACK

Meghan was seen in public wearing an Ani + Wren 14-carat gold chain bearing the initials "H" and "M." At the beginning of their relationship, this made the headlines and even sparked some drama within the Palace’s walls. According to the book, palace aides advised Meghan to not wear the necklace, but she didn’t seem to listen to them.

"She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images — and new headlines," the authors wrote in “Finding Freedom”. However, despite the blowback from the royal aides, the Duchess of Sussex kept showing her love for Harry in the form of the necklace.

BROTHERLY ADVICE: PRINCE WILLIAM’S COMMENTS ON THE RELATIONSHIP

According to statements from the new book, Prince William was not too adamant about the newfound love of his younger brother. The book states that William told Harry "Don’t feel like you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl", which only made Harry upset for calling Meghan “this girl”.

Another source of the authors commented that Harry was upset his problem would make those comments. “Some felt it was an overreaction.” the source went on to add, “But then, this totally sums them up as people—William the calm and rational one, and Harry, who can’t help but take things far too personally."

MEETING WILLIAM AND KATE

Much has been written about how the two royal couples don’t get along, however “Finding Freedom” stated that it was not all bad. According to the book, William mentioned that he “was looking forward to meeting the girl who has put that silly grin on my brother’s face."

The two Duchesses met when Kate and William visited Kensington Palace, however, even if in the book it mentioned that Kate is an "extremely guarded person", both of the women seemed to get along. Kate and Meghan have since eased the tension between the two, mostly due to Meghan’s love for Princess Charlotte.

WEDDING TIARA: THE DRAMA

One of the biggest feuds mentioned in the book is related to Harry’s difficult relationship with Angela Kelly, the Queen’s longterm dresser. According to the authors, Harry felt that she was deliberately trying to be unhelpful when it comes to Meghan’s choice of tiara for the royal wedding.

PULA: THE ROYAL DOG

Soon after the royal wedding, Harry and Meghan adopted a black Labrador into the family, but the pup’s name has been a mystery for quite some time. It was only with the release of the book that the followers of the royal couple found out about the true name of the dog: Pula.

The authors of “Finding Freedom” confirmed that the royal dog was named after the official currency of Botswana. Harry and Meghan had one of their first dates in this African country and decided on the name as it means “rain” in Setswana, which is considered a blessing in the country.

FROM HOME BIRTH TO HOSPITAL BIRTHING: WHY MEGHAN CHANGED HER MIND

"I know there were stories about a home birth, and it was certainly something that was discussed early on, but Meg knew it would be a hospital birth for a few months. All she cared about was having the baby in the safest way possible," the book revealed about the Duchess birthing plans.

The couple’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born in a hospital in London, and according to some sources "She was more and more nervous as she approached the due date, so I would say in some ways it was a relief for her to be doing it in a traditional hospital."

ARCHIE’S EXPERIENCE WITH NANNIES

The Sussexes hired a night nurse to take care of their child Archie, however, she only lasted two nights. According to “Finding Freedom”, the nurse was let go for "being unprofessional and irresponsible". The couple went on to hire a second night nurse, but "neither found themselves comfortable sleeping through the night without going to check on Archie regularly."

HOW A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT BECAME A DREADFUL EXPERIENCE

Finding Freedom”, which mainly focuses on Meghan and Harry’s life at the Palace, also gave some insight into how the two royal brothers handled a photoshoot. An official picture from the 70th birthday of Prince Charles, where he is seen with his wife, two sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, made it into the book.

"The boys can be hot and cold with their father," a source told Scobie and Durand, and even went as far as commenting that planning the photo shoot was "an absolute nightmare". In the book, the authors continued that "Neither William nor Harry made much of an effort to make themselves available.”

LEAVING BUCKINGHAM PALACE

The book also sheds some light on the couple’s decision to leave their royal duties behind, in the pursuit of a “normal life”. However, even though the authors might have wanted to get the record straight about the decision of the couple, it does lack information as to why the Sussexes choose to leave.

STRIPPED OF HONORARY MILITARY APPOINTMENTS: THE DECISION THAT BROKE HARRY’S HEART

According to a source of the book, when Harry was removed from his honorary military appointments, his wife took it as a "tough pill to swallow, and the one that has been the most painful for Meghan to witness him go through”. The source continued that “It's the one that made Harry emotional."

"It was so unnecessary, and it’s not just taking something away from him; it’s also the entire military veteran community. You can see how much he means to them, too. So why? The powers [of the institution] are unfortunately greater than me", Meghan then told a personal friend about how she felt about the ruling.

WHAT HAS THE PUBLIC SAID ABOUT THE BOOK?

The feedback hasn’t been solely positive, even though the book was much awaited. Some people went on to Amazon UK to share their thoughts. A reader commented “Confused who wrote this… Biographical autobiography written in the style of Mills and Boon. Sugary love triumphs over adversity story that will be loved by people who love the woke couple [...].”

Another Amazon user stated, “I also find it rather poor that the authors are adamant that neither Harry nor Meghan assisted with this book yet there are some very very personal details that could only have come from either the couple or very very close friends”. I guess that in order to find out we will have to read it!

NOT ALL REVIEWS ARE BAD!

According to Royal Correspondent, Jonny Dymond, "Reliable, quotable sources are the hard currency of books about royalty. And Finding Freedom is quite well sourced. The authors have leaned heavily on contacts in the different courts - Buckingham Palace for the Queen, Kensington Palace for William and Kate, 'the Sussexes' for Harry and Meghan.”

“They have spoken to at least one person, maybe more, who feels he or she can speak for, and at times quote, Meghan herself, and at least one friend of Prince Harry who feels he or she can do the same.” Dymond also commented that it “paints [a portrait] of a couple at the center of a terrible whirlwind”.

THE AUTHORS' PERSPECTIVE

In an interview with The Independent, Scobie came clean about the main goal of the book, "Our intention isn’t for people to necessarily change how they think or feel about the couple. I just hope that the book adds another angle to this story [...]”.

Scobie hopes that readers get “an insight into how the couple dealt with things behind the scenes and how their emotions [were] at play. It’s very easy to forget that these big characters we see in the media are also human beings. I really want this book to offer people a deeper understanding of what it is that drives them [...]"

As with any news or scandals revolving around the Royal Family, it is expected that the Palace makes an official statement about what is revealed in the book. We just need to wait to see what the Crown has to say about it!
