At 54, This Is Where Scottie Pippen Lives
Born on September 25, 1965, Scottie Pippen has made a name for himself in the sports world, and together with Michael Jordan let the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles. Having been named one of the NBA’s greatest players in 1996, Scottie has become one of college basketball’s best players and was selected fifth overall in the 1987 NBA draft. But what has be been up since then?
THE TALLEST IN THE FAMILY
Born in Scotty Maurice Pippen in Arkansas, he was one of eleven siblings. His mother, Ethel, was 6 feet tall, and his father, Preston, was 6.1 feet. All of the couple’s children were quite tall, but Scottie took the lead in terms of height.
FROM POVERTY TO FAME
His parents lived a simple life, and unfortunately couldn’t afford to provide their children with a college education, but that didn’t stop Scottie from making it happen. Pippen attended Hamburg High School, where he played as a point guard and led his team to the state playoffs. Even though he earned honors as a senior, he was not offered a college scholarship.
WALKING INTO COLLEGE
Scottie’s career began at the University of Central Arkansas, shortly after being discovered by the school's head basketball coach, Don Dyer. His game averages as a senior made him earn the Consensus NAIA All-American honors in 1987, and thus a dominant player in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference, which led to the NBA keeping an eye out for him.
His talent, ability, and wingspan made him one of the NBA’s favorites, and in the 1987 NBA draft, the Seattle Supersonics selected the forward with the fifth overall pick. This was the first step into recognition for Pippen, who just a couple of weeks later was traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he teamed up with Michael Jordan.
Pippen and Jordan became an unstoppable duo and led the Chicago Bulls to the first of three consecutive NBA titles. The dream duo kept roaring and the team won six NBA titles in total, over a span of seven seasons. Even though the media used Jordan as the poster boy, Pippen’s versatility and skill were as vital to the club.
1992: THE DREAM TEAM COMES ALIVE
The first Olympic basketball team makes its way to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, and Pippen, Jorgan, Magic, and Larry Bird, along with other big NBA names, win the gold medal for the US. In 1996, Pippen once again scored the gold in the Atlanta Summer Olympics.
THE END OF A DREAM
During a couple of seasons, Pippen played with the Houston Rockets and the Portland Trailblazers, however, he opted to return to Chicago for the 2003-2004 season. This would end up being his final year playing in the NBA. During his almost two-decade-long career, he was a seven-time All-Star and eight-time member of the NBA's All-Defensive First Team.
BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
Scottie Pippen was enshrined as part of the Class of 2010 into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. During his speech, Pippen thanked those who helped him become who he is today, including his presenter Michael Jordan: “What an honor it is for me as a basketball player to have the all-time great presenting me here tonight.”
He added: “It was so valuable to me as a player to see someone who had the same desire, determination, passion, and love for the game. [...] MJ, you have touched so many people’s lives, but none like mine. Thank you for being the best teammate; I will always cherish that experience and I will cherish our relationship forever.”
SCOTTIE PIPPEN’S LOVE LIFE: NOT AS SUCCESSFUL AS NBA
Scottie has made a name for himself as a dream player in the NBA, but the same can’t be said about his personal life. To this day, Pippen has been the father of eight children, and his dating history is a long and detailed one. However, there have been four women who took the all-star position in his heart.
Pippen’s relationship and marriage with Karen was a roller coaster. They had a son together in 1987, named Antron Pippen, and one year later they decided to get married. However, it did not last very long as Scottie had some loose ends on his side, namely the fact that he was dating other women when they tied the knot.
The couple eventually split up two years after the wedding, which allowed Scottie to follow his romantic interests with other women - something that he was lacking when he was married. His son, who is now 32 years old, has followed his father’s steps into the basketball world. Keep reading to see if he is as good as his father!
The all-star son started playing basketball for Texas A&M International University, and soon after signed with the Upstate Heat team of the World Basketball Association. Even though Antron never made it to the NBA, he is still playing for a local team in Atlanta, where he also works as a machine technician.
Shortly after Karen’s and Pippen’s divorce, the basketballer started dating Sonya sometime in 1993. Just like before, Pippen didn’t wait much longer to announce that he and Sonya were expecting twins. Tyler and Taylor were born on July 20th, 1994, but their lives didn’t start out easy.
Scottie’s initial approach to the twins was to deny any responsibility and state he was not the father, however, a DNA test proved that he was. Pippen then pulled his sleeves up and took on the responsibilities for his two new children, however, unfortunately, Tyler passed away just nine days after being born.
Taylor focused on volleyball, having won the National Volleyball cut, and graduated in accounting with a minor in marketing from Southern Illinois University. When asked about her relationship with Scottie, she said "I don't know what he's like as a father. He never wanted to meet me. He decided that, and I prefer not to think about it too much."
YVETTE DE LEON
Scottie was never a person to stay single for too long, and once he met Yvette the two fell in love and soon got engaged. On February 17th, 1995, Yvette gave birth to Sierra Pippen, but the family didn’t stay together for too long.
The couple split up after an incident of domestic violence for which Pippen was arrested. Yvette took Pippen to court in order to demand him to fund his child’s support, which he denied. He eventually settled the matter by paying a huge amount of money. But as they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
Sierra has had a couple encounters with the law, following some of her father’s footsteps. She was charged with public urination and intoxication after being arrested at the Sheraton Hotel in Iowa, and two weeks before that she was also arrested there due to getting into a fight with a staff member from the Hotel.
The same year that Sierra was born, Scottie began dating Larsa, who had just graduated from college and was aspiring to become a model and actress. When Larsa was 22 years old, she and Pippen got married, and the couple stayed together longer than he had ever been with another woman.
For twenty-one years, the pair were happily married but eventually agreed in getting divorced in 2018. From their relationship, the couple had four children: Scotty Jr. (2000), Preston (2002), Justin (2005), and Sophia (2008). Pippen has an estranged relationship with Larsa but seems to be quite close to his children.
SCOTTY PIPPEN JR.
The oldest kid from Pippen’s last marriage has been making a name for himself playing college basketball for Vanderbilt, but his career started before that. Scotty Jr. played high school basketball in Los Angeles, where he was named an All-Area Team by the Los Angeles Times.
Preston is currently a recruit of the 2021 class at Sierra Canyon High School, where he plays basketball in the guard position, following his dad’s footsteps. His friends’ group will probably also be making the Hall of Fame, as he is close friends with Shaquille O'Neal's sons Shareef and Shaqir, and LeBron James' son LeBron Jr., Bronny.
Mixing his dad’s skills with his mother’s looks, Justin is both playing basketball as well as modeling for certain campaigns. He was part of a project called “Faces of the World”, which showcases portraits of children with upbringings that are outside of the norm.
Sophia, unlike her older brothers, has chosen the path of modeling, and signed with Wilhelmina Models. The young girl has also made her debut on the screen when she competed on Dancing with the Stars: Juniors in 2018, but unfortunately, she was eliminated before the final.
SCOTTIE PIPPEN’S ON “THE LAST DANCE”
“The Last Dance” is a documentary series that follows the legacy left behind by the Chicago Bulls’ Dream Team. But much has been left in the air, especially since Pippen has been quite silent about his representation on the series. Being a proud, gentle, and soft-spoken individual, Pippen seems to have gotten the shortest straw in the draw.
Rodman has mentioned that Pippen should have been remembered as one of the best players of all time, "but no one could ever quite see him. He was too quiet, and he was always standing next to Michael Jordan." He continued that "Scottie was so underrated -- and so underpaid. He should be holding his head up higher than Michael Jordan [...]”.
LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT PIPPEN
Even though many reports have been made about Pippen, some things usually are kept in the dark. For instance, he was nicknamed “No Tippen’ Pippen”, as he almost never tipped in restaurants. In fact, Sports Illustrated called Pippen one of the three biggest ‘skinflints’ of the NBA in an issue in the 90s.
One of the reasons why Pippen was never offered a scholarship was due to his heigh standing at 6'1" in high school. Luckily, during his senior year, he experienced a 7-inch growth spurt, which allowed him to earn a post in the team and become the amazing player we all know today.
WHAT IS SCOTTIE UP TO KNOW?
At 54 years old, Pippen is an analyst for ESPN’s The Jump. Before that, he was working as a special advisor to the Chicago Bulls, however, the NBA star reported that he was fired from this position back in February. “I got fired this year. I didn’t really want it to be in the public,” he told TMZ Sports.
The NBA All-Start certainly has made a name for himself, and we can only imagine how much more famous he would be if he was confident and outspoken enough to speak up about his rights. Nonetheless, Pipper will forever be remembered as one of the best players in the world.
