Being the First Lady can be pretty amazing and give you the many different perks that come along with the title. FLOTUS HAS TO HOST THE STATE DINNER

Whenever any foreign government official or monarch comes to visit the White House, the First Lady must always host the State Dinner. She has complete liberty over the menu, the flower arrangements, the guest list, the seating, and everything else that goes along with it. This might seem like such a delight but we are quite sure that it can be a bit stressful as well!

THEY ARE FORBIDDEN FROM OPENING THEIR WINDOWS

Former First Lady Michelle Obama admitted once that they are not allowed to open their windows. This might sound like the most ridiculous rule, but then again this is the First Family we are talking about. She even added:

"Sasha opened her window once—there were calls. 'Shut the window!' It never opened again."

THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE

Another rule that seems super ridiculous is the fact that the First Lady (and any member of her family) is not allowed to drive. This is a rule that has been there forever and nobody really knows who implemented it. Well, we guess that the First Family is not really missing anything since they can still ride their cars with their own drivers.

FLOTUS CAN NOT DECLINE THE SECRET SERVICE

Now, this is a rule that is pretty practical and quite sensible as well. We know that a lot of people might want to pull a trick or two against the First Lady so it is only reasonable for her to get her own Secret Service. This is something that is non-negotiable and she cannot decline this.

THEY ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO DECORATE A CERTAIN PART OF THE WHITE HOUSE

Due to the fact that First Ladies’ will come and go, it is only right for them to only decorate a certain part of the White House. This might be for preservation purposes. Plus, the staff might want to reserve some space for the new ones to come!

THEY SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A PRESIDENTIAL PET

Most families normally have their own pets, and this is something that is not really required of them. However, this is a rule that the First Family has to abide by because having pets makes them more approachable. Can you guess which First Family is the only one who does not have a pet?

FLOTUS HAS TO HOST THE ANNUAL EASTER EGG ROLL

The Easter Egg Roll is an annual event that the First Lady has to host. This is an event that mainly caters to children and so the First Lady is responsible for hosting this since she usually has a more maternal instinct. Plus, the First Family is required to take part in this event as well!

THEY CAN NEVER PLAGIARIZE SPEECHES

This is a rule that does not really have to be told because plagiarizing is an offense. However, recent events have made this rule resurface so we guess that the First Lady has to follow this. Plus, how hard is it to write your own speech, especially if you have been granted that role?

THE FIRST FAMILY SHOULD ALWAYS PICK UP THE TAB

If you are the First Family, then there are certain expectations from your family. One of them is having to always pick up the tab when dining with other people. As a matter of fact, Former First Lady Laura Bush seems to recall that they did this way too often when her husband was in office.

THEY CAN NOT ACCEPT ANY GIFTS GIVEN TO THEM

If you feel like being the First Lady is great due to the fact that a lot of people might want to give you gifts...then think again! It is granted that the First Lady and the First Family receive a lot of presents but they really are not allowed to keep any of them. Instead, said gifts go straight to The National Archives and Records Administration...

FLOTUS HAS TO FOLLOW THE ‘DESIGNER RULE’

As a First Lady, you are required to be presentable at all times. This is why most of them are expected to buy from different designers since fashion is a staple for them. Although this can be quite overbearing at times and even Former First Lady Laura Bush said, "I was amazed by the sheer number of designer clothes that I was expected to buy.”

THEY HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR PERSONAL EXPENSES

Whenever we think of the First Lady or of the First Family, we always assume how lucky they are to be living most of their lives for free. However, this is not really the case since the First Family does have to pay for their own personal expenses. Well, we guess that they are somehow just like the rest of us...

THE FIRST FAMILY HAS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL SNOWBALL FIGHT

Can you imagine participating in a snowball fight inside the grounds of the White House? Apparently, this is an annual event that the First Family has to participate in. We are not going to lie, this sounds super fun and how do we get an invite?

THE FIRST FAMILY PAYS FOR THEIR OWN MEALS IN THE WHITE HOUSE

As we have previously discovered, the First Family does pay for their own personal expenses. This also means that they do their groceries much like the rest of us! If any of the children want a bowl of cereal, then at least we know that their parents bought it themselves!

THEY SHOULD ALWAYS MEET WITH THE QUEEN

As the First Lady always accompanies her husband in both of their state duties, one of its perks is meeting Queen Elizabeth II. The longest-reigning monarch has always met the First Family even before she was the queen! How amazing is that?

THE OUTGOING FLOTUS HAS TO MEET THE INCOMING FLOTUS

It is only right for the incoming First Lady to be welcomed by the outgoing First Lady since they are basically going to be handing over the keys to the White House. This is an age-old tradition and every single First Lady did it. Now, who is looking forward to having the new First Lady meet the old First Lady next year?

THEY CANNOT HAVE ANY OFFICIAL SOCIAL MEDIA

This is another rule that is pretty practical since there is a lot of internet privacy concerns. If you are a member of the First Family, then you really are not allowed to have any social media accounts whilst you are in the White House. One of the perfect examples is Malia and Sasha Obama who never had any problems with this rule!

EXPENSIVE GIFTS GIVEN TO THEM MUST GO INTO ARCHIVE

As we have previously discovered, most gifts that are given to the First Family can not be kept...unless they are willing to buy it from the state. Some of the gifts that were sent to the National Archive are Adidas merchandise from Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and a jersey signed by Lionel Messi from Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri. Bummer!

THEY DO NOT HAVE TO PAY THEIR MORTGAGE

Since the First Family really spends for themselves, then they would need some compensation...right? Well, we feel like having to live in a home rent and mortgage-free is a pretty good deal too! We do wonder how much mortgage the White House accumulates though...

FLOTUS HAS TO CHOOSE A CAUSE TO SUPPORT

The job of the First Lady does not solely revolve around raising her family, supporting her husband, and hosting dinners. Every single First Lady has to choose a cause that they fully believe in to support. This rule was actually started back in the 1800s by Former First Lady Dolley Madison who supported a lot of charities that helped orphans.

THE FIRST FAMILY DOES NOT GET A KEY TO THE WHITE HOUSE

This rule might sound a bit ridiculous since the First Family lives in the White House, right? There was one time when two presidents actually got locked out of the White House by accident. Maybe this was an initiative from them to finally get some keys to their own house...

FLOTUS HAS TO PRESERVE HISTORY

First and foremost, the White House is every inch a museum as it is a house since it does contain a lot of historical artifacts and artworks. It was actually Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy who started the program to preserve the history of the White House. This is a cause that is shared by the First Ladies who succeeded her.

FLOTUS HAS TO LIVE IN THE WHITE HOUSE WITH POTUS AND THEIR CHILDREN

Now, this is a rule that is understood already once you become the First Lady. Since there are so many things to be done in Washington DC, then the First Family should be in the White House at all times. Well, it is not really a bad place to live in, dare we say...

FLOTUS HAS TO CHOOSE THE THEME FOR THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE

Choosing the theme for the annual Christmas tree is a tradition that every First Lady looks forward to. This is another ‘rule’ that was started by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Well, this is a fun tradition so we are not surprised that her successors have loved doing it too!
