The Cast Of Hangin' With Mr. Cooper: Where Are They Now
If you were growing up (or already grown) during the 90s, then you are no stranged to TGIF’s line up that made our Friday evenings something to look for! The hit series “Hangin' With Mr. Cooper” was one of the favorites of the viewers and one of ours too! Over twenty years have passed since the series ended, so where are the cast members now? Let’s have a look!
WHO WAS MR. COOPER?
Following the life of Mark Cooper, an NBA star that becomes a teacher and ends up living with his friends, the show was quickly a hit. Even though it was smashed between two of the most viewed shows of Friday nights, the humor of the show made it one of the people’s favorites.
Mr. Cooper has to deal with coaching, teaching, trying to pay his bills, while also being involved in the struggles of the neighborhood. His positive outlook on life and the advice he gives to those around him make him one of the most lovable characters on television. The sitcom’s cast was funny and witty - where are the cast members now?
MARK CURRY / MR. MARK COOPER
After the show, Mark Curry returned to stand-up comedy, having done some small stints on television and the movies over the years. He took a small role in “Armageddon”, as well as having some small credits in Disney Channel movies. Probably the comedic genius of the show, Curry’s personal life took a hard turn.
In 2006, Curry had a near-death experience, having been involved in an explosion in his laundry room. “After the accident, it was comedians who called me. It was Sinbad on the phone making me laugh. Martin Lawrence called, the Wayans brothers. When Bill Cosby calls you, jokes with you, it inspires you,” he commented.
HOLLY ROBINSON PEETE / VANESSA RUSSELL
Holly kept on developing her career in acting after leaving the show, and you can see her in shows such as “For Your Love”, “One on One”, “Like Family”, “Mike and Molly”, among many others. In 2012, Holly also made a short appearance in “21 Jump Street” alongside Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
Holly has founded an organization with the aim of raising awareness for Parkinson disease - The HollyRod Foundation. Her father was diagnosed with Parkinson, and the couple’s son is within the autism spectrum, so the two are very passionate about helping others who are in the same situation. The actress also wrote some award-winning books, so she seems to be fine!
DAWNN LEWIS / ROBIN DUMARS
After the show, Dawnn’s career slowed down a bit, especially in regards to television. She took on some good roles in voice acting instead, having been credited for her work in “Spider-Man”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “The Cleveland Show”, and “Futurama”. She did some small roles in “One Tree Hill” and “Days of Our Lives”, but her TV career didn’t evolve.
In 2006, Dawnn took on to the stage and performed in Peter Schneider’s “Sister Act The Musical”, and her passion for voice work has led her to release her own music. During the same year, Dawn announced her debut album “Worth Waiting For”, but her true passion was voice work, which she has been doing until now.
NELL CARTER / PAMELA PJ MOORE
After “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper”, Carter went on to experience quite a few highs in her professional career. Her role in Broadway’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’” landed her a Tony Award, and after she took part in the television version of the same piece she went on to win an Emmy Award.
Unfortunately, her personal life was not as good, having dealt with parental abuse, an unplanned pregnancy, assault, and addiction, Carter also suffered from two brain aneurysms and diabetes. Luckily she had friends who supported her, such as Liza Minnelli, managing to come out on the brighter side and have a fruitful career.
MARQUISE WILSON / TYLER FOSTER
Being a child actor in Hollywood is never easy, and many don’t manage to have a successful transition into adulthood while maintaining their early acting skills and recognition. The same happened to Marquise, who after leaving the show stepped away from the screen and moved into music production.
He still tried out his luck in acting, with some single-episode appearances in television series such as “NYPD Blue”, “Six Feet Under”, as well as doing some voice work. However, he opted to move into other business endeavors such as starting up a clothing company called Canna-Wear, and working with Victory Productions.
RAVEN-SYMONE / NICOLE LEE
Making her big break at Disney Channel, Raven-Symone went on to become one of the most successful members of the cast. With a career that has spawned for more than three decades, she’s best known for her big-time-hit “That’s So Raven”.
She has also taken some credits in other very notable projects throughout her career, from doing voice work in the children’s shows “Kim Possible”, “Guardians of The Galaxy”, and “Tinkerbell”, she also took part in Eddie Murphy’s “Dr. Dolittle” film series. Raven-Symone was also popular due to her role on “The Cheetah Girls”.
SANDRA QUARTERMAN / GENEVA LEE
Like other members of the cast, Sandra Quarterman’s career slowed down, and eventually, she stopped acting. After being part of “Hangin’ Wit Mr. Cooper” as Nicole’s mother, Quarterman made some appearances on “The Practice”, “Touched By An Angel”, and “Strong Medicine”.
Her most famous role after the sitcom was in the series “Strange World”, which was produced by Howard Gordon, the same person responsible for the famous “X-Files”. Her acting career ended after she played Dr. Shannon Feller on a single episode of the television series “Without a Trace”. Maybe she will make a come back in the future!
OMAR GOODING / EARVIN RODMAN
Goodding is a name that is easily associated with entertainment, so it was expected that Omar would follow his family’s footsteps and keep on developing his acting career. He went on to make appearances in a series of television shows and movies. The most remarkable titles he was part of are “Smart Guy”, “The Division”, and “One on One”.
Throughout his career so far, Gooding took on the chance to be part of “Single Ladies”, “Barbershop”, and even “Deadwood”, but he didn’t stop taking new steps into different types of acting. Omar also took his chances in voice acting, being one of the credited artists in “Bartman Beyond”, as well as doing some rap songs.
ROGER E. MOSLEY / COACH RICKETS
Mosley’s career was already on its way before he even joined the show, and the same happened once “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” was finished. Even though he made some appearances in “Walker Texas Ranger”, “Rude Awakening”, and “FCU: Fact Checker Unit”, Mosley also did some work in directing.
DOMINIC HOFFMAN / THADDEUS WHITE
Hoffman was no stranger in the industry when he joined the show, and the same continued to be true even after. He has been doing several works in television series, the most famous being “S.W.A.T.”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “The Mentalist”, and “Unsolved”.
Even though the actor has been credited in over 40 projects so far, that didn’t stop him to keep pursuing more in this field. Currently, he is working on “The Free Fall” where he plays Dr. Sims, as well as “Swamp Lion”. We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to see what he will bring us next!
RON CANADA / CHET CORLEY
With over forty years working in television, film, and cinema, Ron Canada is surely one of the big names that ever stepped on “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper”. He is still acting to this day, and his most recent projects are “The Empty Man” and “The Kinjiku” which would be released during this year.
After the show, Canada continued working in television series, but most of his recognition comes from the movies he was part of. Having his name credited in “Wedding Crashers”, “National Treasure”, “Lone Star”, and “The Human Stain”, he is indeed a force to be reckoned with on the cinematographic industry.
DON CHEADLE / BENNIE
A face that is recognized everywhere (maybe because he is everywhere) is the one of Don Cheadle. His acting career kept going and he has made an appearance in some of the best movies from the past years, such as “Crash”, “Hotel Rwanda”, “Ocean’s 11” (and all the others from the franchise), just to name a few.
Don also joined forces with other actors and created a humanitarian organization called Not On Our Watch, which is “committed to robust international advocacy and humanitarian assistance. [...] We develop advocacy campaigns that bring global attention to international crises and give voice to their victims. We target mass media and international press, and engage world leadership.”
While we can all agree that the sitcom is nothing but that, “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” does have its moments that amount to pure laughter, and incredibly talented cast, as well as certain hidden messages that might pass if one is not paying enough attention. Beneath the silliness of the show, and the easy jokes, “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” also shares a strong message: the importance of good friendships and the value of being supported by those who love you.
